Yes, "Johnathon's" channel. Mr Ferguson is the Keeper of Firearms and Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds, England. He's an expert in firearms going back to antiquity. Johnathon has written a book all about England's strange love for bullpup rifles.

To call Jonathan Ferguson an expert is an understatement. Preserving the history of arms is his entire life.
    From his wikipedia article:
"Ferguson received a Bachelor of Arts degree in archaeology from the University of Exeter in 2000, and a postgraduate diploma in museum studies from the University of Leicester in 2002. He held posts at the Colchester Museum, Imperial War Museum Duxford, and National War Museum of Scotland before joining the Royal Armouries Museum in 2009."

Many of the other youtubers you've reacted to in the past are solid people with a good knowledge, but JF has the knowledge and credentials necessary to genuinely deserve the title of expert. So while he may not play a certain game, he still comments on innacuracies vs things like rule of cool, balancing, technological limitations for older games, etc. Funny how gamespot has given birth to some of the most fun firearms content in YT, at least for me.

  • @armynurseboy

The rifle is essentially an AR-15 pattern rifle. It's not an M16 because its not built to M16 specs (and an M16 is essentially just a specific version of an AR-15 rifle). The reason why it's not officially called an AR-15 is that while the technical patents on the gun have long expired (thus why everyone can legally build and sell clones), the name "AR-15" is trademarked by Colt and that doesn't expire. So any non-Colt rifle will have a different trade name for what is essentially a clone lest they get sued by Colt for trademarked infringement.

No the suppressor will not back off. Contrary to basic logic, direct thread suppressors are more likely to back off despite having more thread engagement. Suppressors are clocked. If it starts backing off, the clocking changes and the point of impact of the round deviates pretty drastically. A quick disconnect mount positively engages the suppressor to the mount with tapered bearing surfaces preventing it from turning with cam locks. QD mounts are the most repeatable and the most durable mounting solutions for a suppressor.

As you’ve probably sussed from him working at a museum Jonathan Ferguson is mainly a firearms historian, and every week the Royal Armouries posts a silhouette of a weapon on various social media platforms for people to try to identify ahead of Jonathan’s video. Sometimes it’s a very recognisable shape and that usually means it’s a trap - the obvious SA80 a few weeks back got me because it turned out it was actually a left handed SA80. And because it’s Royal Armouries they have some really weird and wonderful stuff. Boarding axe with a flintlock pistol built in? Yeah, they’ve got one and it looks as bonkers as it sounds so they did a vid on it.
You’d probably also enjoy Ian McCollum @ForgottenWeapons videos. He’s another firearms historian, though he often posts his runs at shooting matches too. He’s got a good series on the SA80 too, starting from the initial concepts, through the prototypes and pre-production rifles, and into the L85A1, A2 and finally A3. It’s quite a story and in hindsight may explain why they made such a Horlicks of L85A1. I think he has a video on the L129A1 you used as well.

The new A2 variant of the L129 that you trained on is pretty cool, visually looks very similar to this with a similar handguard and the same FDE colour, but is essentially an updated design of the L129 underneath, just with a calibre bump up to 6.5 Creedmoor, apparently flatter trajectory than 7.62mm NATO so it gives a couple of hundred metres extra effective range.

  • @ShOCKeRpb123
    @ShOCKeRpb123 4 дня назад

So, IIRC, the Knights suppressor attachment used a ball bearing type QD lock (you can see the dimples on the muzzle device) with a screw down collar to force the bearings into the dimples, which should also have a ratcheting locking mechanism. I can guarantee you, properly mounted, that suppressor isn't going anywhere, especially after you have shot a few rounds through it, and that entire mount has expanded from the heat and thermally locked the muzzle device to the mount. Once it cools down, it will still take a little higher than normal force to "break loose" then it can come off by hand.
What I always find interesting is how nearly everything on this rifle is off the shelf components outside of the fire control group.
And yes, Knights Armament is regarded as the most prolific manufacturer of some of the absolute BEST AR platform weapons on that market.
And if you DO end up going to the Royal Armories Museum, make sure you catch USA's counterpart next time you are over on this side of the pond, the NRA Firearms Museum in Fairfax, Virginia.

Royal Marines are getting all the nice kit recently, Crye uniforms instead of the regular MTP fatigues, cool new patches which evoke the Commando patches of WWII, and now this.
It would be really sweet if they could get some assault boats like the Swedish CB90 to supplement their other raiding craft, I know the Royal Navy had some on loan back in 2011 for evaluation.
It's really interesting that they're focusing on not over-tasking the SAS/SBS so they're more able to focus on the actual jobs they're good at, SAS famously solved the London Iranian Embassy Siege, but now they've trained up dedicated counter-terrorism police units to handle that kind of job, they've been involved in training but now they're training more Royal Marines and Army units to be able to handle that task of counter-insurgency and asymmetric warfare training.

L129A1 would technically be an AR10 not an AR15 - but essentially a similar platform and was used to increase range as In afghan we found the range of L22A1/A2 and C8 was not ideal.

The color on the rifle in the gun world is "FDE" or Flat Dark Earth. My personal favorite color for kit. Also Knights Armament only does military contracts very high end rifles. Hard to find as a civilian or expensive. Why alot of "NATO death squads" run them haha.

Surprisingly this is about the same length and weight as the SIG M7 but in 5.56 and I think this one looks nicer (both are about 9 lbs unloaded, typical AR-15s are about 6-7 ish)
The suppressor becoming loose is most likely not a problem as most suppressors nowdays require special mounts on the muzzle device that allow the suppressor to be torqued when you screw it back on

This is about 9 pounds unloaded WITH an LPVO, red dot, and suppressor. The SIG is around 9 pounds with no optic and a suppressor.

I believe new British vehicles are also painted in a colour similar to FDE, as opposed to the older dark yellow "light stone" for arid environments they changed to "army brown", did help a lot when vehicles got transferred to and from the Middle East back to Europe, FDE and similar brown shades do better in a mix of environments than going very light sand or dark green, if you're going to go a single colour for kit that's supposed to be used everywhere then FDE is the shade to go.

That scope is actually pretty small, at least in length, compared to other LPVO style scopes. It is using a main tube with a larger diameter than is common. The larger tube allows for the shorter length and still maintain good optical quality.
Last I checked, it was still pretty hefty though. Close to 22oz, their prior gen was close to 30oz, so it did lose some weight.
I have a Nightforce 1-8x LPVO and it is around 17oz. Which is light for an LPVO that is 1-8x and built tough enough for a hard use rifle.
Shedding weight was the reason I chose that model. LPVOs have their place, but I do not think that they are the best option for your typical soldier. They are better for specialist rifles and specialized units. I think the typical soldier is served well by a lightweight prism optic like the 4x ACOG, paited with a mini-reflex like a Trijivon RMR. You have good medium range performance and decent close range performance as well. Combined an ACOG and RMR with mount, weighs less than my scope without a mount. The only downside to an ACOG is the eye relief is short.
That quick detach suppressor... The ratchet mechanism will keep it from coming loose, if it is designed well. Being from Knights, i suspect it is good to go. The biggest issue is potentially carbon locking the suppressor, where it doesn't want to come loose from carbon build-up. Good design can mitigate that issue.
The heavy barrel profile, I like that they dimpled it to shed some weight, while retaining the benefits of the larger diameter... I am not a fan of heavy barrel profiles on a carbine. Make them more unweildly and front heavy. I prefer a balanced profile, that is lighter than a standard AR Govt profile barrel, but not a tin pencil barrel.
If the dimpled barrel can keep the weight down, to not much more than the standard barrel, it could be worth it.
There is a lot to like about the Knights rifle... But the perfect AR doesn't exist yet. The ergos, controls, handguards all are great on this rifle... But it needs a couple things.
In addition to the new bolt design from Knights, I also want to see the modified lengthened bolt carrier cam track from LMT, and there is a reduced radius cam pin design from another company as well. All three of those combined would make the AR rifle the best it can be, but that would require three companies to allow their patents be used in one rifle.

IIRC, the Vortex used on the UK contract is NOT the Razor Gen 3, but the Razor AMG 1-10, and it's supposed to be around 18oz for a 34mm tube LPVO, which is wicked light for such a girthy bastard.
Notice the turrets on the scope and the milled out pockets around the huge dials. That aint a normal offering.

    • @marine6680
      @marine6680 4 дня назад

@ShOCKeRpb123 If that is the case, that is very good for weight.
Stupid expensive as well. It takes a lot to get a 1-10x LPVO to be compact, light, and have excellent optical qualities.
I don't need a 10x on a general purpose rifle. 1-6x is actually fine. If I could get an LPVO with the quality of the Vortex or the Nightforce in 1-6x, and get down under 16oz with a mount.... That would be interesting.

True, same reason they didn't use the L85 for the most part and why they kept using MultiCam even after the rest of the armed forces adopted MTP, they don't want to be immediately recognisable as British when they don't want to be, an AR variant is used by pretty much every premier special forces so them using originally M16s, then other variants like the Colt Canada offerings made a ton of sense.

Not quite. Him and Ian went into it on a joint Q & A video a while back, but the Royal Armouries museum does face some restrictions in the types of weapons they can easily acquire, in part due to British import laws and in part due to the weird relationship the museum has vs used to have with the UK government and military. Some stuff that is impossible for a private collector to acquire they can get easily, but there are quite a few guns Mr. Ferguson would dearly like to add to the collection that are sadly out of his reach, at least at the moment.

This is not relevant to this necessarily, and although the humour is a bit drier, if you want instructional videos about shooting rather than guns per se, check out Paul Harrell's channel when Paul was in the videos, ie, over a year ago. He is fantastic and what I would consider an expert even if he doesn't like to use that term about himself. I am not beating on Roy, who now presents most of the videos, but Paul is a tuff act to follow.
