This drinking of hot beverage does not help with the heat... Human body already works a lot to thermoregulated the body via sweating and sensible heat loss. Drinking tea or coffee just spikes the body temperature more. It is basically giving a relief after a while because the body tries to loose more heat by increased sweating. But its just a relatively short period of relief from that increased heat load on the body. It is not a solution. Its just that we like feeling better by going through worser condition.
Yes all pitta decreasing foods are highly recommended in summer. Traditional Indian Medicine Ayurveda, have a scientific system that is divided into 3 "doshas" Vata - air, Kapha - earth and Pitta fire. We all have a constitution made of a combination of 2 of these dosha like Pitta/Kapha, fire and earth. Food too has either fire, earth and air. So if we eat are a predominate Pitta and eat food that are fuel fire, that explains the excess of heat in the body. It is worthwhile learning these Ayurvedic principles, to keep the heat, air and earth in the body under control.
