- This is a follow up video to my unboxing/initial review video of the brand new Canon Vixia HF R500. In this video, I will show you some macro shots, some max zoom shots, and some outdoor audio all on the highest HD settings but without any complicated settings. This camera is perfect for the amateur like myself.
This helped a lot in deciding to buy this camcorder. Really great video quality, I'm going for it.
haha
Thanks for watching and I am glad I was able to help in the decision. I use the heck out of mine and still love it.
I bought mine yesterday, absolutely love it so far!
Me too man it's awesome! and $200 great price!!!
hey quick question cuz i just got this camera, i cant film in 60fps and 35mbs , is this becasue i only have a 35GB SD? do i need he 64GB to record full HD 60fps???
Literally helped me decide to buy it. Going tomorrow. Done deal.
Thanks! And 60fps is excellent!
Awesome. Then the video was worth it! Thanks for watching
LOL! The dog looked spooked!
+lemurian chick Yeah he doesn't like electronic devices or tools of any kind!
Picture is really nice, your video really helped me out! Thanks!
You are most welcome! Be sure to thumbs up the video and subscribe to help support my channel. Thanks for watching.
Wow the zoom in is just jaw dropping :) Definitely using for youtube videos and baby on the way :)
Thank you so much! I'm definitely buying :)
I agree it is pretty good on closeups. Really good for the price!
Who you telling? :)
I bought mine a couple of weeks ago, so far its a great camera :)
I still love it.
Thanks for the video, very informative. Helped me make a decision on what to get.
Thinking about buying this via Amazon. Thanks for the advice and demo.
You are welcome. You won't be disappointed.
did u buy it?...can i buy it tooo??...give me a greeen signal...r u happy?
I'm going to buy the camera this weekend and I'm so excited to start filming
+mycus guidry Nice! Just make sure you have good lighting and you will be set. I recommend a cheap kit like I just bought in this video: ruclips.net/video/9bAcAaLzYNU/видео.html
The dog "probably has no idea what's going on here". LOL I'm guessing that's right on.
Is the dog @4:00 alive?!?!?! btw you've got me sold on this camera
Haha, yep he is alive. He just likes to lay like that in the sun. I am glad the video helped you make a decision. Good luck with it! Please like this video and subscribe to help support my channel.
you saved me a ton of research . Bought the HF R600 ...thanks.
david moody Cool, good luck with it! What made up your mind for you?
External mic & headphone jacks...and the price.
Sharp images. The greens are so luscious. I noticed some pixelation. Prob due to the RUclips compression though eh? Thanks for the video.
Yeah, it looks slightly better in the raw format.
LDSreliance Forgot to ask if u don't mind....How do you find the battery life ?
I don't have anything to compare it to. It has a timer on the display that estimates the amount of time left and on a full charge it is about 100 minutes. It doesn't lose much, if any, charge when it is shut off for long periods of time, though. If you are taking this thing to Disney World or something you might want a spare battery in your pack.
Also, about the SD card, you mentioned a class 6 or 10 SD card? What class do you recommend and what is the largest SD I can use in this camcorder? Thank you so much for your video and help!
Really nice camera, I plan to buy one myself to make HD videos.
Yeah, I agree. Good luck with it!
Ok :D
En la salida plug con el cable adaptado a RCA como activo el modo para reproducir en mi tv ,o no funciona con tv no hd? O EL MINI hD ? Hay una funcion o comando desde la cámara?
Everything's good about this camera, and I've liked it since I got it for Christmas. Only thing I see wrong with it is the Zoom, because, when it zooms close, it doesn't focus at all. (Unless I zoom in very slowly)
Yep, same as I have experienced. That is pretty common for lower end camcorders, though. They are trying to figure out what you are looking at or focusing on and then if you zoom in real fast the processor can't keep up with trying to figure out what you want to look at. I don't notice it any more because I have trained myself not to zoom in fast.
Can you tell me what format you shot this in? Also what format did you render this in? The quality looks great and I just picked this camera up but I am unsure about what format to render in for the best quality.
This video is shot in MP4 format at 35 Mbps. That is the highest setting for computer graphics. It also has a different setting designed for viewing on high def televisions called AVCHD.
Did you render it into mp4 format with windows movie maker after you edited this clip?
Yep, I saved it with the "RUclips" settings in MovieMaker and it kept it as MP4. After uploading to RUclips, though, it is changed to FLV format.
Oh okay thanks. Whenever I render my video to mp4 it won't process on you tube :(
Hmmm, RUclips accepts MP4 format. Not sure why you are having that problem. Is it an error message on RUclips? Is the file too large?
i need a camera for filming skate videos so obviously there will be a lot of movement in them, would this camcorder be good.? Why or Why not?
IMO 720p 60 fps looks fantastic! My camera is coming, thinking about getting a wide angle lens what do you think?
You can't change the lens on this camcorder. Sorry
LDSreliance Cannon sells a wide angle lens attachment for the HF 500 it screws on to the lens piece
www.amazon.com/Canon-WD-H43-Angle-Converter-Camcorders/dp/B000NJD13G/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1427846319&sr=8-2&keywords=cannon+wide+angle+vixia
The comments said that it doesn't work: "I have the R500 and it doesn't have any threads for filters so no way to mount this." There are no threads on the lens opening so there is no way to mount this.
Nice, I don't know if you have already got videos after you have mastered all the settings, would be good to see. How does the Image stabilization compare to your other camera? Is a camcorder better at filming movement than a Bridge camera?
I'm not familiar with a bridge camera. I do know that the motion stabilization on this camera is far better than what was on the market 5-6 years ago even in more expensive cameras. Now it doesn't work perfect when you are zoomed in far but for most shots it works great.
I don't know that I will ever master all the settings but I have gotten the hang of most of it. You can view any of my videos from the past 6 months and they are all using the new Canon camcorder. Feel free to take a look at a few of them (some are outdoors, some are using a tripod, some are zoomed in, some are indoors, etc.) and see what you think.
Will do thanks, here in the UK it is called a Canon Legria HF R506 don't know why they call it something different, i'm sure its the same camera
What I really also like about this R500 is that it has zoom speed control i.e. 1 ... 2.... or 3......So when you zoom in and out there is a good stability in the video which I find it extremely helpful at least for me.
I agree. It can zoom in or out fast or slow depending on how hard you press the zoom button. I think a lot of cameras do that but it definitely helps make amateurs like me look better.
This helped! Just bought an r50 from Canon refurbished. Canon seems to make quality stuff, for a fair market price. Are you still using yours, still enjoying it?
+Danzchannel Yep, still use it for most of my videos on here. Does well except for in poor lighting so I picked up a lighting kit for $50.
This camcorder is amazing thanks for this video
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
This looks like the perfect device for videoing songs I'm writing since it also has the mic input as well as headphone out. Nice crisp images.
Have you ever tried to use this with Sony Vegas video software?
No, I have not yet invested in any video editing software besides Windows Movie Maker. And yes it does make nice, crisp, HD images if there is good lighting. The lighting is the key with this camera.
Could you do a video with different light scenarios? I want to see how it performs in medium, low and almost dark light. I am looking for medium light case (in the room of an apartment with just a bulb).
Also, try to use the 4MPBS, 17MBPS, 24MBPS and 35MBPS variations of video quality.
My friend has one and I too am thinking of taking it but, I am bit disappointed with its video quality inside a room. Please do not mind!
I will see what I can do. I am a little bit busy right now but I will add it to the list of future videos!
LDSreliance Thanks a lot. I will be waiting for it. Thanks again.
I know it has been a month since you requested it but I finally got a video of different lighting and different video quality settings. Here you go: Canon Vixia HF R500 - Results With Different Lighting and Settings
LDSreliance Just watched it. Thanks.
Here is another video that I shot showing low light performance indoors. Several other people had requested it. Low Light Canon Vixia HF R500
hi, can you go on manual, set for 24p, and lock in a shutter speed at 1/48th (1/50th on DSLRs for instance) and be able to adjust the aperture to change exposure? I read that the lens only has a few f-stops of change (which sucks like all consumer cameras for last 20 years) and I don't think the lens has threads to install filters in front of the lens (like neutral density filters to make up for the lack of f-stops on the lens). The colors on Canon has always been good, the dynamic range as barely acceptable (consumer and pro-sumer) but Canon's consumer camcorders do pack a lot of image quality in at a low dollar point. Just how controlble is it now? I had the old HV20 (tape) camcorder that looked identical footage, but was a chore-pain to impossible to control to any deep level. More like manual compensation for 1 aspect at a time vs manual. How is your experience with this much newer camera?
It sounds like you are a much more experienced and advanced user than I am. I have not played around with any of the fine controls on mine yet. I can try it out and get back to you but I have family in town right now.
But you are correct... there are no threads on the lens so you cannot use any lens accessories.
I snatched one from ebay..
works great!!
Question tho. I have SD cards that it will not read. Is it because they need to be formatted within the camera?
I was sent 2 SD cards with the camera, & those read perfectly, but the ones I already had, when I try to use them, I get this message, "Cannot read this card"
One of the SD cards is exactly the same as the 2 cards that was sent with the camera, & it's new.
I have one video on it, that I copied from a computer, is that the reason the camera won't read the card?
Or is it because I formatted the card on a computer, & need to format it in the camera?
Thanks in advance..
I am pretty sure it is formatted incorrectly. Once the computer formats it the camera won't be able to read it. You should be able to format it within the camera menu.
@@LDSreliance 100% right. It worked.
1 more question, if u don't mind.
Grainy footage?
Is this only because of low lighting?
I haven't went outside yet..
Yours looks great, which is one reason I brought one..
Even with the slight grainy footage, it still looks pretty good on my plasma TV..
It's so small it scares me...lol
But I needed to graduate from Mini DV, I'm late, but I had to get away from those, always feared the tapes crinkling during playback, which has happened once or twice...
With this camera, am I able to add footage that was not recorded from the camera on the SD card from my computer to be viewed on the camera?
Sorry it's so long..
Thanx 4 your help tho'..
What video format is it in? Is the video formats compatible with windows or Mac? :)
Aly Tomita idk
Thanks for the test. .I just picked up this camcorder to replace an old 2005 Sony DV tape camcorder .So far its great. for a every day use.
One issue I did notice is the viewfinder is alittle red tinge on it and not really clear .I dont know if its defective or thats what it suppose to be.Please chime in if anybody has any info on that issue.
I notice the fuss on its bad in low light on Amazon. They got to read the instructions and set the camera to the low light settings.I had no problem with it in low light. Its going to fill the void until I get a semipro Sony later on .
To bad I missed the sale at BH photo.I end up getting mine at BJs for $199 bucks.I would not pay any more for it.
I don't notice any red tinge on the viewfinder.
And I paid full retail $299 when it first came out and don't regret it. Awesome camera. Would do it again tomorrow.
Thanks man, you helped me decide...Just ordered mine from B&H Photo on sale..... $169 and free shipping...
Wow! That is a huge steal. I am jealous. I paid $300 for mine when it first came out and it was worth it. Enjoy it!
IDK if you still use this, but I would love to know whats the recommended settings for high quality video? I use this camcorder too. But I can't seem to figure out how to correct this. I notice light pixels, little fuzzy, lighting isn't the best and annoying borders. Any help would be great. Thanks!
I don't use this any more. I usually kept the settings on the defaults except I used the highest quality settings as far as using AVCHD (MP4 will record in 720p) and 30p and 35 Mbps or whatever is the highest. Lighting is a problem with this camera so shoot in broad daylight or very bright indoor light.
Could you please tell me where/how to use the flash...for taking still shots...? Thank you so much!
I don't think it has flash. Sorry
Thank you so much. You are correct. I went to my local camera shop, and they said the same thing. Thank you again.
Barbara Butler
Sorry! Thanks for watching.
Thank you!
Im really looking forward to getting this camera, I don't know much about cameras so I was wondering, would this be okay to do simple likes like say record events I go to like a football game, where I would have to move the camera?
Also, are there any cheap tripods of good quality I should get with this camera, and would I need a certain size tripod or are they all the same?
Yeah, this is good for sports. I recorded my daughter's soccer games last season with it. I would grab a cheap tripod off Amazon like this (www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-60-Inch-Lightweight-Tripod-Bag/dp/B005KP473Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1412563280&sr=1-1&keywords=tripod). That is the one I am using and it works just fine. It is plenty tall enough but can be adjusted to most any height.
Sounds good! I'll be sure to get a tripod with this camera. I have really unsteady hands, you know? Another thing, I found this SD card and it looks good but I'm not sure if it is or not, because again I have almost no camera skills. Here it is: www.amazon.com/Transcend-Speed-Class-Memory-TS32GSDHC10U1E/dp/B008CVHLT2/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1412562301&sr=1-5&keywords=sd+card
JustShoot03
Yep, that will work. Never heard of the brand but that doesn't matter really these days. All the brands get their flash chips from only a handful of manufacturer's anyway. 32 GB will give you a little over an hour of record time on the highest settings (much more if you turn down the settings).
Thats alright, I may only need 16GB who knows? I'm not a studio producer/vlogger I just want a camera for things like sports and etc.
Anyways, thanks for the help and I hope to see some more great work on your channel :)
Thanks!!
What SD card do you recommend?! IS 32GB good?!
Buy the biggest card you can afford. I bought a 32GB and it meets my needs but only because I move my videos to my computer frequently. If you are lazy about transferring your videos or you shoot video for hours and hours, you will want something bigger.
Hello. Does this camera have any internal hard drive memory or is all video put to the sd card? Im looking for a decent camera without any internal memory. Thanks.
No, it does not have any internal memory. It requires an SD card to record video.
ok, I'll do that. I have windows 7, so do I need to down load a vedio player
+MrIdance1 Usually no. The videos are saved in .avi or .mp4 formats. You might have to download a player for .mp4 depending on what pre-installed software came on your computer. But the default setting on the camera is .avi.
Hi. How do you adjust the settings to record without the date and time stamp?
Try turning off the option "Output onscreen displays". That is the only thing I can see that might be doing it.
Sick does it have a Manuel exposure??
No, I believe you have to get the M model (M500) to get that feature. Sorry
This camera is pretty good for amateurs and the price is expensive around $300 but on black Friday this year its around $160 so im gonna get it but i would also need a tripod so are there any cheap but good tripods out there?
Where is that sale going on at?
$300 is not expensive for a full hd camera with an external mic port and all the features this has. But it is $199 right now on Amazon with free shipping so that is a steal. I paid $300 when it first came out and I don't regret it at all. I bought the Amazon Basics tripod for about $18 at the time (now it is $22). www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-60-Inch-Lightweight-Tripod-Bag/dp/B005KP473Q/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1416582191&sr=1-1&keywords=tripod
Paige Gladstone Best Buy
Eternal Pig - NahBuhYeah
Hm, must just be in your area. Not seeing it on the ad for Black Friday at my Best Buy-lucky you! Enjoy it.
Paige Gladstone It turns out I got confused with the ads on Best Buy i recently checked on their website and they're selling it for $200 now but I'm still going to get it for short films
awesome camcorder :D thanks man!
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
i have the R500, how do you play the card in your computer?? all i see is to look for a MPL player but cannot find one ....
+Top flight I've never removed the SD card and put it in my laptop or card reader. I've always just hooked up the USB transfer cable to the camcorder. Have you tried that? If you are missing the cable, they are super cheap: www.amazon.com/BIRUGEAR-Canon-VIXIA-HF-R400/dp/B00GX4E82S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1461764618&sr=8-1&keywords=canon+r500+transfer+cable
Are you recording in 1080 at 60fps in MP4 format?
Yep and 35 mbps, which is the highest quality the camera can shoot in.
is there a manual focus option? plss answer thank you!
No, there is no manual focus.
Thanks for this video!
Is this Camera good for filming soccer matches 90 minutes ?
btw sorry for my english, Thank you !
If you bring a spare battery, yes. The battery lasts for about 100-110 minutes but, as a soccer fan myself, we both know that games last longer than 90 minutes with stoppage time, etc. I would bring a spare battery and swap them out at halftime. Or if you had a way to charge the battery during halftime you could do that and would not need a spare.
Thanks for watching! Be sure to "thumbs up" my video to help support my channel.
Would you recommend this to record soccer individual highlights?
+Fuad Fibra Yes. This camera is great in broad daylight and can shoot a whole soccer match with one battery if it is fully charged. You'll need a big enough SD card, though, especially if you are shooting in highest resolution settings.
+LDSreliance perfecto thanks for the recommendation.
Fuad Fibra
You are welcome! Thanks for watching.
El vídeo lo rende rizaste en 60fps o así lo graba también ?
Yes it shoots 60fps.
LDSreliance but not while in cinema mode, this drove me nuts first few hours with the camera, i thought it was broke
Good to know. Thanks!
I had a question.. Can you pass on the videos to iMovie ? I heard you couldn't :( help!
As long as you record in MP4 format, you should be able to use it in iMovie. Previous Canon Vixia series camcorders would only record in AVCHD, which is not mac compatible.
im undecided between this and the elph 300
They are for different purposes. They both can do still shots and videos but one does stills better and videos worse and vice versa. If you do mostly photos I would say go with the Elph. If you do mostly videos, go with the Vixia.
one of the reasons I like the elp is that I can carry it around easier and conceal it better much like a phone...but yes im more about the video than the pics
The Elph will have video about the same as a smart phone. Good video but won't have the same features and capabilities as a real camcorder. I would save the money and use your phone if you have one since you said it is more about the video.
The Vixia is actually pretty small. You can't put it in your pocket but it is about the size of a toilet paper roll.
and if you look at amazon. For some strange reason the vixia is cheaper. I don't understand that. Shouldn't it be the opposite?
It is hard to say. I don't pretend to know how the pricing works. $199 for the Vixia is a great, great deal. I paid $299 the first week it came out and I think that was a good deal, but $199 is awesome.
are you using the internal mic or an attachment mic?
That is the internal mic. As you can tell it is susceptible to wind and causes it to get quieter when it detects loud sounds like the wind. I got a lavalier mic and it sounds so much better.
will it give off the booked effect?
+Jr Rose I'm not sure what that is. Sorry
why is the high quiality is in 720 hd and not 1080p ?
What do you mean? It was filmed in 1080p and it plays on youtube in 1080p. Where are you getting 720p?
on your video ! the max setting i can put it is in 720p on your video
i cand sent you screen shot but yeah i can't put more than 720p and actuallt i might buy this camera that's why i am watching videos from it...hope you can help me telling me is it worth it? we do alot of special effects with green screen, and stuff and i am not sure if its going to work
Hmmm, I don't know what to tell you. It goes up to 1080p in the options when I watch the video. It is definitely a 1080p camera. I think it is worth it and I paid full price. You can get them for $249 now.
Hossele Change the browser and u`ll get 1080p. I have the option for 1080p and i watched the video in 1080p. If you`re using google chrome, try watching the clip with mozilla.
How do you take a picture on it
There is a button on the touch screen that you can hit to take a still shot. I think it is up in the top right corner but I don't have my camera in front of me right now. Let me know if you can't find it.
I have the same camcorder! I totally recommend it for beginners:)
+Amerikinz14 Yep, it has been great. Even my wife can shoot with it and she knows nothing about them.
+LDSreliance cool:)
Does it have IR. infrared
No, it does not.
Is this the refurbished camera
No, it was new.
What do you use to use to edit your videos?
I just use Windows Moviemaker since it is free. Someday I will get something fancier but right now it works.
Ok, thanks
LDSreliance
You should try PowerDirector 10 or 11. or Also Serif Movie Plus X5 or X6 There is a sale on .
I'll check it out. Thanks!
Does it auto-focus during filming? Sorry if you mentioned this, I'm not a very patient person (in exchange for your time you shall receive likes, good sir)
Yes, it auto-focuses. As with any auto focus, though, the farther you zoom in the harder time the camera has picking out what you are trying to focus on. So if you are zooming in for a super close up, it is better to zoom in more slowly and then it doesn't have problems.
LDSreliance thank you!
how about low light?
Low light is not very good, unfortunately.
Thanks for responding!
Bed A. You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
What SD card do you use ??
In this camera I use a PNY 32GB Micro SDHC card.
LDSreliance would a San disk work on the camcorder ?
Yes, it will accept pretty much any full size SD card (or micro SD card with the adapter that it comes with for full size slots).
LDSreliance thanks!
You are welcome. Good luck!
Is it waterproof?
No, it is not waterproof.
@@LDSreliance oh .. hmm.. too bad.
thank you
+MrIdance1 You are welcome. Thanks for watching! Be sure to give me a thumbs up to help me out.
Very good! *o*
Thanks!
I'm actually gonna buy the camera
+king kazie Nice! Thanks for watching and good luck with it
ive never had a youtuber reply to one of my comments, thanks
king kazie
Well I try to reply to every single comment. Sometimes it takes a few days.
Urgent am disappointed in this camera I just bought the picture is not nitida tell me which settings to make, when I put my cable hdmi to my screen looks like fuzzy porfa urgent reply greetings lima peru
corazonenamorado2005 The default settings on the camera should be pretty good for most shooting. I would recommend changing it to AVCHD at the highest bit rate if you want to display it on a tv.
LDSreliance thanks for answering a query means more please AVCHD format mp4 is better because here in my country I wish to work in films of all types and desire to look good we are ok please answer thanks anyway
The easy answer is if you are making the videos to look good on a TV or Blu Ray then use AVCHD. If you are making it for computer or internet use then use MP4.
LDSreliance Beware thanks greetings friend lima peru blessings God bless you
Go to "Recording Setup" and then
change "Movie Format" to AVCHD. "Video Quality" should be 60p. Go back to the main menu and choose "Shooting Mode" and make sure it is set to Auto.
You should have crisp HD video with those settings connected to an HD television.
again there is no way to t ell is this really shot with a R 500 or something else I feel it looks to good to be entry level even if Canon makes nothing less then the R 500 and now the R 600 what is the difference???
david levine I guess that is true. I have nothing to gain by lying about it, though. I am just an average dude making videos. I am not sponsored or receive any money that would color my opinion or review.
cool. =)
Agreed. Thanks for watching!
Ed templeton? he looks just like him
SynthHappens I look like him?
The audio quality is not good -_-
Yes, it is outdoors and doesn't like any wind. You never want to use
the internal mic on a camcorder if you can help it. Fortunately, this
is one of the only camcorders at this price point that has a mic jack.
LDSreliance what about canon vixia hf r700 ??
Dip Y2j
Yes, that is the newer model to get. The R600 was no different than the 500 but the 700 seems to have a few small improvements but the image quality will basically be the same.
LDSreliance I need the camera for my youtube channel. and i have a budget under 300 USD only . so what's the best camera for making funny videos... like SMOSH
Dip Y2j Well with your budget the HF R700 is definitely a contender. You just have to have proper lighting, so make sure that the area where you will shoot your videos has lots of light or get a cheap studio lighting kit for $50.
Dog is like wtf?!
Eddie Artistic Haha yeah my dog sneaks into several of my videos.
Good closeups for the price, shit landscape shots.
Yeah, that was my first time trying either one. I am sure if I tweaked some settings I could at least get half decent landscapes.
