I like how instead of making conventional, body-horror monsters like games like dead space, signalis, or others, it instead *dehumanizes* the enemy, it makes them seem like a monster while they're just the same as you; a soldier fighting in the war
If there's one thing I love in this game above all others, is its depiction of how there's different kinds of soldiers in war: Ranging from the scaredy cowardly wimp (the privates with shovels), going through the one that is just trying to do his job and stay alive long enough to go back home (the standard riflemen, with their laidback idle stance), the foolhardy and overzealously patriotic one (trench raiders and ax wielding knights), the bloodthirsty homicidal psychopath (gasmasked riflemen, elite trench raiders), and culminating with the genocidal war criminal (flammenwerfer units). Which is exactly how this game treats its enemy variety. And it's pure undistilled genius.
Funnily enough at 7:35 the other German Soldier says: "Er hat meinen Kameraden getötet" which translates to "He killed my Comrade" while the Guy groans on the ground. Neat Detail.
Now I want a sequel where both armies accidentally unleash an eldritch abomination and so the survivors of both sides have to band together and try to escape.
I prefer the Silent Hill approach of not limiting inventory. I tjust adds unnecessary back tracking where it doesn't need to be there. I don't mind seeing a locked door and having to come back to i tlater, but getting somewhere and realizing I need to walk back to pick up an item I didn't bring is annoying.
It depends. Quest items? No problem if they don't take up inventory space. Combat items? Alot of tension is lost if you have a giant supply of them available at any time
@@famulanrevengeance3044 That's an easy solution though. Just don't put a shit ton of ammo everywhere? The developer can easily control how many items the player can have access to.
@@Cr3zant I'd much rather have limited inventory spaces than less overall ammo in circulation. There's no worse feeling than fighting a boss to realize you literally don't have enough ammo to finish it (thankfully most boss arenas have ammo or scale their health down). Backtracking is at worst a frustrating nuisance; if you use up all the ammo the game has, you could be losing hours of progress.
@@Cr3zant People are gonna miss ammo, people are gonna make mistakes, so you need some abundance of items. Also so people don't softlock themselves or are unable to interact with the mechanics of the game. The Bunker gives you alot of items, you just have to find them, which can be hard in the dark with all the obstacles and limited fuel. Better for there to be extra items for people that need them, or to reward thorough players instead of punishing them for looking hard by giving them nothing. You could do adaptive difficulty with items, but if you figure out it exists, immediately the whole game feels like nothing you do matters because the game will shower you in items if you need them.
I have nothing to add just wanted to say this is a great thread. Prefer unlimited to limited inventory, but if important items could be unlimited and weapons and ammo limited before and after boss fights or would cause lower health or something if you’re carrying too much it would be awesome/neat to see implemented
While Conscript is absolutely a Survival Horror game -- I always tell people that it is it's own thing in that regard, and very different from what Survival Horror many know and love. Do not go into it expected Resident Evil, Darkwood, Amnesia, Fear And Hunger, Dead Space or the likes of such. Survival Horror to me, is all about that feeling of constant unease, discomfort and uncertainty. "What the hell is around the corner? What was that weird sound? What happened here? What caused this? Am I being followed? Am I safe here? Should I have bought that shotgun with me, despite only having 2 shells left? Please tell me there's a safe room/save spot up ahead"... That sort of tension and feeling. Conscript does manage to give you bits of that -- but not in the sense I think many expect when they jump into it. I absolutely recommend it. It's a brilliant game and it certainly does not pull punches on some things. I'd just say to avoid hopping in with the mindset/expectation of monsters, viruses, ancient powers and stuff like that. It's you and the enemy soldiers. That's it. But it still works well.
it does still have a lot of "traditional" horror elements, i have to admit i was scared shitless in parts like underneath fort souville and the town sewers and a lot of it is thanks to the amazing atmosphere and audio design, hearing the gas mask muffled breathing of a trench raider in complete darkness followed by almost inhumanly fast footsteps fading into the distance and back in from another direction was genuinely horrifying despite them being common enemies and most of all - not even monsters or supernatural beings, just. human. soldiers.
How is that a "huh" moment? Are you so desensitized to war by call of duty or whatever the fuck that you think war is all about niki minaj twerking with Ghost or some shit? Fucking child

Absolutely infuriating at times. Other than that the game is brilliant Start to finish
I was unsure when i saw this before, but I appreciate your review of it and tempts me to pick it up almost indefinitely. I don't know I just like game systems with upgrades and such because I like the feeling of progression?
Good video, I like this game, it's nearly a masterpiece, however, some aspects of it seem off; first of all the rats, I hate the fact that the protagonist their only target yet you can go around this point by leaving unworthy enemies (enemies without rewards when they're killed), using grenades (yes even in later levels there are rat holes you can throw grenades in) or burning bodies; second, the selling prices are way lower the purchase ones, this is so annoying because if I want to sell something I accidentally purchased I am going to lose my money (cigarettes); next, the used weapon parts to upgrade a weapon are gone, you can just restore them after selling the weapon and the seller doesn't have too much weapon parts so you should play with a trial and error method; and finally, the endings, let's just say, they're not what I was waiting for such a great game
Bought it after watching this. I'm really liking it but getting stuck quite a bit. Can't use certain items, tons of locked doors, not sure where to go 😢
I was looking forward to this game, good to hear its good. Would you say its closer to RE4 or RE1? As in, are you incentivized to generally kill all the enemies, or are you supposed to run past a lot of them?
