      Lester I think it will take time for Storm and Prim get used to each other. You and Jami will have to try and make sure they all get attention. It's just like when you have kids, by the time Lex came LE was probably already used to sharing the love from a parent

    This is normal behavior, it’s okay for Storm to establish quiet dominance over Prim. They’ll work it out and it will be fine. It’s less jealousy and more dominance and the horses know what’s going on. It’s common, they’re not fighting, just establishing pecking orders. Don’t worry about this.

    Well, what I did was put a lead around my neck every time I was in the pasture. Feeding grooming, working, whatever. After a couple of times, it never bothered my horses anymore. My mare used to run to the opposite side of pasture . Then she was missing out. She wanted attention more than her concern over a lead.

I make sure the clip is near my right (dominant) hand so I can sneak it onto place. Hide the halter under clothing if you can but a lead around their neck will work to walk them to where the barn/halter is.

    An elderly Veterinarian that had dozens and dozens of animals, I worked with, told me to remember, SENIORITY, love them, pet them, praise them, feed them, groom them........by seniority, or in smaller groups, the seniority of the ones nearest to you at the time.
    Not age, not who is the prettiest, not ever by who is the newest, but who got their first.
    It'll help you avoid issues.
    They can't blame each other over seniority, be jealous, it's not gender, or the baby, or the newest arrival, it's the horse, or dog, or cat, who was first......it's just how it is. Most of the time the older guys don't even care anymore, but the newer ones take notice and fall in line. To pay more attention to the newest causes issues .... I was in Rescue, and he was right.

    Horses put their ears back for a variety of reasons, including:
    Listening: Horses may put their ears back to listen to sounds behind them.
    Submissiveness: Horses may put their ears back when they are submissive.
    Fear: Horses may put their ears back when they are frightened.
    Territorial protection: Horses may put their ears flat and pinned back when they are protecting their territory.
    Alertness: Horses may put their ears back when they are alert or focusing on something in front of them.
    Learning: Horses may put their ears back when they are learning something new.
    Working hard: Horses may put their ears back when they are working hard or putting in a lot of effort.

    Hey Lester, I was an adult before I got my first horse in the early 2000's. I purchased the worst possible horse for a first-time horse owner with below novice skill level. She was a young filly much like Rita. I wanted to learn so badly how to build a relationship with her. I spent hours watching shows on RFD. I discovered parelli horsemanship training and I love the way they laid out their training. Since then, I've discovered Henson at the painted Desert ranch on RUclips. I know you're busy but if you are really interested in learning you might want to check them out.

    I didn't see anyone else bring this up so I will. This is in addition to what most of the horse people said. Horses will sometimes walk or run away more as a game than fear or anything else. They should be trained that the halter means something good. So sometimes horses learn that they have the power or hierarchy over humans in the pasture when they don't do what is wanted of them. They can try to put you into your spot in the herd and want that to be below them in the lineup. Horses position in the herd can even be effected by the order in which the mares are bred or get pregnant. It can be serious business if you are moving horses around at times of breeding or giving birth because a mean lead mare may attempt to cause miscarriage or hurt a foal that is born before her own is born, because it effects the order in the herd. Usually those issues are less with related mares or ones that have a long time herd established so they know who is boss and so on down the line. because you have horses from different past owners their training is probably different and their habits are different it takes some time to learn their quirks and to let them how how they will fit into the herd.
    It is important to Storm to show Prim that she has a place in the herd if for nothing else than her own peace of mind. If she were attacking that is different but a look or ear signals is perfectly to be expected. BTW often horses consider donkeys lower than they are and can be ornery with them at times.

    Plus, you never know when you may need it anyway.

  • @ritahubschen6426
    @ritahubschen6426 2 дня назад +1

    That made me laugh, this is quite normal when there's a newcomer. Jealousy is a real thing with horses and they're still trying to establish who is the higher horse. Just give it some time. My horses would just run to me or to the barn. I didn't have to go chase them. I'm just saying what I see Jamie cuddles them a little too much and they don't need a bath every day, it strips all the oil out of there coat. Maybe if it's 100° every day. For them a horse bath is when they roll in the dirt, I know we don't get it but that's what they do. Hopefully the jealousy will go away after a while once they have sorted out there hierarchy. You're all doing the best you can. They can be trained to wait for their affection but then again you need to hire a trainer that's all it is, training with horses. Be careful with the jealousy that's how people get hurt, you see how she took a bite out on the donkey. next time that could be you, so be careful you all. I would take them out individually if you want to love on them 🐴 just my opinion but everyone feeds way too many snacks, because then it comes to the point where they expect it and it's not a treat anymore. Back in the day we didn't have all these artificial treats we gave real apples carrots once in awhile a sugar cube. You're all doing the best you can. And it always can't be just love you have to put a little discipline also. Just raise your voice and say no, the way you raised your kids. Horses are big kids 😅

    @RebeccaCharette-h2d 2 дня назад +2

    So, my horse, Arrow, can be a little tricky with catching. The thing you do is get in front of the driveline. Get in front of her and make sure you aren’t looking directly into her face - that’s pressure. Look down at her feet, keeping an eye on what direction she is thinking of moving. The moment she starts to move away from you, cut her off. The moment she looks at you, look down and turn away from her. Wait a moment and then walk towards her. If she starts to move away from you, cut her off. It’s hard to explain. But you want to be conscious of your speed, don’t walk towards her in a hurry, don’t try catching her right away as well. Walk casually, don’t make catching her the main thing. Taking your time helps a big deal. Don’t make catching her the main event, be casual about it. They can feel your energy when you are only focused on catching them. I take my halter everywhere with my horses, I mix it up, sometimes I just give them a good rub down with the halter and then walk away, sometimes I’ll catch them. Keep them guessing. It works but I don’t think I’m doing a very good job at explaining it. 🤦🏻‍♀️
    Look up John Lyons, the hard to catch horse - it explains it much better than I could - also Rick Gore has great videos explaining the driveline and pressure and release when catching horses.
    I’ve come a long way with learning how to catch hard to catch horses, Arrow is the hardest one, but my senior horse, Barney can be a little tough as well. But I’ve gotten pretty good at it. The boys (all three of my horses) all know I’m not playing now. If they are going to make catching hard, I make them work until they yield and realize that running away is more work than getting caught. My young horse, Fin has started trying to give me the run around when it comes to catching, but that’s my fault because I’ve been brushing him in the field and he’s figured out that if he walks away, the pressure stops. So I’ve been working with him more on catching in the field and I’ve stoped brushing him while he’s eating his snacks and started catching him and tying him more to get that idea out of his head, silly, smart boy of mine.
    As for herd dynamic stuff, Prim is new, so it has messed up the pecking order a bit. There is going to be scuffles and horses moving each other’s feet for a while until the pecking order is figured out again. I have three new horses in with my boys, and if I allowed it, it could be chaos in the barn area where I feed. I feed my boys separately from the new girls for now and let them figure out the pecking order when they are in the big field behind the barn. Last time we had a new horse in with my boys it took almost a year for things to settle down. But it was between two young geldings and my old man Barney, and my wildie, Arrow. The two young geldings were constantly trying to move up in the herd and it got even more interesting when Arrow ( my herd leader) started letting Finley ( my four year old) move his feet. Fin got a giant head and thought he ruled everything until we got a new mare who knocked him back down to size 😂
    What’s going on with your horses and donkeys is normal. It’s all herd dynamics. I’m fascinated with herd dynamics and learning who is trying to move up in the pecking order and who is lowest. My poor old man, Barney is definitely at the bottom, and Fin, my colt, is trying to take Arrow’s place as herd leader - but Arrow is good at kicking Finny’s bum when he needs it. Gosh I love my horses ❤️
    Thanks for being you, Lester. For loving your animals like you do. You and your family are definitely my favourite people. ❤️

    What you do is you follow her around with the rope for no other reason to just rub the rope or halter on her and then walk away, you want her to realize that just cause you have a halter in your hand doesn't mean your going to catch her every time, your desensitizing her to you walking in the pasture with the halter in your hand, and do this every day that you go to spend time with her no matter if your going to catch her or not ❤

    Maybe for awhile until they adjust to the new pasture dynamic with Rita gone and a new horse it might be best not to pet them back and forth like that while they are bunched up close like that. Give them some time but definitely address Storm biting Ivy. Those babies belong to you guys and I know you give them their best lives and we all love how much you love these babies.

    I used to hide the halter and lead in my back pocket and have treats in another pocket, after a bit I would put it around my neck, they learned pretty quick they were missing out on treats and lovins if they walked away. Mares in a group are a bunch of teenage mean girls that are always fighting to be the Queen Bee. You have to give it time, it should settle out after awhile. Giving Storm love after she went after Ivy is reinforcing that bad behavior.

      That's what I was thinking. In the last week, she's been on leads and lead away from what she thought was her new home. She's decided she is not leaving this home! You will have to catch her first. Lester, either shove the lead rope in your back pocket or around your neck. Almost make it so it looks like it's part of your outfit, every time. And just leave it there and do your chores. They will stop noticing it over time. And you will always have a rope ready in case you need it. You never know when something might happen and you need it. Just helps to get used to doing that. Storm is just being a mare and letting Prim know, your hers! Unfortunately, Ivy got the jealous bite. She will learn to stay away from Storm when your around. I love how quite Dinky has become since Rita moved. I'm sure your neighbors are too!😊

    I totally get the high archy, pecking order. And that right now it's basically between the mares. So Lester, why didn't ya'll just go on over to Buccee's? In the background, of your video, Buccee's is clearly in hopes of ya'll acknowledging him as well as you did with the others. But you didn't. 💔
    Therefore leaving Buccee's without reinforcement through love, conversation & validation. 😢
    I'm sorry, but I just couldn't help but notice this. Buccee's hope right then and there was, disappointment in plain sight. He's not only blind but sometimes not seen by some. 💔
    I know you're not a horse person. But you're a kind & loving man to creature's, bigs & littles. You have an open mind & willingness to new things.And have been progressing well, while stepping out of your comfort zone with horses 🐎 🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎🐎
    Lester, I love ya'll ❤️

    I enjoyed this horsey video. You’ve got a good start with her because she’s not walking away from you if you don’t have the halter and lead, she should after you make a connection with her be fine with the halter however, there’s some things that you will want to do. When you go out into the pasture, have your lead rope draped over your shoulder. Walk up to her like you normally would and rub all over her. Don’t touch the lead rope until you feel you have a good connection with her. Oh good grief this is too complicated to explain in writing. Call me 😊

    This is normal horse behavior, and unfortunately, this is what Rita was blamed for doing and was separated from the pack, but as you can see, this is going to happen with your horses. Please let Rita come back to the pack. She deserves it.

    • @Bren-sf6ep
      @Bren-sf6ep 2 дня назад +5

      Yes, exactly, and Rita always gets the raft blamed and now put away from the other horse it's wrong, and we know it's because they are both scared of her , it's sad Rita and Darell should be with the others. And when there's lots of mares, they fight until they know who's boss . Prim may not like men handling her because Jami doesn't have that problem. And bottom line, they have to stop showing FEAR. Animals aren't stupid.

      I’m sure they moved Rita for a reason and that was to allow Prim to ease into the herd more easily. Rita IS the high energy horse who wants all the attention. I suspect they were worried the 2 mares would gang up on Prim. I would bet money that when the herd is seems stable they will move Rita & Dinky over to the main horse pasture.

    🤠🤠🤠🐴🐎🐴🐎🐴🐎You have the right idea, watching their behavior, Those horses read your intent by observing your approach. My horses all come up to me, every time, but, we've done this a lot. Prim is not "officially" accepted herd mate, yet. These things take time to resolve among the hierarchy. Storm sees you as herd boss and is refusing entry to Prim. (into your bubble).

    When i was a kid we would have a cube of sugar to get my horse to come when called. His teeth must have been really bad. I would also hide the halter. There are more appropriate treats these days but i wouldnt over use treats but it can start changing Prims idea that you are going to work her.

  • @tamib711
    @tamib711 2 дня назад

    It's all about hierarchy. Storm has just established herself as lead mare (over donkeys and all), biting the donkey was just her saying stay out of my space and away from my human. She is also showing YOU that you are below her subtly. Testing you. If you do not show dominance, it WILL intensify. They were not looking at each other out of jealousy. They were ensuring the other wasn't coming to run them off. They are establishing placement and i would not be surprised if, once Prim is settled in, she doesn't own top spot. She has the qualities of a lead mare imo. Storm knows it but instinct makes her try or want to hold that spot. They were just keeping am eye on each other as to whether they needed to be ready to spar or relax and enjoy. Let it play out. Don't interrupt it because it nature and when you put human rationale and logic behind herd dynamics, you create the problems. You don't do it with the cattle. Just because horses are loving and show intelligence doesn't mean it doesn't work the same.
