I have never been so moved by a performance live or recorded. She is hands down for me, my favorite pianist. I love her. She is a brilliant, wonderful human being.
Nikolayeva is still far too little known. She is one of these fabulous Soviet era pianists who were hardly known in the west - along with Sofronitsky, Yudina, Grinberg, and many others - but who would undoubtedly have been global superstars had they been allowed to travel abroad. In the west one knew only Richter and Gileles, but they were just the tip of the iceberg. And when the iron curtain finally opened, Nikolayeva tragically did not live much longer. Nikolayeva is for me as one of the greatest Bach pianists of all time, and of course the Shostakovich 24 Preludes and Fugues are basically synonymous with her (as the Grandados Goyescas are synonymous with Alicia de Laroccha). But she could play everything supremely well, as this recording shows.
I absolutely agree. Nikolayeva is one of the most intelligent and interesting musicians on record. unfortunately, now she is almost forgotten, while superficial and mediocre "pianists" are well known...
In her 60s but with the energy of someone half her age, hands like a tractor driver but with the precision of a surgeon, and such passion and feeling for the music - she was phenomenal
Well, I think LangLang could learn something from her - it is not always speed which makes a brilliant pianist - it is the heart and soul (besides the technique) - and she combines both. Wonderful interpretation, I love it!!
I agree with you concerning speed, especially in this concerto. But to be fair, Lang Lang in his official DG recording with Baremboim and the Chicago SO is not so fast with a duration of 38:38.
music every note is music - her sonorities are scintillating - there are just soooo many performances of this concerto - but surely this is the one that is by far the most musical
It's not an ordinary play, we are talking about Tchaikovsky's piano concerto n. 1! For me, it was very well performed, and the piano player gave her soul through the piano keys.
This is a very refreshing interpretation. I like the slower tempo. Far too many play at breakneck speed (Martha are you reading this?) I savored the concert. Thank you dear lady
Some discussion here about tempo. In my experience it’s much more difficult to play restrained than wildly. The audience hears every note so complete command of the notes is essential. As we hear in this performance a restrained tempo allows for musicality to flourish, phrasing, shading, CONTROL. And this lady has it in spades. I had not heard of her before finding her here on RUclips. A long time personal friend of Shostakovich playing Tchaikovsky. It doesn’t get more Russian than this folks.
Russisches Gewichtsspiel in Reinform.
I do prefer this concerto played broad and lyrical like here, rather than fast and furious "à la Horowitz". I just regret that Nikolayeva's octaves at 10:00 to 10:15 are so ponderous (listen to comparatively broad performances like Richter/Karajan or Argerich/Dutoit, both on DG, for a more powerful climax) .
...besseres Bild: Im Fallen fliegt man!

Ginzburg*
And Yakov Flier.... his Schumann Fantasie in C Op. 17 is a work of art.
I agree, we know far too little about this wonderful pianist! Music is timeless 💞
Amen to all of this. I could not have said it better.
In her 60s but with the energy of someone half her age, hands like a tractor driver but with the precision of a surgeon, and such passion and feeling for the music - she was phenomenal
I wish i had grandma like this 😍😍😍
After listening to her play this numerous times I do believe she may have been the finest pianist overall that ever lived!
Well, I think LangLang could learn something from her - it is not always speed which makes a brilliant pianist - it is the heart and soul (besides the technique) - and she combines both. Wonderful interpretation, I love it!!

Lang Lang has a lot to learn from many people. He can teach masterclasses in overacting though. Oscar worthy BS
Exactly.... fast-faster-LANG LANG...
NICOLAJEVA is a genius musician,
LANG LANG is a music-clown....
NICOLAJEVA is a giant, LANG LANG is a dwarf without natural musicality....
a true legend!!! I love her. Pitty I am too young and didn´t have the chance to see her alive.

A really great musician. Also, she had iron on her fingers and was technically superb.
Que mulher maravilhosa 🌷 que Deus a tenha no Paraíso do Senhor 🙏
as if you hear this music for the first time ,this lady is nothing but fire an soul and music,music,music.....
Bravo,Bravissimo,Magichna Tatiana !
It's not an ordinary play, we are talking about Tchaikovsky's piano concerto n. 1! For me, it was very well performed, and the piano player gave her soul through the piano keys.
She premiered many of Shostakovich's piano works as many of them were dedicated to her.
She was the teacher of the great pianist Nikolay Luganski. She was a very passionate pianist!
she was not just "very passionate" but her musical abilities were on a level Lugansky will never reach...
I ADORE this woman...
Geisterschiff me too
Sempre me emociono vendo e ouvindo Tatiana Nikolaeyva
Aside from her magnificent playing and interpretation she syncs with the orchestra like a great lover! Kurt Mazur leads a wonderful orchestra as well!
This is a very refreshing interpretation. I like the slower tempo. Far too many play at breakneck speed (Martha are you reading this?) I savored the concert. Thank you dear lady
Russian soul, heart and warmth. Unrivalled anywhere else.
thank you for this wonderful post. i have previously only heard her in Shostakovich so deeply appreciated.
Stunning. Nobody comes close. Classic realism
Bravo, bravisimo.
La Leggenda! Che splendore! Come fare a non amarla?!
Wow, sehr schön und emotional gespielt!
Bravo!!
Bellissimo! Grazie!

Grandiosa
¡Que regalo de Dios! ¡Bárbara interpretación de la maestra Nikolayeva! Aplausos de pie :D.
Spirit of Russia.... WONDERFUL!
Tchaikovsky secondo Tchaikovsky = Perfetta!
What integrity!
gran maestra¡¡¡
A MUSICAL GODDESS:
SUPREME!
Gosh, she has very powerful fingers. Didn't know she can play like a Goliath.
Espetacular!
EXELEMTE .

I brividi, come sempre..
Que linda Maestra.
Rainha maravilhosa 😍😍😍
Maravillosa
BRAVISSIMA
Even Yefim Bronfman does not begin to compare to Nikalayeva's rhythmic and dynamic playing and interpretation!
besser kann man es kaum formulieren!
nothing to add ... georgeous!
(knows anybody, if this recording is available on DVD in better sound quality?)
kai nehmitz d
Best of all Tchaikovsky concerti
❤❤❤
wow. grandma plays well
wunderbar ,was Sie hier sagen!!
Wonderful.
Is she wearing nail polish?
Great pipe organ.
As Pau Casals to the cello, so Mme Nicolaeva to the piano in their respective eras.

🏃♀️❤🖤❤Natalia Tarnowvsky
kleine Hände, großes Spielen
It would be great if you could upload the whole thing, not 4 separate segments, the 2nd of which has no audio. Thanks.
Y por que toyu ?
...besseres Bild: Im Fallen fliegt man!
What year was this please?
1990
Iron fingers and a velvet touch...listen to her play Bach!
The most powerful piano concerto ever written, destroying Mozart, Beethoven and even Chopin.
Seriously? Apples and oranges.
Are you a child making childish comments?
And he didn't think his work was very good!
4:41 Donald Trump!
🤔

Lots of wrong notes, but even more heart. The muddy piano and the recording didn't help this artist.
