    As already mentioned in the video, most speakers should be perfectly fine the way they are built by the manufacturer. One thing to pay attention to when putting "upright" speakers horizontally is the rule about the equilateral triangle. AFAIK it's the tweeters that count, i.e. in a lot of cases the tweeters should go next to the screen rather than away from it.

    Another case where I did something or planned something and the next day, Jon features a video about it. I changed my speakers to horizontal position with tweeters at the ends and now this video pops up today!

    I have HS8 speakers, but they don't have those ugly drippy black marks on the woof woof.... are yours older?
    Mine were bought at Sam Ash, maybe 2 - 3 yrs ago. I don't remember what I paid for them maybe like $400 for each? It was in that range. But they are just beautiful white woofers without the ugly black drippy teardrop looking things LOL

    A typical 2-way loudspeaker, that has a tweeter over mid/woofer, when in the vertical position has symmetrical frequency response in the horizontal plane and slightly asymmetrical response in the vertical plane. Meaning that if you move off axis vertically (standing or sitting), the response is slightly different in either direction. All 2-way speakers that have this configuration suffer from this (some are worse than others). It is typically more desirable to have the horizontal response be symmetrical, so it is typically best to leave speakers with this type of design in the vertical configuration.
    Another issue when laying a speaker on its side is that you will typically have more boundary interference which may adversely affect the frequency response of the speaker system (especially the HF).
    So basically lying monitors like KRK Rokits RP4-8 or Yamaha HS5-8 or even Adam A5-8x etc... horizontal, you'll get asymmetry and it'll sound very bad and deceptive when monitoring, the listening positon will also be limited to one specific spot where as if they are set up correctly, you have room to be sat a little off axis when monitoring while still getting the same sound.

    Hi Jon would massively appreciate a little help. I have a pair of Yamaha HS50Ms that are 10 years old now and I want to determine if they are all right before doing any room treatment research. They sound all right in the higher parts but in the busy and louder parts of the song they’re a complete mess - talking of reference tracks here. Going nuts trying to isolate the problem and I am actually considering a new pair. My question is 1. Can I determine the quality and condition of the speaker by listening to it close. Is that a valid method. And 2. If I went for a new pair, what would you recommend. My current choices are Rokit 5, Presonus Eris, and Focal Alpha 50, but would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

  • @ChrisBessy

    I use coaxial speakers, with that design there are two driver in front of each other, eliminating the issue where hi and lower sounds comes from different area's. It's amazing how detailed they are compared to other speakers in the same price range. If you ever get a chance to listen to them go for it !

    I don't have a manual 'cause I bought used speakers. then I put them horizontally, toed in, with tweeters on the outside. the reason is, I think I have a little bit too much mid-high out of them, so I want those tweeters to be away from each other as much as possible. and I'm happy now :)

    How did you specifically know that you needed a diffuser at that particular spot in the studio?

    • @MattVorn
      @MattVorn 7 лет назад

      Basic physics, you measure where the reflections are going to hit, can be done by running a mirror against the left/right side of the wall and wait for the centre of the corresponding monitor hits the centre of the mirror then you mark a dot and then do the same for the opposite side. Same principles apply for ceiling and back walls.

    • @komalthecoolk
      @komalthecoolk 7 лет назад

      MATT VORN I meant to ask what specifically did he hear or feel coming from that spot that he wanted to add a diffuser there? Can you really hear the sound reflecting from a wall that close? The reflections probably take a tiny tiny fraction of a second.

    • @placidtone6454
      @placidtone6454 7 лет назад

      Basically bass when you mix in a corner the bass sounds good and when you play it somewhere else it sounds weak so bass hits the corners and flat surfaces and bounces so use defuser where it hits and also corner.

    • @MattVorn
      @MattVorn 7 лет назад

      Go into an empty room, place one speaker at one end and then stand in the corner, you'll hear that there is a lot of loud low end where as if you stand in the middle, the audio will sound relatively ok. Basically this is when you'd use bass traps in the corner to stop this bass from reflecting and effectively adding up/amplifying itself. The same thing applies with higher frequencies except from if your ears aren't that good and you haven't been producing for long and don't have developed ears then you won't really hear it, but the sound is very much the same just higher in frequency. But even then you don't use your ears, acoustic engineers use maths and knowledge to position diffusers etc... for example, you put foam up where the first points of reflection are, the second point of reflection is usually the back walls/front walls and the first reflection/second etc... is also ceiling too. So there's a lot of common sense in working out where to treat your room acoustically.

    • @2011hifi
      @2011hifi 7 лет назад

      If the room is dead meaning too much absorption ,then you need diffuser to make it live again.
      Typical pro studios are dead on the listening position and live in the back room.
      Size of his bass traps don't absorb sub fqs but rather low mids and highs. Maybe Jon realized and heard some issues with too much absorption of mids and highs in his mix.

  • @Tunemood

    Great question, great topic, just my 2 cents, I had major mix down issues until I measured my room and used the functions that ship with most speakers on the back panel, like Low, Mid and High, cut or boost, these Yamaha’s also have a handy room function for small rooms with standing waves, it’s important to note that low frequencies are longer and need more space to develop, when they don’t they bounce back and cancel our high end, hey Jon, am in the process of getting my wife an another air fryer, post the amazon link and I’ll purchase it from there, but yeah, all in all, don’t forget the wall mirror trick to position your monitors and learn your room by listening to music you already admire, learn your room and you will hardly ever reference elsewhere.

    I have the biggest dillema of a lifetime now. Just spend all morning looking for a new speakers for me and I feel so lost. Hopefully someone could help me here. I'm thinking about getting a pair of JBL LSR305's but not sure if it's a right choice. Looking for something that I can use for music production (it's more of a new hobby than doing it for a living) but I'd like to use these speakers for an everyday listetning too (music, movies, etc). Some were saying that studio monitors are good for it, some don't.

    • @elowine
      @elowine 7 лет назад

      You can of course use monitors for normal listening. Good monitors are however unforgiving and don't make anything sound nicer than it is. Your everyday 5.1 surround set usually tried to "improve" sounds.
      Also keep in mind that monitors are directional like Jon points out in the video. So the sound can change depending on where you are, depending on your room this can be an issue.
      If you have the possibility to listen and compare a few monitors go do it. I know what it is to read reviews all day in the end you really have to hear them yourself.
