I don’t know if it was a barb at you, Simon, but your extensive explanations are greatly appreciated by me. I’ve learned so very much listening and working along. Lately, I’ve paused and moved forward on puzzles and frequently see the same logic that you see when I resume watching. Your verbosity is greatly appreciated!

I'm sure it was not meant as a barb at all. I think he just wanted to make it clear that he's confident that you could do the puzzle *much* quicker if it wasn't for the extra work you do to explain your logic to the audience.

I am also confident it was meant to distinguish 'time Simon would need to solve this' vs. 'to solve this on the channel, explaining as he goes'. Those explanations are at the heart of the channel and are much-loved. I know I only turn off the sound when I play 'I'll give myself a headstart, and see how long until the master finds something I haven't seen yet', which is an occasionally enjoyable game. Keep up the verbiage!

    Q1: What is a Simarkism?
A1: A Simarkism is something that Simon and Mark typically or frequently say.
Q2: How do you do this so fast?
A2: I'm not made of flesh and blood, but of sand ...
Q3: Why don't you include 'XX' and 'YY'?
A3: Probably it's already on the list ('Scooby-Doo' for example), but not mentioned in this video. But if you think it's not, tell me what you'd like me to include and there's a good chance I'll add it!
Q4: You missed 'XX' at 'YY:ZZ'!
A4: That could very well be the case! Human speech is hard to understand for computers like me, especially British sometimes! Point out the ones that I missed and maybe I'll learn!
Q5: Could you turn these statistics into videos?
A5: I've been playing around with the idea and I'm open to input as to what people would like to see. Let me know if you are interested in this and/or have suggestions.

Hey Sand! Since you have the "get cracking" part, it would be nice if you could also catch the completion at ruclips.net/video/le1pe4WMGZY/видео.html (1:09:50) and allow some statistics for the solve time/difficulty. We need to persuade them to say a keyword then? I don't see the timer on screen, but it would be nice if the popup actually included the time instead of only saying "stopped".
Another thing possibly interesting to catch is longer segments of silence.

At 43:40, a simpler way to prove that R3C6 and R6C6 can not be blue is considering that this forces R3C5 and R6C6 to be the same digit, which breaks R4 of the puzzle, since that digit can not appear in it: in fact, R6C6 sees R4C7 by knight's move and R4C6 and R4C4 by sudoku, while R3C5 sees R4C3 by knight's move. Btw, you and Mark are doing a massive job here on Cracking the Cryptic, and i'm happy to say to you what you told Aad in the previous video: take a bow!

40:07 - ...if r4c12 are orange and r6c89 are purple, r34c8 have no color! So neither r6c4 can't be be blue! Simples! He just had to check what color could r34c8 be if that were the case, not r89c4! I'm not sure how it helps, but would at least finish that thought he had about r6c4 being blue or not and help rule it not-blue! Edit - combined with 45:44, it rules blue out of both r6c4 and r6c6!

    • @DronesClubMember13
      @DronesClubMember13 3 года назад +1

Now that I've gone over it a few times, I think I've cast aspersions on the innocent...bobbins.
After Simon proves that c5r89, c5r12 have to be a solid domino color, he goes on to fill in the numbers. He never quite turns the puzzle 90 degrees to see the rule also applies to r5c12 and r5c89. When he finds the 8 by cropkey dot (r7c7) I realized that a knight's move prevented the 8 from residing in r5c8 and thus disambiguating the colors in that domino. However, the 8 can escape to c9! He marks it but I totally missed it.
I was still with him most of the way but my leap of logic could've gotten me into trouble if the 8 had been in c9 all along and the domino blue.
      Sorry Simon.

Back in the day, prevailing wisdom was that a sudoku had to start with about 17 digits. Then CtC arrived on the scene. After some time, "a sudoku with only 4 given digits" was considered to be extraordinary, but solvable. A month ago, "a sudoku with zero given digits" was considered to be extraordinary, but solvable. Today, sudokus with zero given digits are being solved every day.
Truly, we live in remarkable times.

At 41:00, an easier way to break through is to think about column 6 in relation to column 4. We know that both blue cells in box 2 are in row 3, and both blue cells in box 5 are in row 4 (because the blue cell in the cage in box 2 can only go in box 5 in row 4, joining its partner in that row.) But because there is a kropki dot in column 6, we cannot have two blue digits in those two cells. 1-8 is not a valid combination for white or black kropki dots. Therefore, there is definitely at least one blue in column 4, and therefore the cage at the bottom of column 4 is not blue.
Still a great solve, Simon! I actually managed to beat your time today, but I think only because I don't have to stop and explain things to an audience. I love your videos!

40:17 This chain of logic actually does rule out blue being in that square. The cage in row 6 would be purple, the cage in column 2 would be green, that causes the cage in row 4 to be orange, and now the cage in column 8 is broken. So you could have ruled out that one box slightly earlier, though it wouldn't have helped you solve the puzzle any faster.

I started this video 3 days ago now. And I'm happy to be able to finish watching it now after finally solving it after 3 days of thinking over it. It's fascinating to watch how relatively easily you handled this puzzle compared to myself. I didn't use all the same logic and I had to resort to using chains, which I know you don't like, but I'm still happy that I was at least able to get through the solve.

I think I noticed an easier way to deduce, that blue can not be in c6r6 at 46:16 in the video:
    - The question I asked: Where does the blue from c5r3 go in row 4? It can't go into either box 4 or box 6, because of the knights move restraint and the other cells already being colored in. So it has to go into box 5, specifically in c4r3 or c6r3. Consequently, there are already both blues in somewhat known positions in box 5
I'm mostly still a novice in these sudokus, so if I'm correct with my deduction I'm pretty happy with it - Simons way of disproving the possibility of blue in c6r6 is kind of monstrous to me, to think through that many moves. Really fascinating
Edit: Oh. I literally wrote this comment 3 seconds too early. There's the red speech bubble explaining just that ^_^;.. But hey, I'm happy with having spotted that :)

Amazing puzzle. Here is how I did the difficult part at 46:00. If r6c6 is blue then box 6 tells us it has to be 8. Then the cage in column 2 is green, the cage in column 8 is orange, and the cage in row 4 has no fill.

Yeah - at 48:00 you can work out box5 for rows 4,6 and columns 4,6 as they pertain to the colors. For example, row 4 column 4 is a blue purple cell. But that’s only slightly easier to see than what he found. Neat setting this one.

What a wonderful puzzle and solve! You can get the blue pair locked into r4 of the central box because you can get 4 blues locked into boxes 4 and 6 r5 and r6. Now making box 8 a blue cage will force a 18 pair on the kropki. Therefore the box 8 cage is green!

What a puzzle! It took me 4 attempts to get the final digits in (knights moves can be rather misleading) but I got there in the end!!! In terms of suggestions for alternative methods in the middle part of the solve, I focused on where 8 could go in box 8. Either it had to go in cell 4 or 7 of the bottom left cage or it was forced into the 6th cell of the box. Placing 8 in either of cells 4 or 7 forces a 1 into the cage with the 8, in order to add to 9. This forces the lower cage in column 5 to be a 2,7 cage (since 1 and 8 both see that cage so are removed as possible options) and the higher cage to be the 1,8 cage. This in turn forces the colours of the cages in boxes 2 and 7 (since both 1,8 cages must be the same colour), while also placing a 1 or 8 in cell 9 of box 2. This cell sees a 2,7 pair, so 1 is quickly ruled out and the 8 has to accompany a 4. But this causes a contradiction, since the digit 1 is now ruled out of every cell in row 4 (resolving the 1,8 pair gives an 8 in cell 2 of box 5). Thus, cell 6 of box 8 has to be an 8. Many thanks to RockyRoer and to Simon for another brilliant puzzle/solve! :)

A slightly easier deduction at 46:20 is to think that if R3C6 was blue, then R4C6 HAS to be orange, as 1/8 can ONLY connect with a 2/7 (as the 9 is already taken) This orange in R4C6 runs into failures faster than the blue in R6C6

When Simon got stuck in the middle looking at the blue in the corner I was thinking about the colors of the petals. In each of the quadrants the petals had to be either the same color or different and be the same in the other quadrants. In both cases the corner of the middle box had to be the colour of one of the adjacent boxes and so that cell in the bottom right could never be blue. Of course I hadn’t realized why that not being blue was in any way important.
    Great puzzle!

At 45:00 there is - in my opinion and If I am correct - a quite elegant way to resolve it:
If r6c6 ist blue, you can go with the Dominos around the clock and will not work out.
2 Dominos bottom right have to be purple
2 Dominos top right have to be orange
    2 Dominos top left Green
    2 Dominos bottom left blue
Which does Not work, with c6r6 blue.

I solved it eventually, but I was stuck at the spot you reached at the 23:00 mark. Your epiphany at the 26:21 got me moving again, and from there I solved it without any more hints. Took me forever, but I got there. The decision you took at the one hour mark, to start marking the polarity of the color codes? I did that from almost the very beginning, but I applied it to all four colors, not just the orange. I'm not sure that helped me as much as doing a single color helped you.

  • @peaches760a

Late to the party, but MUCH earlier in the solve you can sort out that the outer pairs in row 5 and in column 5 (r1/2c5,r8/9c5, r5c1/2,r5c8/9) must all be (colored) pairs. That helps a lot.
Take Box 2 and call the r2c3/4 pair RED, the r3/4c5 pair BLUE and the r1/2c6 pair BLACK.
Using the knights constraint, it's fairly easy to see all three pair must be different (the Red and Blue cells inside the box see all the other cells.)
Note that both the cells from Blue and Red outside the box, both see the "plus" of cells inside the box, cannot be the non-paired cell in r1c4 and cannot be the black r1c6 cell. Therefore they must be in r3c4 and r3c6 in some order. We now have 2 of Red, Blue and Black inside the box, so the last two cells r1c5 and r2c5 must be the last pair. You can then apply this to the Box 4, 6 and 8 by rotational symmetry.

Someone explain the logic at 29:30. He says the cages can't be 10 because the kropki dots can't sum to 10. But that doesn't mean anything. The constraint isn't that the dots will also add to 10. The two dots together in this case would have to sum to 20 and that can be done easily with consecutive dots. If blue and orange are 20, the yellow is 5, and the 4 remaining cells need to add to 20. Blue = 28, orange = 19, dot1 = 34, dot2 = 67, yellow = 5. Now it may be the cages aren't 10, but this logic is illogical.

    • @ce7.0
      @ce7.0 4 месяца назад

At 26:22 he deduced that the uncaged dominoes in column 5 can't mix and match purple and green digits, because that would break the ambiguous cages in boxes 2 and 8. One domino must be both greens and the other must be both purples, so both green and purple have to be compatible with kropki dots.
