The first ever 4 engined aircraft (acording to wikipedia) was the Sikorsky Russky Vityaz, flown in 1913. The first jet aircraft was (acording to my knowledge) was the North American B-45, flown in 1947, a whole 6 years before Comet.
The de-have land commit was not the first four engine commercial plane, it was the first jet airliner witch happened to have four engines.
