Dick Van Dyke was dancing up against something called the Sodium Screen (the technique at the time used to combine live action with animation). He had to pretend to see the penguins in his mind
Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke were absolutely amazing, it just seemed so magical when they made this movie! Now this is the song I want to hear playing when I enter Main Street in Disneyland!
So true!!! These days with children’s media, it’s either slapstick or hidden adult jokes. A jolly man tap-dancing with animated penguin waiters is what *true* entertainment is!
0:39-0:47 The penguins are ADORABLE ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ I just LOVE hearing that squealing they do as they dance with Burt ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ They are so cute ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
When Disney movies were on blue ray & incl bonus features. This dance sequence with penguins was groundbreaking. 3 weeks to film per Dick van Dyke & director. It was Walt’s extraordinary vision to put real ppl with animation back then. These films remain timeless.
Complete chalkwalk drawing scene is one of the most iconic scenes in history of movie-making! I always loved little penguins, & especially that kiss cheek & slap afterwards I was laughing sooo hard! I even had a penguin plush toy & I would dance with him in this manner!
To anyone who may not know, Dick Van Dyke was not a trained dancer when filming ‘Mary Poppins.’ Now imagine filming this sequence an untrained dancer, no music, no penguins, and in those pants. The definition of talented

Bert's a great companion for Mary Poppins' adventures. Even though he's not a child, he's pure hearted enough to participate with her in the magic. He's down with her vibe and respects what she does. You can see that when he talks to Mr. Banks towards the end of the film and helps him put the pieces together.
I remember folks making a big deal out of the human/animation interaction in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" a big deal, forgetting that it had been done before Disney with Tom and Jerry. This is my all time favorite, though and Dick Van Dyke carried it off seamlessly.
The sad thing is that PL Travers the creator of Mary Poppins never forgave Walt Disney for creating this very scene. PL Travers insisted she didn't want animation in the film including this famous penguin dance but Walt Disney went through with it anyway.
Well, at least the second time she saw the movie she admitted it was very well made. Plus, animation gave more sense to the fact they are inside of a drawing.
Love the animation world lol MARY POPPINS TAKe ME THERE and let me LIVE with the cute PENGUINS!!!! Awwwwwww!!! Literally if I see Mary Poppins outside my window after typing this I will have a HEART ATTACK!! Lmao
Ah, it warms my heart to watch a grown man dance with animated penguins
There were penguins in the new movie. He danced on the table 💗😃
@Joan The Cat yes i know

@@zurvanmooney4940 Newer movies are achievements but it's wild to think how insanely challenging this scene would have been for everyone involved.
Lmao 🤣
I appreciate it more as an adult because I recognize the technical achievement here and just how flipping funny every moment is.
The special effects are impressive even by today's standards!
Even the author herself did not like the animation scene with the penguins

When actors could sing, dance without being vulgar like now on days actors, so glad I watched all this great Disney movies when I was a child👏🏼📽🎬🧡
Wasn't this guy always drunk on the Dick Van Dyke show? People said that was why he was so good at falling down during the scenes on the show!

I'm pretty sure an actor's job is to act, and I'm pretty sure these people acted for a children's film. You think you see what I'm describing here?

Perktube1 yep.
He had been watching "Dr. Sardonicus".
One of the most awesome animated songs ever! ❤️🔥
The Madagascar Penguins! 😂
Kowalski, analysis!
Mum took me to the morning matinee in town to watch this. I’ll never forget it. Sadly they don’t make movies like this today. It was pure joy and fun.
The penguins are so cute😍!

Love this Dick Van Dyke is so funny and talented 😂😂
Dick van Dyke dancing (and singing) with penguins. Unquestionably one of the greatest moments in movie history.👍
Just saw the new one. It didn’t even beat this one. It was still good
The songs in the new one don't resonate as much as the original.
The new one was a load of rubbish with awful acting and awful songs .
Nothing will ever beat this. It's a beautiful treasure.

The pinguins are so cute . I love them 💖💕🐧
1:46 - 2:05 explosion of sounds like salsa on the humor with the penguins just tops it off as my favorites.
It blew my mind that Dick Van Dyke had NO dance experience before doing this movie
Really?
For real. Prior to "Mary Poppins", Dick Van Dyke had NO dance experience. Yet, his dance scenes are probably the most memorable parts of the movie.
子供の頃に大好きでよく見てました!このペンギンとバートさんの踊りが大好きで何度も巻き戻して繰り返し観るくらい😊昔も今もメリーポピンズが1番大好きな映画です!何度観ても楽しい気持ちで観れます!

love when bert takes the penguin who just kissed mary away from her
That penguin knew what he did and saw no reason to be sorry.
Dick is magnificent in this movie, accent aside. That face he makes before he slides still makes me laugh. To dance and sing with him would be a joy.
