Pyrite is such a cool little crystal- perfect cubes in a mass of mayhem. It’d be great to hear more about how and why you choose the spots you search, and what makes them more apt to have whichever minerals your searching for. I think it’s awesome that your daughter is involved with this hobby with you- good for you guys!
I love pyrite cubes. I had documented earlier in the day the indicators that I was looking at to identify the high potential spots. However, I did not realize how much wind noise there was and most of the video is unusable. I will try some editing tricks to see what I can salvage and will post it if I can make a story.

Yeah. Deciding when to stop is always difficult. I still had a 6 hour drive ahead of me and wanted some of it in daylight. I hate driving at dusk in places that there are moose.

DUDE ! I like a lot. There are quite a few beautiful crystals that you collected in this video , I recently acquired a nice specimen but it doesn't compare to the larger crystals that you found . Nice video and thank's for sharing your experiences .

Hey, I have a couple samples like this I found years ago at an old gold mine tour place in/near Timmins that has since closed. I have a sample in my science classroom because the students like to see it.
Some of the pyrites by Timmins were associated with gold. You should look over your rock with magnification to see if you can spot any gold. That would be cool.

I have not rockhounded immediately in the Cloyne area but it is dead centre in a huge mineralized area. If you are up in there next weekend, the Bancroft Gemboree is happening.
The best advice is to get into an area where pyrite has been found before and then zero in on the the kind of rock formation that hosts it. In this location, it was the grey sedimentary rock, but not the metamorphic rock. Usually, you will see indications on the outside of the stone before spending too much time cracking rocks. If there is pyrite on the outside, of a larger rock, then usually there will be more pyrite inside.
In editing,, I could see a large pyrite just lying there. The thing about pyrites is they glow when the sun hits them one direction and are dark in another. So looking one direction you see it and from another you keep on walking...
There was a copper mine close by. It also had gold and silver. There was a spot in northern BC where the shales held placer gold. You never know what can be found until you look...
Coloured how? If black, that is silver oxidation. If another colour, then that would be another metal (eg. blue is usually copper, pink is cobalt and green is nickel).
Oh now I understand. I thought you have a rock with silver in it. You have pyrite. If you have a few, put one that you are willing to sacrifice into vinegar to see if the silver goes away after a day. It might be a stain.

I looked it up on a googly map, and had to chuckle that it wasn't even as North as my most southerly guess of Sudbury. To zoom out and see all of Ontario with French River marked as the middle is funny geographically. I understand the population density difference, it's just always funny to me thinking of Sudbury as Northern Ontario. Just curious, what are the chances of finding galena or sphalerite near that place?
The French River is used for tax and Ministry of Natural Resources as a dividing line. Probably other places too. On the other hand, I know some folks in Toronto who think Lake Simcoe is north.

Not for me, for a boy in my grade 7 class who is totally into this stuff, but we live in Canada's southernmost city and we don't have access to the things you are finding. We searched all day for pyrite to finally find "the good spot" late in the day. So even at a good mine, it is not everywhere.

What type of stone are the pyrite found within? It breaks up pretty easily.
Little ones were in banded iron. The larger ones were in shale.

The common line for most purposes is the French River. In this case, it was north of North Bay.
