the disappointing part is, if there is a competition in costume, someone who wears the stereotypical stuff will win, and you who dressed historically accurate, will be dubbed as "lazy" and "unprepared". i've only heard stories like these. some had even wore their grandmother's/great grandmother's dress and they have been called "unprepared". that's sad.
Same for 18th century. Like, so many people don't wear hats for example and when I am rocking in with a tricorn its always "oh, so you are a seafarer". No FFS, thats basic fashion from back then.🙄
@@theexchipmunk its probably because of the pirate movies. it's apparently used for gents back then to show off their new wigs (just googled this haha) and also aren't the high ranking military men wore these or is that a different kind?
@@undecidedhandle The tricorn was not only for show off. It was a general fashion item and a pretty normal hat. Kind of the 18th century equivalent to the baseball cap. With the military it depends, but with military officers the tricorn is actually less common that the Bicorn.
Speaking of braces/suspenders: A tutorial on how to sew on suspender buttons without penetrating the visible side of the waistband would be most helpful! Great video!
The simple answer is loose thread looping (sew it loosely them pull it tight loop by loop to avoid knotting) and using a two whole button or doing one diagonal on a four whole button then the other. Also use a fine needle as it's easier to tell how many layers of fabric you're catching with each stitch.
most slacks/trousers have more than one layer on the waistband. i suggest using a sewing needle to go through just the top one or two inner layers of material with a sturdy thread. i have sewn buttons on almost all my slacks and it works perfectly! just make sure you space the buttons evenly and make sure they are symmetrical with the other side. hope that helps
UK terms almost always make more sense than American terms. Which makes more sense: "waistcoat", "suit coat", and "overcoat", or "vest", "suit jacket", and "overcoat"? I suppose "suspenders" makes a bit more sense, but that's about it. Don't even get me started on "football" and "soccer"...
@@Mr-R.R. This is partially correct. In the US, the term "tuxedo" applies to the full suit, whereas "dinner jacket" applies to the off white jacket. In the UK, the terms "dinner jacket" and "dinner suit" are synonymously used to describe the full suit (with the exception of the off white dinner jacket being refered to as such). As a side note, in Continental Europe, the dinner suit is refered to as a "smoking". The Black Tie Guide covers these terms comprehensively.
Could you do a video on where to look for vintage clothes/suits? Great video by the way, especially since discussing some people's outlandish definition of "dressing formally/appropriate" is somewhat of an evergreen among me and my friends :D

It was very good in tems of costume design actually, it just wasn´t historically accurate. It meant to convey the exuberance, opulence and glamour of the 1920's upper class to an audience that would´ve considered historically accurate costumes to be lame, prudish and uninteresting; and it did so impecably.
If I was to attend a 1920s ball, I would be wearing a proper 1920s gown not the tacky flapper dresses that most people think of as 20s fashion and it would probably be around my ankles in length and I think it would be white silk with gray beaded lace and maybe my hair in a transitional hairstyle where women's hair was in the middle of the Bob cut and the 1910s hairstyle but with an ostrich feather or two.
Wearing a bow tie for evening events is pretty much the best thing you can do. You don't get the feeling of being choked, you stand out from the crowd in a nice subtle way and best of all: you blow everyone away when you untie it later in the evening and people notice that it isn't a snap on bow tie. :D

The clean black tie look, very good. My father wore braces, died of old age 10 years ago. He always wore a coat tho i didn't know the "underwear" part! You dress good. So interesting. I want to take German language lessons. My great-great-grandfather born in 1827 in America had an accent, from his upbringing I suppose. His military records indicate this fact. My grandmother, born in 1900 often told me, "she was a flapper." She maybe was, in addition to being the lifelong breadwinner. How she had time to be a flapper is a mystery!
