Black Mesa really is special. I hiked to the monument at the top of Black Mesa in the OK Panhandle on August 30, 1997, the day before Princess Diana died. The cap of the mesa is the remains of an ancient lava flow from the west that prevented the erosion of the softer soils beneath. The Cimarron River winds below the mesa. Fossils are plentiful in the walls of canyons below the mesa, and the native flora and wildlife on the mesa reach their eastern- and western-most ranges there. The top of Black Mesa that day was like a rock garden of rounded boulders with mounds of wild purple verbenas and yellow daisies growing between the boulders. I had the mesa to myself, looking far into the distance over the surrounding states. An enormous storm was sweeping down from Colorado, and I had to hurry off the mesa because of the lightning. I had asked a couple in Kenton, earlier, for directions to the mesa, and, when I returned to my vehicle, they had left a note on my window inviting me for supper! They lived on a ranch in a box canyon and showed me the fossils eroding out of the canyon walls. A wonderful memory!

Nice! I just finished a 9 day road trip, relocating an RV from Chicago to Salt Lake City. We saw the CO/NE/KS tripoint marker, then went to CO to see RMNP. Hiked near Breckenridge, drove 70 thru Colorado, saw Colorado National Monument. Then went to Arches and Canyonlands, down to Monument Valley, Horseshoe Bend, the GC North Rim, Bryce and Zion. Gas in an RV was pricey at 9mpg, but we had a $150 credit from the company. So 9+ days in an RV cost us about $750 total. We did KOA a couple nights, but boondocked the rest of the time. Nothing like spending about $700 per person for a nearly 10 day trip...

I'm an Arkansan. I don't usually see/hear much about Arkansas so I had to check this out. I guess there's not really a lot here unless you know where to look - and it's mostly natural beauty. And a lot of it is centered very close to where I live - only about 30 minutes from either Lake Dardanelle or Richland (what we call "Falling Water") or Haw Creek Falls, etc. Lots of extremely scenic trails, bluffs, creeks/waterfalls/swimming holes, parks, etc. I agree on Little Rock though - not a lot there minus there by the river. I don't go to Fayetteville much but I think that's quickly becoming Arkansas's shining city. I mean, I'm from a town of 500, so Little Rock kind of seems gargantuan, but I have traveled a lot and have seen much bigger and more interesting cities - especially out west. The biggest credit I have to give to Little Rock is that's where I saw Bob Dylan lol... And Lynyrd Skynyrd - or what's left of them. And as a side note, I got an IT degree 6 years ago now but I'm too hard-headed to move. I figure I could get a decent job in Fayetteville but I refuse to move. I'd rather be a highly educated logger or restaurant worker than to move from my home.

I was raised just a few miles northeast of the Richland area. Just outside of the Buffalo National River. You have it nailed pretty well in saying the charm of Arkansas is in the things in nature you can do. We have been doing the waterfall gambits this last year.
Been on the trail rides to Falling water many a time. Swam Richland creek many a time very cold water with a lot of cottonmouths on the banks, but not so much in the water. My great great Uncle was killed at the skirmish near the mouth of Richland creek in May 1864. He and my other uncle trained their own militia, and joined the Arkansas 1st Union Calvary.
As a matter of fact someone posts skeletons in different poses along the highway, and they are the source of my avatar photo ( someone has an odd sense of humor) here just up the mountains from Falling Water and headwaters of the Richland.

Later on, on the way home, I ended up in a tiny town in SD, where I was introduced to their own cuisine, which includes what I had--beef steaktips chislic. That was exceptional! I´m from Atlanta and lived in Houston for a while so I would try to alternate the highways and roads between the two as much as possible but overall, I would recommend someone taking the southernmost route via I-10 from Mobile simply because western TN and most of AR are just mediocre minus the BBQ. Also, I've always wanted to drive the OK Panhandle in its entirety. I once went through the thickest fog I've even seen in my life in a town called Texline... you probably went through the area if you drove by Clayton, NM on your way to Las Vegas.

Next time you find yourself in Arkansas, try Hot Springs or Conway. Hot Springs has a lot of history (museums), very pretty lakes, and a quite nice historic district.
Conway is another college town, much smaller than Fayetteville, but is also full of history. It's harder to find things to do in Conway if you don't know where to look, though.
Whatever you do, avoid Pine Bluff, Sherridan, and Harrison at all costs.

Hi Kyle, Have you ever thought about inviting all of your followers on one of your road trips? I wish you would...we could make it a Geography Lovers Convoy. Did you hike to the top of Black Mesa in OK? I did in 2003. I'm with you...I also love Las Vegas NM...toured that town in 2008 during my move from Hacienda Heights CA to Pueblo CO. While you were in Las Vegas did you take a dip in Montezuma Hot Springs and check out their original Carnegie Library? Did you summit Hermit Peak also? The view from the summit is Top Gun. Did you tour Santa Fe's San Miguel Chapel? Hearing the absolute stillness inside that chapel is one of my favorite spiritual experiences.

I've always wondered about the Oklahoma panhandle. Doesn't look like you gave me a reason to sell that drive to my husband, though. Rather take the trip from Taos to Cimarron, which I've done but he hasn't.

The panhandle is an interesting drive but I couldn't recommend it to most people. Really only if you've been through Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle many times but haven't seen the Oklahoma panhandle.

Just a quick unrelated comment: living in Rochester, NY, we have two things that are kind of geographic "oddities". First is that we have a few waterfalls in our city; the largest is High Falls at 96' (29m) ... I don't know how many cities have waterfalls that high, and it's not inconsequentially small compared to Niagara Falls at 167' (51m). Second, is that waterfall is part of the Genesee River which flows north; as I understand it, very few rivers flow north-especially predominantly due-north like the Genesee which flows from just over the Pennsylvania border to Lake Ontario.

Oh and turnabout is fair play, I took a tour a Tennessee and was excited cuz you hyped up Chattanooga so much, but what the hell! That place sucks! Or at least I need a tour guide because I drove through all of the rough areas. I found it really unpleasant to get around especially compared to Knoxville.

I actually work in the East Village in Little Rock. I wouldn't call it forced or even call it gentrification. I don't call it gentrification because no residential buildings that I know of are being changed, and it's mostly old industrial buildings that are being converted into shops and lofts. I wouldn't call it forced either, but more of a slow process that was overestimated in rapidity by the city.

I was stationed out of Las Vegas, NM for the summer if '91. There was a big wall painting of a cowgirl that said "Calumet says Howdy!" Left over from when they filmed Red Dawn in town. I thought it was funny because Calumet is a fictional town. I wonder if that mural is still there? Nobody remembers the movie, I bet. Rather dated premise.
