I've changed my mind about the car being bulletproof. One little tap to the splitter, your day is over. One tap to wall, the toe link breaks and your day is over. And we just learned now that if they get a flat tire, it ruins the rear diffuser and their day is basically over.
Its the F1 approach. Build a virtually indestructible cell for the driver (objectively a good thing) and then make the rest of the thing so aero sensitive and fragile that any bumps ruin your race.
70 y.o long time NASCAR fan from NYC. Love the podcast, love the candid dialogue, love the tough questions to Denny, new total Denny fan and have a sweet Lulu dog in the family. (Totally support the court filing)
Thanks for the shout out Denny! By the way, my PhD is in Fluid dynamics, and air is a fluid. So we study aero, as well as fluid dynamic interactions. Regarding options for improving cup car following and racing, I think that the gen 7 cup car is too reliant on the under body center jet from the front splitter to the rear diffuser. And raising the splitter to get more air into it makes sense for keeping the front jet healthy. But this could also make the cars temperamental in following other cars because of disruptions to the flow into the front splitter making this center jet unsteady causing the floor to lose downforce. I wonder if adding some aero structures along the side skirts to bring in some energy to the rear diffuser through the side jet could help?
Why not just implement a rule restricting the height of the rear end of the car? If raising the rear will remove underbody downforce and put a greater reliance on the overbody, just have NASCAR create a height limit (ie: the frame has to be a minimum of 12" off the ground)
When the next gen car first came out Chase Elliott thought there was still an inner liner for the tire but he was only rolling on the rotor itself. Bring back the inner liner or some emergency type way of getting the car back to pits
My two favorite teams just became 23XI and front row! Thank you guys for having the courage to do what’s right for everyone in the sport not just their greedy selves. The France’s narrative is only killing the sport.
Denny may be down, but I’m still A11 in and while I had to cancel going to Talladega due to my daughter being born any day now - I’m still believing despite the ups and downs, this is the year!
@@closedprofitz thanks! I did a #deardenny on twitter asking him for advice from a veteran girl-dad to a newbie, but I don’t think they do that segment anymore
NASCAR created the rule about accidents on track and putting the team on a 6-minute repair clock (I think they call it the PVD, but I'm not 100% sure. The broadcasters call it "the damaged vehicle policy.") You had that 6 minutes to get the car back on the track and able to get up to minimum speed in order to continue on in the race. It also states that if the car goes to the garage, you're done for the day.) There are only 2 reasons that I can think of that fit that rule. 1) Your car is so badly damaged that you can't restart the engine, and it's quite clear that it can't be fixed and capable of reaching the minimum speed in 6 minutes). 2) You've run out of time on the 6 minute repair clock. Having flat tires doesn't fall into the definition of the rule. I can't wait to hear NASCAR's explanation. smh
Raise the car up with the plug in to get back to the pit box? There’s your fix for short track racing. Make it so the drivers can flick a switch to adjust the back end to get more air flow or reduce. That would be cool to have as a feature. It would make competition more interesting
The switch would raise or lower the rear end like a hot rod, and if the driver raises the rear end to much then they will spin out and learn a lesson. It would be fun for us fans to watch
Seems like the solution to the flat tire issue is have a truck with "spares" and have a safety team quickly change the tires on track to allow a car to drive back to the pits.
i know they'll never see this comment but i actually bought a 2016 Chevy SS because i loved them in NASCAR and if i needed a new vehicle id probably get a Camry, so i think the look of the car does matter alot. i also think the next gen car looks the most like the road car since they literally ran the road cars
I remember back to last year at Pocono where Logano got spun out on a restart and had contact and the safety vehicle towed him back to the pits, I guess just typical NASCAR changing the rules last minute
F1 has technology and innovation. I want to see constant improvements and one team being better than other teams because they "found " something. This parity shtuff is maddening.
Can NASCAR stop just making shit up as they go? They've never parked at car due to flat tires, now after Blaney called them out at The Glen. So, I guess if one of the Championship 4 drivers spins at Phoenix and has 4 flats, he's done.
Do not make the rear spoiler bigger, it'll just create more dirty air. Instead make the step up spoiler smaller so there's less air coming under and more on the front going over. Then teams will have to find the balance between the two. With less air under and more on the front of the car, the more reason to put the front down instead of the back. More front downforce means better turning and more tire wear, so it's a win-win. Don't change anything else about the car though, so no reason to do all that extra mapping or whatever he said the OEM's would do.
I’m a little confused, Denny. You said that the “over body” is insignificant for downforce and that’s the main factor in not being able to pass or remove air from the car in front. However, speaking of the drafting tracks, the outer body is the sole reason for the drag that causes a car to lose position if it’s not in the draft. Will you touch on that subject again? Explain it in more detail
I am new to Nascar this year (I'm an Aussie fan - Followed SVG across the pond). I absolutely love this podcast and am learning so much. I need to ask WHY is Denny so unpopular with fans (booing)? Is it purely fan bias from on-track incidents or is something else I am missing? I just love his honesty on these podcasts and his knowledge and willingness to talk about anything is much appreciated. Second question: Can you please advise the name of the Aerodynamist you mentioned on the podcast as I would love to check that out as well. Thank you.
Fans have hated him ever since his run in with Chase Elliott at Martinsville in 2017. Once you wreck the "favourite driver" in NASCAR, you automatically get hated. Kyle Busch was the same when he wrecked Dale Jr at Richmond in the early 2010's, and he was the most hated driver till he left JGR.
@@RacedayMediaNZ Thank you so much for this reply, I thought it might be something like that. Thanks for the heads up on Kyle Busch as well. I was aware that Chase Elliott has the "largest number of followers" so this makes sense now. From my limited observations, there's probably a "case" against pretty much every Nascar driver, sometimes deserved and sometimes not so I am happy to make my own decisions.
@@cindyobrien1097 No worries. Other minor things to note is the hatred towards Toyota as a manufacturer because it “isn’t a American manufacturer” yet it builds most of its cars, as well as the general JGR hatred as well so you add all those motives up and that’s generally why drivers get hated lol
@@RacedayMediaNZ Ok, so Denny gets the "Triple"! From what I have seen, he is up for the challenge. I had a look at some of the Elliott incidents, he isn't exactly Mr Perfect on the race track and looks like he had since "cashed the cheque" for Martinsville 2017. Looks like Fans have long memories and drivers have short(er) memories. I enjoy following committed race drivers and with that comes some controversy at times. FYI I also followed Senna in F1 so controversy is no stranger to me. Cheers.
So Denny how about this. Screw downforce. Go other direction nose down ass up. Put bigger tires on rear. And you figure out how to drive it. Remember you are a race car driver. Put racing back into the driver. As a fan this shit is getting old
They don't need wider tires anywhere. They need to cut the downforce and go to a narrower tire which will reduce grip and likely cause increased tire wear. That is such an easy change and I call BS to anyone that says otherwise.
Ever heard of Catchup in GTA V Online races? It slows down the lead car. It's such a problem that most races are trying to NOT be in 1st place till the final corner. It's a dumb way to race, I can't believe Hamlin would champion that style of racing
So I will throw my first experience of buying a car here. I drove a hand me down 2005 Honda Accord since I started driving and due to my lack of knowledge and experience in car repairs, lack of tools, and a desire to actually buy a car, I started looking at options. One if my options was a Toyota Camry. I liked some of the previous body styles of the cars as well as being a fan of yours. There was a small part of me wanting to drive what you drive so I looked. I ended up going with year old Accord as it fulfilled other things I wanted in a car and felt better for me to drive. Point of this being that yes the car looking similar to what you race got my attention. I personally think NASCAR should stop restricting OEMs and turn them loose. Put a HP restriction on it, but the way it produces HP shouldn't matter (except no electric only motors.) Cars should more closely resemble their everyday consumer styles, so no crazy downforce additions. Obviously keep all the safety features, but no more crazy elaborate ways to produce downforce. Just put a big engine in your Camry with all the safety features and go racing again. Leave the super technological inovations to F1 and sports car racing. Only tech that really needs to be explored by NASCAR is how much HP can you make and how do you make it imo.
I'm really looking to bring back manufacture differences and styles to the sport rather than it being a spec series producing parity. I believe this parity NASCAR has created is superficial
If you extend the fin, it'll have the opposite effect because it will act as a solid sail, making the car lighter and easier to blowover as it approaches 90 degrees. Bad idea. Anyone who has ever stuck their hand out the window driving downt he road should be able to understand what I'm saying. Leave it alone and work on the underbody because that's where the main problem is since it's basically and airplane wing.
12:30: The races are not better. I remember going to Atlanta in February this year and the drivers in the truck and xfinity series were afraid to break from single file and when someone tried to start a second line, no one joined. Lo and behold, in the cup series on Sunday, the drivers made it two wide the entire day. The drivers in cup series are simply so far ahead in talent and aggression that even if the xfinity car is subjectively "better," that does not mean the xfinity races are better. I cannot stress enough how much more enjoyable cup races are to watch on average. Bad take.
Regular Stage Points should stop in playoffs. Should have Playoff Stage Points. Award stage points just to the playoff drivers based on their order among each other. Only have stage points for half of whatever the playoff cars there are. If there are only 12 playoff cars in a given race, then only top 6 among the playoff cars get stage points.
Realistic you don't realize how big of a conglomerate the big3 and tobacco was overall to American seen living expirences. It built ABB AND F1 It was the #1 world market driver
Let's get rid of all aerodynamics in all forms of racing (except airplanes). I know air is involved no matter what, so aero will always be there...I just mean let's make the care bare bones and work on mechanical grip and HP. No splitter, no underbody/diffuser, NO spoiler. It would work and it would rule.
Personally, I'd just be going with the best strategy to win the race ragardless because if you do that, then you're probably going to get the best finish possible. The points will take care of themselves if you're running up front or winning.
good point, the only trouble is all those not in the championship hunt, can effect your outcome more , so i can see the logic both ways, as a driver i would be more inclined to get points , and if you win bonus, but if you go all out for the win and secure no points , and dont win, shit your done
As a NASCAR fan and gearhead, I get nothing but frustration out of Jarrod's questions. I get that Denny may be trying to use him to bring another generation of fans along but I just don't think this podcast is that place. Maybe he has his own offshoot pod where these aero concepts and general racing knowledge are explained for people with zero knowledge of racing but to have him ask a question, Denny answer it and then him push back is not what I want in a race weekend wrap-up. I just don't understand who these long format videos are for if not the experienced NASCAR fan who wants to geek out on details and Denny's immense knowledge of the "game". I am not here for half the video being taken up with explaining, re-explaining and then re-re-explaining the same simple concepts over and over. If that is the goal of this pod, just say so and I'll take it off my regular rotation.
1) Stages are for points throughout the race to encourage harder racing. 2) The teams run their engines multiple races before rebuild. 3) No car has aerodynamic efficiency when they're backwards because the car is an inverted wing. NASCAR doesn't want fans to be killed because of a flying car...btw I hope this helps you understand what you're asking
I wish NASCAR would get rid of the stages. This supposed to be a whole lot better equipment. It should be able to last without stages. Seems like it'd make it better on you guys
Denny: what's the plan for Talladega? Let's get the 4 Gibbs cars running together about 1/2 lap behind the pack. I have seen that go wrong too though....
My Opinion on Denny has changed too but I hope he crashes every race so I can hear about it on his AWESOME PODCAST! 😂 But seriously watching the race and podcast like weekly church service🔥
Denny Hamlin is not the problem. The pit crew on the other hand is the problem. And continues to be the problem. Should probably try to get that figured out right now. It really is unacceptable that this continues to be an issue.
Strictly making the car rely on df over the body isn't going to magically resolve this issue altogether. They need to figure out and mirror exactly how the Xfinity cars make their df and go from there. Just a little reminder that the Gen6 Cup cars had all of what everyone is saying here and guess what....they raced like garbage at intermediates.
The supra is the only NASCAR that LOOKS like the car it says it is, the cup car looks nothing like a camry, or camaro, although the Dark Horse is pretty close, but still not as close as the Supra.
Your drivers don't realize or maybe you do us. Fans are behind you guys. Always have been. Not so much NASCAR cuz they changed their damn mind so much. It's hard to keep up. I mean it's ridiculous but I agree with you. Take that underpending off solves a lot of problems. You can actually get back to the pits. You can actually race without somebody screwing the air up in front of you. Lot of good things could come out of getting rid of that thing. We're not. Andy Carr here. Bad take.
Exactly 💯
Brake check you in the corners you can play Austin Dillon or Betty White. 😂
I believe the Cup cars resemble the street cars.
We’re on to Cincinnati
Regular Stage Points should stop in playoffs. Should have Playoff Stage Points. Award stage points just to the playoff drivers based on their order among each other. Only have stage points for half of whatever the playoff cars there are. If there are only 12 playoff cars in a given race, then only top 6 among the playoff cars get stage points.
Larson described his car as slow. Is that the same thing as saying the car has no grip? His crew chief seemed confused by the lack of speed.
Realistic you don't realize how big of a conglomerate the big3 and tobacco was overall to American seen living expirences. It built ABB AND F1
It was the #1 world market driver
Who builds the best power
So you're telling me there's not a single new chassis in the Xfinity field?
Let's get rid of all aerodynamics in all forms of racing (except airplanes).
I know air is involved no matter what, so aero will always be there...I just mean let's make the care bare bones and work on mechanical grip and HP.
No splitter, no underbody/diffuser, NO spoiler. It would work and it would rule.
31:19 that's ridiculous
We need to ditch the next gen car and go back the gen 6 with more spec parts
why can't they run the inner liner in the tires on all tracks
Don't drop the jack until the wheel gets tightened, loose wheels will not happen.
It's not rocket surgery...lol
Yeah I Know,The Guys Are Trying To Save Tenths On Pit Road
If the manufacturer that's wanting to come in can't produce the horsepower, they don't need to be in the daggum thing anyway
Can't believe Denny wouldn't sign my shirt yesterday... He likes to ignite the fans, the least he could do is accept it back....
Did anyone see that someone wrote denny sucks on the wall...I'm pretty sure it was at bristol
I wish my 2023 zl1 camaro looked like the hendrick cars but it dont
These guys already jinxed themselves by saying "dont wreck at Dega", now Denny is probably gonna wreck at Talladega 🤥🤔🤐
If this car was built to be so great why do we have stages? Will it not last a full race? And if it's safer, who cares how fast it goes?
1) Stages are for points throughout the race to encourage harder racing.
2) The teams run their engines multiple races before rebuild.
3) No car has aerodynamic efficiency when they're backwards because the car is an inverted wing. NASCAR doesn't want fans to be killed because of a flying car...btw
I hope this helps you understand what you're asking
@@bryonkidder6199Facts
I wish NASCAR would get rid of the stages. This supposed to be a whole lot better equipment. It should be able to last without stages. Seems like it'd make it better on you guys
I disagree with Jared there lol I think the next gen looks exactly like the street cars
That's a good thing! hahah
Except the camry, it doesn’t look anything like the real car
Denny: what's the plan for Talladega? Let's get the 4 Gibbs cars running together about 1/2 lap behind the pack. I have seen that go wrong too though....
I hope not, but it could happen.
IDK Denny, wouldn't a bigger spoiler punch a bigger hole and create even more dirty air?
Just run the car without the defuser.
The Supra in real life is a small 2 seater hatchback, not a coupe with a trunk
Bet they end up changing his pit crew
Denny cried on radio, Chris told him to shut up and drive!
Toyota looks like a race car 😂
My Opinion on Denny has changed too but I hope he crashes every race so I can hear about it on his AWESOME PODCAST! 😂 But seriously watching the race and podcast like weekly church service🔥
Who is ur driver
@@lorir1317 BOWMAN 48 ALLY
Denny Hamlin is not the problem. The pit crew on the other hand is the problem. And continues to be the problem. Should probably try to get that figured out right now. It really is unacceptable that this continues to be an issue.
Strictly making the car rely on df over the body isn't going to magically resolve this issue altogether. They need to figure out and mirror exactly how the Xfinity cars make their df and go from there. Just a little reminder that the Gen6 Cup cars had all of what everyone is saying here and guess what....they raced like garbage at intermediates.
Kb had a better long run car, he was trying to to hold off chastain long enough to burn his shit up.
I know Kyle Laron told his Crew Chief something and he said Something and Kyle said i know what it feels like im driving so dont tell me
Who’s here after the news of the lawsuit?!
The supra is the only NASCAR that LOOKS like the car it says it is, the cup car looks nothing like a camry, or camaro, although the Dark Horse is pretty close, but still not as close as the Supra.
Certainly!
Can we get fedex on the windshield?
Nascar will never allow 1300hp ABB 😊
So glad you guys have got the balls to call this s*** out like it is
Your drivers don't realize or maybe you do us. Doing a damn good job on this show
DH #1
Stay on the bottom line the entire race, statistically you’re less likely to be caught in a wreck
How many NASCAR fans watch a race and say “Wow, I need one of those Fords, Chevy or Toyota” and buys one?
If the OEMs prefer the next gen junk then they will be responsible for the death of nascar
The cup cars look waaaaay more like OEM standard. Sorry Jarad I usually take your side. But not in that one
Big 11 fan but I have to realize Denny won't win it this year again. Not hungry enough for it.
ok .. stupid or no ..... keep tires ... keep specs.... loss the tail wing..... that a simple fix ..
Yea the f1 doesn’t but the GT3s look the same and you can buy gt3 and gt4s. U see
