I think most people commenting on here are missing the point of this song. The album is called American Heartbreak haha. He's fallen for the girl who doesn't want to be with him but in his mind she's still perfect. "Break me, beat me, tear me down. Drag my ass all over town".
People get it, but the pretty parts can also still represent people's love for a significant other that does return the feeling. That's kinda the beauty of good song writing. It can work on multiple levels for multiple different people, scenerios, situations. My gf and I have been together for 14 years and will be together forever and we still feel the lyrics. It's just a beautiful song that can be enjoyed no matter what your relationship situation.
