How did you start that without pushing in the clutch?
Modern cars have a switch at the clutch pedal itself and the car will not crank unless it is pushed in. But cars didn't have this system back in 1967.

When your not shifting get your foot off the clutch it is really hard on throw-out bearings. I cringe every time I see this.
