I have a theory that she was never actually in danger. The way she reacts and gives insight makes me 100% believe she set all this up just to find someone brave or something. I mean the way the rooms are set up are less like a defensive castle and more like a step by step trial or labyrinth. I mean I know it's a video game, and the point is she's an object of fascination, but she is definitely too well put together to be in any kind of danger. That gold is hers and she uses it to play a sick game of suitors.
I don’t think I ever told a game to go do something physically impossible to itself more than I did Dragon’s Lair. I still feel like it owes me at least $100.
My older brother and his buddy would play this after closing hours at the arcade that his buddy’s cousin managed, so they were able to use the same quarter (coin compartment unlocked), and a note pad with pen to write down each of the directional arrow commands to beat the game.
Same, some of this was absolute bullshit with the timing, even when you knew what to do. Kinda cool though how "movie games" have come around a lot since then, the first big one I remember was Metal Gear Solid, but of course there were others like it that just weren't very popular, stuff like Enemy Zero or D. And now there's games like Until Dawn and Detroit Become Human, finding a really great middle ground between a cinematically-presented story, and enjoyable gameplay where your decisions change the plot.
I've always liked Dragon's Lair for being a cartoon video game where everybody seems to kind of realize there's something less than completely serious about reality. And I've always kind of liked Princess Daphne for feeling like she's an in-game actress who knows exactly how stupid this role is and is treating the entire thing as a source for future audition material.
Daphne's parents wanted to make sure she only married the best possible nobleman in the kingdom, so they had her live in a castle full of treasure (treasure that was for her and her future husband's kingdom), then they bought a dragon from a wizzard, probably Merlin, to act as a guard dog for Daphne and the treasure. The dragon would kill all who were not strong or smart enough to slay him, but Daphne was never in any danger as the dragon's job was to protect her. Then finally the bravest and wisest of all the knights in the kingdom killed the dragon and thus passed the test set down by Daphne's parents. And the knight didn't just save Daphne, he also removed a magic sword from a large diamond, this sword was likely Excalibur. It can therfore be argued that Daphne's father is/was King Arthur and in his old age had set up the entire Dragon's Lair quest simply as a way to find the man who could remove the sword by virtue and thus inherit the kingdom and marry his daughter. This also explains why there is so much magic in the quest as King Arthur was friends with Merli likely helped build all the magic puzzles.

There's a certain magic to 1980s fantasy that's lost on our current generation. Everything is so cookie cutter and clean now. Dragon's lair is so simple. Yet complex and fun.
1980s fantasy was inspired by Conan the Barbarian, Fafhrd & Gray Mouser, Tolkien presented in a fashion that was far more nuanced in scope compared to the Peter Jackson films, etc., where most characters were normal people, and he most powerful were simply "heroes." Fantasy for the current generation is based on 80s & 90s fantasy with superhero-level powers mixed in as the norm, not the exception.

I like how in the freeze frames, the knight kinda just looks like he's thinking "damn, that's crazy 😮" the whole time she's being snatched lmao
I both wanted to smooch princess Daphne and wanted a dress that sparkled like that as a kid. 😅
Search for the movie Legend and look for the dancing dress scene...I'm sure you would appreciate the character played by Mia Sara.
Omg right??? I NEED THAT DRESS IT'S SO SPARKLY
❤ Daphne
2:07 That must be a very cold cave.😉
😂😏😉
Considering she didn't cut her way out of that glass globe with those perkies, you know she was faking being captured.
Imagine a modern interpretation of a dragons lair game mayne in a souls style
Just say you’d like an easy mode, mac
The dragon being a moron for keeping the one thing that could kill him right in his room though, in easy access
Then that explains why the princess wasn't so worried about being captured.
A great plot twist would have been that Princess Daphne is the true villain. Each "Dirk the Daring" that "rescues" her is transformed into a dragon who "keeps her imprisoned."
ye old symphony fantastique plot
I pumped so many rolls of quarters into this game when it first hit the arcades.
The knight had a neurons activated moment.
I've always loved the name Daphne for some reason ever since I saw scooby doo. One of the cutest girl names to me.
I feel like 'slay the dragon with the sword' is a euphemism
One of the hardest games of all time.
I hope we get the Dragon’s Lair Games on Steam Someday
This one is on Steam.
Best looking video game ever
Одна из легендарных видеоигр 80х , Дон Блут Гений ! Жаль что в свое время не вышел полнометражный анимационный фильм с элементами рисованной и компьютерной анимации ...
Good lord, the turkey timers on that woman. No animator would get away with that, today.
I can conferm that this was actually a good game!
Me and my family played it together and we all laughed our asses off.
It was free on PS4+ Idk if its still there but I would play it again.
1983: Woman: save me!
2022: Woman: I can save myself.
Oh C'mon, 😉
and then proceeds to fail miserably without the governments' help.
She is so cute in this game! I remember watching my dad play this game when we used to live in our old house! We still have the CD too! Though, its kind of hard to play on my PS5
I remember all the various condesending looks Dirk would give you when you screwed up before turning to bones. 🤣
how this still has yet to become a movie blows me away - i know they tried but still - they have been sitting on our treasure of quarters for decades!!! lol
Makes you think the treasure room is all the money spent to beat the game by people 😂
Love the hand drawn animation of that era, so.much more humanity in it
I recognise this from stranger things
Do you?
I'm one of those kids who happily paid 50¢ per play back in 1983, and paid the "price" to get to the end. I was 13 back then and video games like these were really popular.
Man it's been 40 years since the game was released...
Kids who first played these are 50 by now
Иногда бывают такие принцессы, что думаешь "Зачем дракона зарубил? Такая милая была зверушка"
The thumbnail didn't hook me and I know exactly who Daphne is.
I always loved this animation.
Dark souls before dark souls.
You are maidenless. Rescue the maiden.
*knight is almost crushed to death*
Daphne: *seductive* Oouuuu
I used to own this game on PC. Came out on CDs. It was also one of the very first laser disc games in the arcades.
How many have died trying I wonder
