It has been proved that she was indeed a spy, but at a very low level. We should not be carried away because in a way we like her. Because of spies, many brave soldiers lost their lives. They should be mourned, not the spy. Same thing is valid today.

Fairly close to the truth. By the way, the evidence against her was rather flimsy. It was war time and no mercy in those days. One French soldier fainted before firing his weapon. She was a low level spy for the French and Germans, but she was betrayed by both. The French Officials that accused her were eventually arrested themselves for espionage.
I thought she did refuse. I read it too in a novel entitled Mata Hari(written by remy Silado), but maybe this film wanted to make more dramatic, so they tied her.

Firing squads are a strange method of execution. The prisoner is shot multiple times but still needs a mercy shot at the end. It would make more sense just to have one head shot at point blank range, just as they do in China.

Ironically, she was executed by the only country she spied for, France. She did take money from German agents, but there is no proof she ever provided them with any information. The French had to explain their huge casualty figures somehow, plus she was considered an outcast in polite society. Blaming her killed two birds with one stone.
Killing for gains or vengeance and ordering capital punishment to the culprits, against the lifetime as fixed by the Almighty, carries the same impact as the former doing killing for gains or vengeance and latter ordering capital punishment by means of Earthians made law. Well that was bad cinematography to make her fall to the ground after the shots are fired... She was tied to the tree... The ropes didn't magically loosen because of some shots to her chest.
I think they do that after they check the pulse just to make sure the condemed is actually dead. And they give the finale blow if they are still considerd alive.

Prosecutor Mornet, who worked for Petain in 1939 and then prosecuted Petain in 1946 (!), said about her case: "There was nothing there!"

Where can I get this film???
Can you imagine this indescribable dread to stay face to face in front of firing squad a know you are actually dead yet?
At least she got a trial. Most double agents in a high casualty war were foun floating in the river.

A very brave woman, but she knew the consequences and died very bravely.
Couldn't they just give her a light spanking and let bygones be bygones 🤷♂️
The evidence against her was very weak. She was a scapegoat.
she refused to be tied to the pole

I read somewhere that She was only hit by one bullet. The rest of the squad deliberatly missed .
she died with dignity and pride, a true scorpion, i admire her for that
They then shipped the body to a medical school to be dissected. Parts of her were kept in jars for years. Most parts disappeared.
Course it's necessary, its called a " mercy shot "....
It ends any potential suffering which may be experienced at the moments before death !!

Though I don't believe she should have been executed; it she was going to be executed she probably should have been crucified (more dramatic).
