Drank the 1st Buffalo Trace Pappy 23yr on March 5th this year with Julian Van Winkle III at Pappy and Co, downtown Louisville at a charity event. Once in a lifetime experience that can never be repeated since it was the 1st bottle. Honored to have shared that experience live on RUclips "Pappy van winkle event Big".
The thumbnail was a big hint, of course, but when you said, "...so subtle, yet so flamboyantly powerful..." was when I knew it was the 20 year. The Pappy 20 year was the whiskey that changed my life last year, and those words resonated in my soul. It caused me to go from a casual whiskey fan, to an almost fanatical enthusiast. It's also a large part of why, in a few weeks, I'm flying almost 2000 miles to visit Kentucky for the first time. (Not for the bottle itself, but for all the other bourbon stuff there.)
Back in the mid-late 1990s I was reading Malt Advocate and saw a hugely positive review for Pappy Van Winkle bourbon. I went on-line and found a site that would ship to me. I hesitated because it was significantly more than I had ever paid for a bottle (total cost: $85!) My memory of the label matched up to current pictures says it was a 20-year old. I was massively disappointed. I remember it being dry, sourish, then bitter on the finish. Tasted like 'wood' and not in a good way. I drank the entire bottle but was forever cured of ever wanting/hunting Pappy again. Good thing too because the secondary prices are laughable. Sounds like your sample, Matt, is a different animal entirely.
"..... It smells a lot like oak now." 😂 You nailed it from the start. I'd love to drink bourbon with you, but I don't think I'd get any of it down because I would be spitting it out from laughing.
Walk into every liquor store and yell "BRING ME THE PAPPY'S", and don't settle for any plain old Van Winkle Family Reserve, they have the Pappy, they're just holding back because you haven't asked loud enough yet
Breaking out the aerator! Looks like a Vinturi. 😊 Does it replace the traditional and classic SJ? The spin-job? The spinerator? Spintastic? Spingina? Spin&tonic? SpinnieMcSpinster? SpinBobSquarePants? 😂
I've had the Pappy 23 Year a good friend shared with me, and it was a literal oak bomb. Not great, just good. All those really great notes I found in the Pappy 15 Year bottle I got a hold of were all gone. I'm happy I got to try it, but it was not worth even the MSRP, IMO.
WTF? I pulled this out today to show a friend. Last time I had a drink was years ago. It's a 2014 release. Utterly disappointing. Nose is world-class. Oak on the palate throws up warning bells and turns unpleasantly bitter and sour on the finish. I'm glad to have it to share with friends. I think of it as my Pappy 20 "Placebo Edition." If they didn't know it was Pappy, I'd wager they'd say the same as me. Over-oaked, and not in a good way. Not knowing, "OMG! This is the best bourbon ever! I love Pappy so much!" I must've gotten a bad year, because you passed the blind test and still loved it. 8^O
This is the second video I’ve watched today where you pronounced “marshmallow” that way. Is it part of your schtick or do you unironically say it that way?
You and your commenters are the first people ive ever seen say they genuinely like the 20 (or 23) year pappys. That is way, waaay too low of proof for that much aging. But to each their own.
Completely let down with all that you hear about it and the type of secondary pricing you see. I just dont get it. I guess Im glad im in the minority that its just not really my jam, even if it was at msrp.
“Elijah Craig 18 with a fancy makeover” is the best description of Pappy 20 that’s ever existed. There is no question.
Walked in my regular store and it was handed to me. Retail, baby! 🥃 (It’s 90.4 proof)
The Chuck Norris of whiskey! Bill walks in and the Pappy comes out.
He only spent 100k before buying the bottle
@@apeekintime Really? 🙄
WJK you always have super cool stuff for MP! Good stuff. I hope all is well.
@@apeekintime probably right

That Buffalo Trace call was instant lol, nicely done 💪🏻

What a fun one ounce Wednesday video today. Hilarious as always Matt and very generous of you Bill to share samples like this. First class for sure.
LMAO 😂 Matt where do you come up with these lines? Jokes for days. Love the video, it really lightens my mood to watch. Cheers 🥃
Well done, Matt. Cheers 🎉
Good stuff! Love these vids! Cheers. 🥃
I can't wait until Advent!
Same!

Can’t wait for my sibs to get delivered I’m excited!!
That's the type of One oz Wed I miss! ❤
I imagine Bill gets all the good shxt fairly easy. He’s someone’s number one customer.
FREAKIN' NAILED IT! BT notes, lower proof, even age... I wonder if that double aerator trick will make regular BT taste like Ol Rip 10?
B. C. Always sends you the good stuff.
From now on, I'm going to pronounce the word "marshmallow" the way Matt did in this video because it's wonderful.
The 23 year my favorite as well, everyone says the 15 and my wallet wishes I liked the 15 the most but 23 is other worldly.
I wonder if Bill Cavanaugh is looking for another friend.
we need yah to do jacobs well 211!
Peewee Hermann reference right off the bat 😂
does that aerator really do anything for the taste?

Hey Matt, is the facebook group still a thing? I requested to join a few days ago, but hadn't heard anything yet.
This is the second video I’ve watched today where you pronounced “marshmallow” that way. Is it part of your schtick or do you unironically say it that way?
The Borat clip 😂

But to each their own.
I got this bottle at retail through the PA lottery earlier this year. Waiting for a special occasion to crack it.
Wednesday sounds like a good enough occasion
A special occasion is now because you are still alive. You can die tomorrow without ever tasting it so drink your bourbon, cheers.
I have 200+ open bottles! I wish I kept more for special occasions. Who needs 2 open GTS?
People gotta stop with the proof bias
Envy kicking in…
I’ve always heard Pappy is overhyped and BTAC is where it’s at
BRING ME DA PAPPY!
Wait, whats One Ounce Wednesday?? (No intro day??)
Hahaha…oh lord now this is a blind! Hilarious.
👍👍👍
I wanna befriend @Bill.K. what a badass

You would buy it at msrp. Don't kid yourself
woo hoo
Or if Elijah Craig 18 was actually good...
