  • The Dempster Highway must be one of the roughest roads EVER! Still, it was a goal of mine to get to the Arctic Ocean and I did it! And I'm gonna pay for it too!!$$$$

My wife and i did this wonderful journey this year. It was so nice to explore this vast mostly unchanged wilderness. We left our trailer in Dawson City and took the truck and canopy only. Was 30°c in Tuk. Tried beluga whale blubber and muscox ribs for dinner one night with a local family. Yes the road was rough but so worth it. Cheers Scott. Steve

Sounds like a great trip/experience trying the local food.

WOW. You have officially changed my mind about going to the Arctic Ocean. Jeez what else can happen? Bless you.

@@ncwomanparker1708 I’m so glad I changed someone’s mind. That road is brutal and not worth it in my opinion. No van/motorhome of any kind should take that road.

I like a different perspective. Not everything is 100% positive. I have watched 5 videos and most of them are roses and rainbows.
    Thank you for sharing.
I'm preparing to do this trip next year. I need to see that area in autumn.

@@henryortega8893 just trying to keep it real. Autumn would be AMAZING up there! Scenery is spectacular in the summer, I could only imagine WOW.

My wife and I drove the Dempster this year. Living in Saskatchewan I have driven a lot of gravel roads (including ones in northern Saskatchewan). The Dempster was by far the worst I have been on. Between Tombstone and the NWT border the road was horrible with only a few good sections. Much better in the NWT, however we were stuck in Inuvik when one ferry was out of action for several days. When the mud dries it is like concrete. First and last time we will drive the Dempster. That said the scenery was breathtaking.

I agree that the scenery was amazing, but that road is by far the worst I’ve ever been on. Both me and Uma(dog) now have gravel road anxiety from that disgusting road. Never again!

Scott, that road would have created too much stress for me! You guys handled it well! Except for the mosquitos, it was great seeing the Arctic Ocean! Safe travels to you and Uma!

In hindsight I never should have taken that road. It was WAY too rough and damaged quite a few things.

It definitely is not on the to do list. I heard that the roads were horrible up there. I hope the damage wasn’t too bad. Safe travels Scott.

Ya, everyone I know that took the Dempster said “it’s fine, just take it slow”. Liars all of them! That road sucked, big time. I will be the advocate and tell everyone not to take that road, ever!

I agree this road is a nightmare for most cars/trucks/vans etc, but on a motorcycle it's not too bad. I have done it up to Inuvik 3 times on amotorcycle and last year I went all the way to the Arctic Ocean like you in my van.....what a shiat show...lol. Just after the first ferry on the way back down my fuel pump lost it's negative connection and stopped working. That resulted in a flatbed ride back up to Inuvik....can you guess what that cost!..??? Then the cost of flying in a new pump which didn't need to be replaced but I didn't figure that out until I got back home, an hour north of Toronto. Thousands and thousands in tow charges and un-needed parts, BUT, the bucket list being crossed off almost made up for it! Almost. I will NEVER drive that road again, and I am now too old for motorcycles, so thats it cross it off the need to go places. I'll check in again to see what damages you also received after your trip. I am still finding dirt and dust...a year later!!!

Couldn’t imagine and don’t want to guess what all that would have cost, geez. Glad I was able to make it to Whitehorse where I’m sitting at the dealership writing this. Was definitely a great experience/bucket list trip but NEVER again!

Nooooooo not for me, I wouldn't do that drive for any amount of money, I hope you felt it was worth it, Miss Uma certainly didn't enjoy it, and all that damage 😱 but good on you for persevering Scott, bet you were glad to get back to normal roads again , safe travels 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

To be honest, I wish I turned around. That road was too much for me, Uma and the van to handle. I would never recommend anyone to take that road. Definitely glad to be on paved roads again!

I worked for a company in the late 1960 and early 1970s as a relief manager for guys who had spent a little more time in Canada's remote north than they could handle. I drove a 67 Ford Cortina along the Dempster, pedal to the metal basically blind from dust or snowflakes, with my support system being, the advice that the truckers who used the road were pretty good about pulling people out of the ditch. Anyway tundra is boring and it is a shame that you can't see the midnight sun reflected off the ocean ice from Tuk-tuk anymore.

That’s one crazy, dusty highway for sure! That must’ve been amazing seeing the sun reflecting off the ice, wow 🤩 Not too many people can say they’ve seen that!
How the heck did a Ford Cortina make it on that road?!?
