- Author Rebecca Skloot and Harvard Law School Professor Glenn Cohen discuss the story of Henrietta Lacks, a woman who died from cervical cancer in the early 1950s. During the course of her treatment, Henrietta's tissue samples were taken and then cultivated in a laboratory. For the first time, scientists cultivated an immortal human cell line which dramatically changed science and medicine forever.

So sad the family suffered from generational deprivation [and abuse]. Reparations Now.👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽
I just can't believe this amazing woman wasn't one of the focus on Black History Month, I will definitely will bring it up this week at school. God bless her.
What are you talking about. She didn’t know they even took her cells. And they didn’t compensate the family.
Because then Black women would know they all have these cells
LACKS FAMILY better get a 100 Billion dollar check now and they should not have to 1year to get it
I just now realized this historical information
I would like an answer to how the cells taken out did not keep any cancer, since I’d like clarification if the doctor took cells from her cancer site or elsewhere in her body.
The Henrietta Lacks story became a bio ethical issue due to non - consent for treatment ; Ms. Lacks was to have a cist removed , and the surgeons decided to abstract some of her tissues . I do not know their thought processes but do know they were not practicing informed consent as it relates to Black people . John's Hopkins hospital is where Dr. Vivian Thomas, a black man who developed surgical procedure for the condition known as "blue babies", along with Dr. Alfred Blaylock during the second World War . We need reparations !
Am I the only one who finds it annoying how patronizing she comes off when describing her husband and kids? I also think it’s unethical that they didn’t compensate the family in any way.
In both the 1950s and 1970s the laws were horrible. Now things are changing for the better. This author set up a foundation so that all the profits from her book went to scholarships for the family per Henrietta's daughter's wishes. 55 plus scholarships have been ulilized per family input. The author worked on the book for10 years and during that time was the first person to really talk to the family. The family has spoken in public a lot about their history and issues and the author is reflecting their issues with lack of education, and not having advocate help from anyone. In 2017 the medical pharmaceutical companies were sued. Oprah made a TV movie on the book as well. The grand daughter-in law and great grand daughter, a nurse, have been on discussion panels with scientists and the author, which are interesting to view. There is a plan to build a medical building in Henrietta's name. The surviving 3 children in their 70s and 80s have health issues /care that need addressing. You can get the book and contact the foundation if you want.
YEAH WITH THE WHOLE NO BODY REALLY KNEW HOW TO EXPLAIN STUFF TO THE FAMILY. THEY KNEW HOW THEY JUST DIDNT WANT TO SHARE THIS BREAK THROUGH WITH THIS FAMILY.
I could throw up from the sneaky evil conniving ways of this country my God how did they not think to compensate the family back then
Read this great book last year and clearly Rebecca Skloot wrote a very fine book regarding the story of Herrietta and the history of HeLa cells. Bioethics really did not exist and it was common for doctors and researchers to take and share cell samples without permission. But after WWII and the horrible medical experiments on humans done to prisoners lead to the creation of Informed Consent into practice and into the law. The family clearly deserves their day in court .
I am 70 years young and I just read the book.
