This performance was the last live performance of their career, as The Beatles. They on decided to do the roof-top gig at the last minute (note, you should see Peter Jackson's "Get Back" documentary to see the whole context and situation because it's fascinating!), and you should know that this was the winter of 1969, in January, and it's freaking cold up there! They are playing their first live gig in years, they are doing it "on the fly" and they are playing through frozen fingers! The Beatles were/are the best!

@acts, yes, they had quit touring as a live act by the end of 1966. It was just too much trouble and hard on their nerves, you know? (Look up “Beatlemania” on RUclips and you’ll see why) So, the sessions that ended up being on the Let it Be album and the substance of the “Let it Be” film, we’re supposed to be the band getting together, writing new songs, and playing a big gig, at the end of the movie. But the project was very difficult, especially on a timing/schedule sense, as things took a lot longer than planned and all the pressure of the project was wearing them down. Eventually, they threw out the idea of playing a big gig, with all the production requirements (like selling tickets, putting on a light show, etc.) and just decided to make the film about the writing of new songs, from which an album would be released. Then, at the last minute, they decided to play a gig but a free one and to do it on the roof of Abbey Road studios! After the whole process however, they were sadly very close to breaking up as a band. They decided to put out one more album, to go all in on the song writing and production and to let that be their last album. So they never did another live concert again, after the roof-top gig. But you should watch "Get Back" and see the whole story. It's an incredible film!

@@BimuReacts They split up and went solo. There are about fifty reasons. I'd say, it was mostly that their manager died about a year and a half before this. Paul thought the guy the other three were signing with, was a crook. They all were itching to try their luck solo anyway. They all had very successful careers as solo artists. Even Ringo, the drummer.

@@B.R.0101 I think you mis-read my post. "The guy the other three were signing with..." was Allen Klein. John said he was leaving the Beatles. Paul could had waited that out until John changed his mind, but they were signing with Klein and Paul had to quit to keep from signing. Ringo said he thought "the other three got along so well" but that's not what I was talking about.

This is part of the famous rooftop concert, the last public performance the Beatles did. John does lead vocals here as you noticed, if you want to listen to George or Ringo on lead then I'd recommend the following songs:
George: Taxman, Here Comes the Sun, Within You Without You, Something, Only a Northern Song, Don't Bother Me.
Ringo: Boys, Act Naturally, I Wanna Be Your Man, Yellow Submarine, Don't Pass Me By, Goodnight, Octopus's Garden.
Another good Ringo lead is With a Little Help From My Friends, however if you listen to this I recommend you listen to it immediately after Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Cub Band, treating the two as one track, as they lead into each other.

The Hey Jude song you mention as having listened to previously, the lead singer was Paul McCartney and they only recorded that song 5/6 months (July 1968) before this performance of Don't let me Down, which was done in january 1969. Don't let me down the lead singer was John Lennon, the guy with the glasses on and the fur coat. On his right is Paul McCartney and on his left is George Harrison, on drums is Ringo Starr and off camera is Billy Preston playing the keyboards, (Fantastically!!). The Beatles world wide dominating fame and total record setting chart success and recording career spanned a little over 7 years!! 1962 to 1970. Between 1962 and 1970 in the UK they released; 12 LP's (UK catologue) 11 number 1's and 22 singles (UK) 18 number 1's & 13 EP's (UK) 10 number 1's. They are the biggest record sellers of all time, over a Billion sales worldwide and still selling and now in 2023, releasing "Now and then" UK single gaining another number 1!!!

Probably someone already pointed this out: Ringo Starr on drums, Paul McCartney on bass, John Lennon on rhythm guitar, and George Harrison on lead guitar. In this video the electric piano is being played by their friend Billy Preston. Paul and John were the main writers and singers although George contributed a number of outstanding songs and lead vocals, and Ringo had the occasional lead vocal on songs like What Goes On, Yellow Submarine, With a Little Help From My Friends, Goodnight, to name a few.
If you want to get a feel for their very early live performances check out their two blockbuster appearances on the 1960s American television show The Ed Sullivan Show. Then there are their movies: A Hard Day's Night, Help!, and Magical Mystery Tour...although they mimed to the songs in those films. And there are some other television appearances in the '60s though again I believe they always mimed.

The Beatles were: John Lennon (who sang this song and played rhythm guitar), Paul McCartney (who sang lead on Hey Jude and played bass), George Harrison (who played lead guitar), and Ringo Starr (who played drums). John and Paul wrote most of the songs, but George developed as a fine songwriter as well later on. Ringo even wrote a couple of songs during their time together. John and Paul sang lead on most of the songs, George usually sang lead on his songs and covers early on (and usually sang lead on 2 songs per album), and Ringo usually sang lead on one song per album.
After they were signed by EMI, they were cranking out an average of about 2 albums and 4 singles per year. They toured extensively until the latter part of 1966 and only appeared live a couple of times after that (the rooftop was their last live performance, one year before they broke up). In addition to making records and touring, they made several movies, had a radio show on the BBC, made music videos, gave numerous interviews and appearances, and appeared in animated form on a weekly Saturday morning cartoon in the US.
Their impact was incredible and worldwide, and they set all kinds of records (way too much to go into here). No one had seen anything like it before (and there has been nothing like it since).
The Beatles walked down the hall of music knocking down doors on either side that opened up new fields for other bands to go in to explore. They made pop music into an art form that showed everyone that anything was possible. They explored all kinds of genres and combinations of genres and pushed the boundaries of the recording studio. As Alice Cooper said, "Everybody was influenced by somebody, but I think everybody was influenced by The Beatles." One of the many amazing things about The Beatles is how quickly they evolved in such a short time. As Elvis Costello said, "Every record was a shock when it came out. Every single was an event.” Or, as Ozzy Osbourne called them, “The Greatest Band To Ever Walk The Earth!”

This was on top of their recording studio at Abbey Road in London.
The Beatles was created in 1957 in Liverpool, England by John Lennon, who was the singer here. Their initial name was The Quarrymen. The initial members were his school mates. That summer Paul McCartney joined. In 1958, Paul's friend George Harrison joined. Lennon had initially thought him too young, but when Harrison played for him on a bus, John agreed that he was good enough to join. In 1960, they changed the group's name to The Beatles. In 1962, they fired their drummer, Pete Best, and hired Ringo Starr (Richard Starke).
In 1963 they became extremely famous in England. The London Times named Lennon and McCartney the best British composers of the year, which was pretty impressive since rock was a very minor and unimportant genre of music at the time. In February of 1964 they became world famous after appearing on the American variety TV show, "The Ed Sullivan Show." Their music and style were so impressive and revolutionary that almost overnight most rock performers retired. Then, gradually, new rock groups emerged in styles imitative of the Beatles and all modern rock groups are descended from them. I lived through this and observed it first hand. Under the influence of The Beatles and their imitators, rock was transformed from an unimportant minor genre to what you see today. Prior to the Beatles it was almost unheard of for music performers to write their own music, a prominent exception being Chuck Berry, one of a handful of men who invented rock music and probably the primary one. John Lennon Once said, “If you tried to give rock and roll another name, you might call it 'Chuck Berry. '”
They finally broke up in 1970. Don't confuse their later solo work with Beatles songs. You might want to have a listen to their first album, "Please Please Me" which they recorded in a single day. The album was well-received in Britain, where it remained in the Top 10 for over a year.
