@@HotStrangedefinitely. Scaring the hoes is more fun imo, and that album is straight bad ass but this is one of the most meaningful, open, honest, albums I've ever hear. And it's Danny's best lyrics for me
This feels like Danny Brown’s version of Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers but more condensed and both show signs of maturity and introspection of their lives/careers
@@bentokeebs yessir - atrocity exhibition is him laying out all his bad habits and depression, but this album is him being 100% honest about even bigger mistakes, losing his ex, seeing detroit gentrified, and running out of time. Very very mature and the only other time an album has been this open to me was mr morale. I know it's early but I think it's danny at his best.
Final song had me in tears ngl, hit so hard. The album feels so mellow but it sums up where’s he’s at now and wrapping up that XXX era of his life and how he’s beyond it. Reallyyyyyy good, I think I agree I like this more than AE. Also Quelle Chris killed these beats.
I think there’s a conceptuality behind Tantor, even the cringe sound effects. The start/end of the song implies that this song is “from a separate connection/channel” so to speak, almost like it’s being observed by Danny or the general listeners outside the scope of the album. It could be Danny looking back on his bombastic persona in his music and reflecting on it in later songs
Woah great take. I took it as him on coke or drugs again, the no no no samples could be him coming down and realizing God damn I'm starting to feel again. "Paid for a therapist I still ain't changed"
Not related to the album, but I really appreciate the editing here where you give snippets of other tracks you're talking about for comparison. As someone who hasn't heard everything that Brad talks about a lit, I really like that there's a chance to understand the conversations throught the video. Thanks Brad!
I think the sound effects on Tantor were chosen with intent. They’re outdated af, it’s like Danny is making fun of himself for being old and making old references. I think it adds charm tbh.
Not even a huge Danny Brown fan (got into his music after STH released), but man what an album. His lyricism and tone on this is nothing like I’ve ever heard before, let alone from him. Definitely an AOTY contender, and probably on par with his best.
Listened to the album before watching this, and Brad hit the nail on the head. It's an incredibly emotional album and one of Danny's most beautiful projects to date. Glad to hear this change if pace coming from him with the forward vulnerability and reflection. Also spectacular instrumentals and mixing, sounds so full and lush.
13:05 the sample is from goodie mob soul food one of the best hip hop albums to come from south it is really really good I highly recommend it trust me you would not be disappointed
The thing that I've learned about Jenn's Terrific Vacation, is that a lot more people need to go and listen to Goodie Mob. Cell Therapy is an incredible song and that whole album in general is very very good.
This entire thing tells the story of how Danny has begun to lose everything due to his reckless behavior. After Jenn's Terrific Vacation, the tone of the album shifts from a more upbeat vibe to reflective and almost mournful. Also, I feel like the sound effects at the end of Tantor might be to indicate the tone deafness of someone who is 40 years old and on the internet (though understanding the fact that those memes are cringe is kind of untone deaf but hey what can you do). That's just sort of my interpretation of the album.
I think of tantor as danny back on coke. Paid for a therapist but still ain't change. The dial up sound at the beginning, and then thr user disconnected sound are him coming up and coming down. The no no no no sample could be the feeling of oh God I'm coming down and I'm starting to feel again.
I listened through the album yesterday in full for the first time. I feel like there were two personalities coming out of Danny in this album and it felt cohesive for the most part. I wish he would blend those vocal styles together in a track, but maybe that's just me. Anyways, you can definitely tell where he was mentally several years ago and while it's definitely dark, he came out with some of the best vulnerable songs to date. I'll keep spinning it, but so far it's an 8/10 for me.
Quaranta technically is a prequel to STH so its nice to see that Danny is having fun with it again. Also Bruiser Wolf kinda reminded me of Grandmaster Flash
I thought it was dope, I think the high energy tracks were better on his earlier albums, but the more laid back tracks on this one are some of the best he has made
The sample on Dark Sword Angel is Cal Tjader - la murga panamena A jazz musician who primarily used horns, I recognize it from a KRS - one song called C.I.A.
Quaranta pretty much the deepest album he dive about his neighborhood and his life tho. I mean, after the good but disappointed one with the previous colorful album that include Best Life, 3 Tearz and Dirty Laundry, Danny didn't feeling weird on being happy. But then, Scaring The Hoes and this album dropped. You can hear again the influence of Atrocity Exhibitions back at him again.
There were some songs that really broke my heart for Danny. Just so happy he’s sober and on a path to healing now - no one deserves it more! Album was amazing by the way
Hey Brad. I don’t know if you’re ever going to see this comment, but there’s this singer I’ve been listening to that I think deserves more attention.
