Thank you so much for sharing this great build. I built 2 of these on my chicken wagon. They work beautifully, and you're correct about the angles, 14 is too steep. I ended up at 10 degrees and it worked excellent. I'm looking to raise Bresse chickens this year as well. Thanks for putting out great vids!
Great video. Funny thing - I just finished my own roll-away-nestingboxes yesterday. Also a trial. As you I found that 10 rather than 15 degrees felt appropriate. I am really looking forward to see how your birds find your boxes - as mine have not yet laid a SINGLE egg in my design! I don´t know if it is due to the astroturf poultry tm mat or what. Today I added a fake egg to help them understand what the boxes are for ...
This is just a fantastic video. So interesting to hear your thoughts as you adapt this design to meet your own needs. I also like how you evaluate your adaptations later to help other people.
I was looking at the Best Nest Box last night, and decided that's the way I was going to go. However, seeing you build one similar, it's making me think that it can be built! But yes, the Best Nest Box has a larger compartment for the eggs to roll into, so I bet if you make that adjustment it will be a total win.
Hey hey. I realy enyoj all your videos. Please make part 2 as soon as possible :). You wont belive that i just build something like that 2 days ago. Yes on 1st januar. I have 20 chickens and 20 more are coming so i made one of these roll away nesting boxes. But i was doing it all by my feeling. I think that my angle is not good...still testing it out, today is second day...but i dont know. We will see. I really looking forward to see the finnish product, because i realy want to copy it. Sorry for my bad english. Have a nice day. Greatings from Sloveina by a young farmer Martin :)
You did a fine job building that nesting box, it did look a little bit to steep, but your modification should take care of the possible egg issue. Take care and God Bless you always my friend.
Hi Simeon, thanks for another wonderful video. Can you please make a video on your woodshop and some of the specific tools you use to bring these ideas to life? The table system for your table saw looks pretty awesome!
If the foam is too large, you could also try the liner for cabinets that is foamy but is thin. I think that would allow enough cushion that the eggs wouldn't break and also allow you to make a slope at the end of the roll away nest. Best of luck! Looks great.
My thought was to cut a slot on either end for your angle board to fasten it with a screw and flat washer. If later you find that it is too steep and eggs are breaking you can loosen those screws and adjust it down a little until you are happy with it.
What kind of table saw is that, I didn't see it in the description as a tool. I've never seen one like that but man that would be handy over what I have!
Very nice. Build myself one yesterday also inspired by richard. I also used an 12 degree angle because i found that on another design. I will use it in the eggmobile, our land is flat as a pancake here in holland! I just put it with the chickens, very curious about how it will work.
interesting project Simeon .. i am interested to see how it works out for you ... it could be something I could adopt in my modest family sized chicken operation :)
Hej! It will be really interesting to see how this works out, Will you be putting some sort of cushioning material on the vertical piece at the bottom where the eggs will come to rest ?
12% incline, they say. 12-18%. But they found while both work, the hens enjoyed 12% more than the steeper incline. Was a study, sorry don’t have the link.
Will pressure washing the OSB board not cause it to delaminate. In Canada we generally only use OSB where it is protected from the moisture such as weather, even when used as house paneling its covered by the exterior siding installed over top.
Have you seen Off Grid Sweden? He is a really nice guy too, I find his videos are a little too short but he is getting much better at it lately. ruclips.net/channel/UCvm-363YSum7EclRn6kJRKw It is cool that Sweden has so many homesteaders.
I also made roll out nesting box with wooden but I found many egg as broken..... So pliz give me some suggestions about this.... If you are helping me... I'm so to be grateful to you
in simplicity, at 14 degree incline angle would make the high side be at 6 inches higher on 2 feet (24 inches) run? a 3 inches rise over 24 inches run would get the incline angle to be 7 degrees? from trigonometry, the incline angle (0) is determined by the tangent of rise (y) over run (x), which = tan (0) = y/x ==> 0 = inverse tangent (y/x)? in complicity, if you want to determine the precise calculations then see Physics, which needs to consider the friction force between the egg and the incline surface, the mass of the egg, its moment of inertia, its radius, etc Overall, very good design :)
hi. if i were you, i’d put only 2 screws on the sides and make a check of how it works (if the angle is reasonable) and if it needed adjustment it was very simple: just push it slightly up, test it again and then fix it for good.
I was always told never use the fence and miter at the same time except if you put block on the fence ( not in line with the blade) for receptive cuts. You do this all the time what wore you taught and why?
There's a video on the net in which someone used paint trays to roll the eggs away from his hens (covering the lower end with a little flap). I like that angle, and it seems to work for him.
Hello Swedish Homestead ! I just wanted to ask about the "Barnevelder" chicken. Are you sure its from Germany? Because i am pretty sure is a Dutch breed. It's name comes from a Dutch town called "Barneveld". Greetings from a Dutchman living in Germany.
I did much the same when I had birds. The reason I had, was they were consuming the eggs. Rather counterproductive. I do wish I had a vid of the chicken foot reaching for the out of reach egg. Rather humorous that..
Table Saw Law:...Never use the rip fence and the T square at the same time !. Your " keeper piece" becomes trapped and is highly susceptible to becoming a wooden projectile aimed at your face . Cross cutting an end of an 8' sheet puts you 6' from the rip fence... ensuring that your out of position to properly push the work through the saw.
now we know who has been stealing our Kangaroo road signs. You and 50,000 other tourist will be disappointed as they are now bolted on with blind bolts, hope the nest boxes work
Is this for people who like watching people build random crap or for actual farm help? Cause other than a neat idea this video was no help. You need to give dimensions or somthing..... anything so we can try to replicate it without just throwing wood at a saw and hoping it works.

Very interesting! I love seeing you use you skills and craftsmanship!

Thank you. I’m building a layer box right now and I’m going to add a drawer AND a way to lock them out at night. Great ideas.

Looking forward to seeing how well it works!
If you put a strip of foam in the front of the 'drawer' it will catch the eggs very nicely, or use the astroturf in front.
So glad that your back at it with the videos! Love this nestbox concept! Thanks so much for sharing!~TM
You did a fine job building that nesting box, it did look a little bit to steep, but your modification should take care of the possible egg issue. Take care and God Bless you always my friend.
Great work as always. Thanks for sharing. This winter is bad, especially after the summer we got.
Hi Simeon, thanks for another wonderful video. Can you please make a video on your woodshop and some of the specific tools you use to bring these ideas to life? The table system for your table saw looks pretty awesome!
I'm in love with your table saw
I agree! Works very smooth and slick.
If the foam is too large, you could also try the liner for cabinets that is foamy but is thin. I think that would allow enough cushion that the eggs wouldn't break and also allow you to make a slope at the end of the roll away nest. Best of luck! Looks great.

thats one practical saw!
Looking forward to your results. I need to upgrade my nest boxes.
Great work am proud
What kind of table saw is that, I didn't see it in the description as a tool. I've never seen one like that but man that would be handy over what I have!
i didn't know anyone used a stick ruler anymore (folding ruler) great video
That headgear is a trip🤣
Great content as well as the music. Very enjoyable video!
I have seen recommendations on 11 degrees for the angle as the preferred angle to prevent breaking... I agree with you that 14 seems quite steep
So nice to have a Dad nearby when you need him.........
Very nice. Build myself one yesterday also inspired by richard. I also used an 12 degree angle because i found that on another design. I will use it in the eggmobile, our land is flat as a pancake here in holland! I just put it with the chickens, very curious about how it will work.

Happy New Year From Wales!
Hej! It will be really interesting to see how this works out, Will you be putting some sort of cushioning material on the vertical piece at the bottom where the eggs will come to rest ?
Great video, thanks for explaining this nice clean egg collector.
if you hang it in a chicken mobile, it will hang level. (in 1 direction is enough)
I like the innovative modifications. So are you selling eggs again .or just want cleaner eggs for family consumption?
love it ..please let me know for a finish part
Is the plywood treated or untreated or do you paint or seal the raw wood in any way?
Can you tell what that is that allows one person to cut a full sheet on a table saw?
Im interested to see how this will turn out.. and how many chickens it can accomodate... interesting.
Well, that's interesting, and somewhat different.... I'm hanging in to see how the cows end up nesting for the winter this time :)
12% incline, they say. 12-18%. But they found while both work, the hens enjoyed 12% more than the steeper incline. Was a study, sorry don’t have the link.
Can I please get the Measurements thank you so much
Great Mickey mouse look 😅 cheers Schnuz.
why did you decide to forego the hoophouse and deep bedding for the hens?
Will pressure washing the OSB board not cause it to delaminate. In Canada we generally only use OSB where it is protected from the moisture such as weather, even when used as house paneling its covered by the exterior siding installed over top.
They will be able to remove the mats for washing, the OSB will be in no danger from the washing
No dimensions? Would like more details please? Thank you for sharing
14 deg or 14%(==8deg) ?
Thanks for this, I was looking the better nest box, but didn't like that it's all metal....kind of contrasts with just small scale personal coops.
What type is wood is that board made of ?
This looks amazing ! Im subscribin Richard and you...two best youtubers in only one country :D ! How many chickens do you have ?
Have you seen Off Grid Sweden? He is a really nice guy too, I find his videos are a little too short but he is getting much better at it lately. ruclips.net/channel/UCvm-363YSum7EclRn6kJRKw

Candide Thirtythree Thank you!
thank you for sharing.....
Do hens still go broody?
this will be interesting
I also made roll out nesting box with wooden but I found many egg as broken..... So pliz give me some suggestions about this.... If you are helping me... I'm so to be grateful to you
Thank You..
Why not just get an egg or two and try the slope out?
in simplicity, at 14 degree incline angle would make the high side be at 6 inches higher on 2 feet (24 inches) run?
a 3 inches rise over 24 inches run would get the incline angle to be 7 degrees?
from trigonometry, the incline angle (0) is determined by the tangent of rise (y) over run (x), which = tan (0) = y/x ==> 0 = inverse tangent (y/x)?
in complicity, if you want to determine the precise calculations then see Physics, which needs to consider the friction force between the egg and the incline surface, the mass of the egg, its moment of inertia, its radius, etc
Overall, very good design :)
Are you going to paint them? OSB is not known for its resistance to water.
Nothing opened with Amazon links

I need a table saw, im doing a box with saw horses and skill saw.
hi can you pls share what are the dimension of your rolled out nesting box. thank in advance.😊

Soon on Wranglerstar:
"How To Build Roll Away Nesting Boxes"
Stygian Doll hahaha
10 degrees is the best
There's a video on the net in which someone used paint trays to roll the eggs away from his hens (covering the lower end with a little flap). I like that angle, and it seems to work for him.
I think 5 deg. is what I've read.

Hi! simeon is talking about the "bielefelder" chicken breed. they are named after a city in germany "bielefeld".
Ohh wow thanks! i tried to look it up but i could not find it.
Thanks did not know that breed.
Greets
here they are:

liebe grüsse!
Danke Dir.
Gute Abend !
I haven't seen anyone use a wooden folding ruler since my granddad
Yeah, I would probably do the slope less than that. You don't need much slope to get an egg rolling...
👍👍👍
Make roll away boxes. Don’t roll away Sally.
Hey, butt jointing OSB at the edge isn't very solid from a woodworking pov, otherwise great video!
true, but in this case it will be plenty strong
If your artificial grass does not work try wood pulp I guess is the best word, eggs will stay clean. : )Peace
I did much the same when I had birds. The reason I had, was they were consuming the eggs. Rather counterproductive. I do wish I had a vid of the chicken foot reaching for the out of reach egg. Rather humorous that..
I did it with Woodprix.

Cross cutting an end of an 8' sheet puts you 6' from the rip fence... ensuring that your out of position to properly push the work through the saw.
Instead of the lame music, how about talking us through the process? "I'm cutting this size for this location because this occurs... etc..."
now we know who has been stealing our Kangaroo road signs. You and 50,000 other tourist will be disappointed as they are now bolted on with blind bolts, hope the nest boxes work
LOL so don't comment on youtube or contact you on youtube but yet you are on youtube.
Is this for people who like watching people build random crap or for actual farm help? Cause other than a neat idea this video was no help. You need to give dimensions or somthing..... anything so we can try to replicate it without just throwing wood at a saw and hoping it works.
Be nice if you describe what the hell you was doing such as measurments and assembly instructions. Total waste of time.
