I've been very curious about the Harding paints. They haven't been available in the U.S., though perhaps they are now. Must check!

Hi Lily, Thank you for swatching three Michael Harding watercolours. I recently bought a Michael Harding Introductory set of four colours; Yellow Benzimidazolone PY 151; Aqua Green PG7, PB15.3, Scarlet Lake PR170 and Vivid blue PW4, PW6 & PB15.3, PG7. I think the texture of these paints, even the opaque and thick Vivid Blue is lovely to work with. The vivid Blue is more like the cerulean in hue. My first impresion is that they will mix well with my existing paints which are mainly Winsor and Newton and Daley Rowney.. At the same time I purchased some deliciously creamy Rembrant paints, mainly because Rembrant and Micheal Harding (both previously unknown to me) were the only two suppliers where I could sourse Aureolin at the time. There seem to be some shortages with art materials at present. I am inclined to reorder from M H when my existing paints are used up. I would appreciate it if you would video any future painting with MH paints as they are so new to the market and there are so few current videos. Thank you again,

Wow! The PR149 is very different to the Van Gogh PR149. The van Gogh becomes rather full and brownish when it dries. Thanks for sharing this.

Yes!! I was blown away by how different it was from any other perylene red I'd ever tried before too!

About your search for a true aubergine color - the only one I know of thus far is Daniel Smith's Bloodstone Genuine from the Prima Tek line; its quite strong as a "colored black", and has a bunch of granulation. So it leans more black as a result, but next to any other black or black toned deep colors the aubergine jumps out. If you can find a comparable purple/violet for the color toned quality of the bloodstone (the color minus the black, basically), I would advise mixing that with Bloodstone Genuine so you can have a range of aubergine color intensities to highlight/contrast the dark black aspect of it with. Otherwise, DS's Bloodstone genuine alone is a like a black watercolor version of the water soluble graphite paints & pencils, in purple (if that makes sense).

Thank you so much for telling me about the properties, I don't think I have had the Bloodstone watercolor! After your suggestions I am absolutely intrigued, thank you so much for taking the time to write such a detailed and informative assessment of the color! ❤️🙌😊
