- After stripping the stain off a deck, its time to sand and stain it. Check out the step-by-step guide to a complete restoration of an older deck. When we got to this deck, it had a water based stain on it that had been applied about a year and a half prior. When we left, it was looking refreshed, and clean. And now, it is time to sand and stain it to complete the restoration!

**Thanks For Watching This Video**
Thanks for the video! Quick question though. Once you're done sanding and before you apply the stain, are you using a leaf blower or broom to remove the dust created by the sander?
New subscriber thanks to Mandy and appreciate all the help Caleb. What was the brush I think his name was Cody using? Excited to try your products.
Thanks Troy! We're always glad to help! The brush Cody is using is a blue Unger brush. They're typically used for window washing, but are great for deck floor staining.
Thank you for these videos!
I have a couple of questions.
How long does the deck need to dry between stripping/cleaning and sanding?
And what happens between sanding and staining… just sweep everything off?
Also, how long after staining before using the deck… putting the grill and table back on, etc. ?
Thank you!
needs to be under 12% moisture.
Do I have to spray the wood brightner before sanding or can it be done afterwards?
before, rinse it off after it dwells for about ten minutes. If you aren't staining after you can leave the brightener on (oxalic acid). Hope this helps.
We have a semi transparent California rustic by BM color on our deck. I hate it! I want to change the color. My husband power washed it 2xs, but we can still see the stain. Do we have to get it all removed before applying a new color? Can we just use a semi or sold stain over the deck? A darker color maybe? I want a more brown color and less pink looking.
We recommend stripping it off completely either by chemical strip or by sanding so that the oil based stain is able to penetrate the wood.
That's an awesome video. Now is the sanding necessary after the stripping? Or is it on a case by case basis? Also what size deck was that you guy's were working on?
This was a smaller deck, around 12x12. Sanding is usually necessary after stripping, as. stripping chemicals tend to make the wood fuzzy and lift the grain. Sanding gives it a better finish.
What's the coverage on your stains?
150 sq ft per gal on rough cut, 175 sq ft per gal on smooth cut
125-150 sqft per gallon on rough cut, 200-225 sqft per gallon on smooth
