Its the knowledge that we as women are all too aware of men’s physical capabilities to overpower us and that A man, let alone a GROUP of men, could easily take advantage of that and hurt us. So regardless of WHO the person is whether they are a friend, family member, stranger, teacher, or pastor the possibility of being in danger is always there. Now to which degree that we feel unsafe or in danger can vary from person to person based on childhood trauma, negative experiences growing up in adolescence and harsh realities that we have had to face in adulthood. Another thing to note is that the level of fear can also increase given a common choice that is often made in group settings which is either 1.) actively joining in or 2.) taking a step back and just witnessing the event taking place (aka the bystander effect) Which neither of these choices is the right one, being actually stepping in and stopping the group or even one singular individual from taking advantage of or hurting someone. So to sum it up I think most women can probably agree to some extent that when we are hanging out with our guy friends we may feel safe, but there can be moments when we suddenly remember that the chance that we will be hurt or taken advantage of by any number of our guy friends is low, but NEVER zero.

I am very cold/distant and just aware of my surroundings with men at my job though. I think it’s okay to try and be understanding with yourself and if you can speak to someone at work, because I did that with my new job so they could understand me a little bit more as to why I avoid men.

You can see a friend and feel safe and at the end sadly it can still happen in situations of what you weren’t scared of.
