    The power of the pentatonic.
    I don't think anyone has ever been able to utilize it as well as Gilmour.

    Guys, he was playing a damn near acoustic show, he was making everything different, stop worrying about the tone being the exact same, it wasn't even the same as the album live back when they first toured it, sheesh.

    Dave could play this on a $10 fisher price Walmart guitar and it would still kick ass.

      True. That saying has been kicking around awhile ... I first read it as "he could make a toy ukelele sound like a Stradivarius."

    I've heard many of Gilmour's solos to this song that he has played live. The one thing that all of the solos have in common is that not one solo is played the same live. So many guitarists now a days don't tune into their soul, it's all about hitting the same note because that's what the people want to hear. It looks like Gilmour doesn't care what we hear, and that's what makes him incredible.

    Honestly, I LOVE the tone on this. No, it doesn’t have that singing, soaring sustain of other performances, but if Dave wanted that, he would have gotten it. The snap of the string attack has such a lovely sound; not un-like a good Telecaster, but with it’s own flavor. Someone else here referred to it as a “grunt”; I like that analogy.

    I think this is a brilliant version of this solo and the gretsch offers a clean jazzy and blues like sound yes it's tone is a dirty big muff style sound but this is different and a change can be good. Can't it?
    No, I think the gretsch did good in this situation

    • @90AlmostFamous
      @90AlmostFamous 9 лет назад +3

      +Barry McAllister it's good not only from change perspective but also good for making observation, especially his bends and vibratos are much more clearer here and also those small nook and cranny sounds that make his playing so unique and toneful. This video is a goldmine for any guitarists who aspire to play like him, anyone who complains about that gretsch should open their mind.

  • @MattScales

    'That Great Gretsch Sound'! Sounds quite different from the 'strat' version, much more grunt and crunch! I like it very much indeed!

    i just "love" it when people judge musicians like david gilmour...when i saw the thumbnail of the video i thought "oh,he's got the wrong guitar,what happened",but when you listen to him play...especially if you have played a bit yourself...you know...all you can do is be thankfull that you have the chance to listen to somebody that has the talent to give some of his life to an instrument made of wood and metal,so that he can communicate with us through it...respect...

    • @BenCulture
      @BenCulture 10 лет назад +7

      I've never played one, but I imagine it's a really fun guitar to play. I feel as if I'm listening to the song in a different language. I wouldn't want to go back in time and convince him to use a Gretsch on the studio version, but this makes for a very nice variation on an all-too-familiar solo.
      Yeah, I said it: I get tired of "Comfortably Numb" sometimes. And if a fan can get tired of it, imagine how HE feels!

    I WAS a teenager in the 70's... Saw em at Cleveland Municipal Stadium in the late 70's, around when "Animals" was released.... A split second before the first note was played, a very low flying jet pierced the sky and did a fly over and i a flash the band began to jam...
    It set the tone for a GREAT CONCERT !

    The Gretsch was one of the few guitars he held onto when he auctioned most of his collection for charity. He says it's more difficult to play than a Strat. As the owner of two Jets, I can confirm access to the highest frets is quite tricky due to the large neck joint. The ones with Filtertrons do sound fantastic, though.

    The biggest part of Davids sound are the huge hiwatt heads he uses. Most guitars should sound the same going through it. Keep in mind that his Strat uses EMG's and is equipped with a mid boost switch (correct me if I'm wrong though). I doubt the Gretsch has nearly as much signal going into the front of his amps as his Strat does. Strats also have a nice second octave. The Gretsch would be much harder to play past the 12th fret. To whoever reads this which guitar would you want :)?

  • @TheJFCDG
    @TheJFCDG 12 лет назад

    I see your point BUT this concert was totally different in all aspects. It was more intimate, more quiet. If I compare this to the 80's ones when he was freaking electric and amazing, this is just as peacefull as great too. I love it because you can see how versatile he is by choosing the mood and tempo of the songs. You have lots of this solo in a "crazy" mood, this is appreciated because it's soft, short and perfect. You go to sleep with this. With the others, you get up.
