There's a few reasons It reads more like an awkwardly worded love letter to the first game than a true entry that can stand-alone, but it retcons so much that it can't even be that. The retcon itself might be an awkward homage to the retcon in Curse of Monkey Island, which itself was.. awkward. That said there are things I like about it, it's one of the rare times we get to see these characters and locations in 3D, and I do enjoy the commentaries on consumerism and gentrification.
This is the only version I can't play (due to its inaccessibility), but doesn't look like I missed much any way. I love the other ones completely, though.
The biggest problem with this game where the controls (using a stick to turn around and having to point the character toward the thing you want to interact with instead of using a mouse pointer) and it was 3D before 3D was ready, if you look at Monkey Island 3 its look was perfect for the genre. while this just jumped on the 3D bandwagon
Which is odd considering this was a PS2 title, not a PSX game. Super Mario 64 and Resident Evil had already created the standards for 3D Movement.... and Lucas Arts already had experience with Grim Fandago which was a couple of years before this.
@Palmerifics Well to be more specific, the moment Herman Toothrot supposedly got all his memories back was when MI4 became the Ultimate Insult. There's just no way he could ever be Captain Marley. The two of them had completely different backstories in the previous games. Trying to merge the two into one character makes absolutely no sense. To me, Herman Toothrot is still a crazy hermit, and Captain Marley is still dead.
Is it me or have I just notice a few similarities with Gravity Falls? Stan, the con sales man, Herman's lost memories and McGucket's hermit and looney behaviour, the villain is a demon.... Oh, sh*! I really hope Hirsch is a big fan of this game and he probably is!
they replaced the cartooney appeal with 3d ugly. It seems harder to animate silly events, such as guybrush stuffing three bags of booty and a treasure chest into his pants. In the third installment, he would open a pocket and stuff it in while his pantaloons got bigger until finally the items settled and he looked normal. However, in the 3d ugly, he awkwardly picks up objects and holds them near his pants until the function told it to disappear. not conducive the visual art style of MI3
I liked the graphics, the story was great, I found the movement controls annoying and temperamental are times, and Monkey Kombat was rubbish compared to Monkey Island 1 Insult Swordfighting. Overall, I liked this game a lot.
@BigHairyMarty314 Oh, come on. Marley went crazy. Maybe this is not the best plot twist but it is acceptable. ANd without that twist MI4 would be just another "Collect that items before bad guys" story. ANd yet - it is quite nice ending to that whole Big Whoop story.
i wonder why the hippy judge and the other judge have an attitude that encourages guybrush to beat depollo in plankdiving . i mean don't they get a steady income because of depollo? if guybrush wins then the judges won't have income from judging plankdiving anymore??
seriously, look at the third game and then at this... i loved the whole series but why fix things that arent broken? monkey island and broken sword changing the look and gamneplay of the games was part of the genre's death...
3D was becoming more of thing when this came out. Obviously they thought they needed to bring it in with the times otherwise it would be criticised as living in the past with its "old" graphics. Funny thing is, after the 3d adventure games that we got didn't do so well, people generally preferred the 2D art style. I'd have to agree, there's nothing better than fine hand drawn 2D art to do your adventuring in. Still, at least they tried to modernise the genre.
I didn't understand the hate for this one until the random ass monkey robot and then the massive plot hole from the fourth to the fifth game... Jeez. What a disappointment.
Watching this longplay, I didn't see why this game was considered the bastard child of the series. It just seemed ho-hum. And then I saw the giant goddamn robot monkey. Easily the worst ending in the series in my view. Yep, worse than the ending of LeChuck's Revenge. Sure, that garbage ending was already the stuff of fucking legend, but you know what? I'm gonna cut the first sequel in a budding franchise a little slack in comparison to the fourth game in the series.

I can't stop wishing that the figurehead would for some reason yell: "THAT'S MY PURSE! I DON'T KNOW YOU!"
This was my first monkey island game and I never understood why this game receives so much hate
There's a few reasons

Stan sounds like Jim Carey, and the Coffee guy sounds like a teenage Mick Foley/Mankind. Pure chuckles.
Oh my god...the Transmogrification School scene... I haven't laughed so hard in my life.
That and the chess players were always my favorite parts whenever i play this game.
lol Ozzie had a Marvin the Martian moment XD
Ok I'm doing something wrong around 1:18:00 i can't get the option to use the dolls on the rock for some reason...
Epic ending! Great game! Can't believe I've never heard of this Monkey Island title before
This is the only version I can't play (due to its inaccessibility), but doesn't look like I missed much any way. I love the other ones completely, though.

2:31:40 "Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go!"
the robot is the secret ???
yes :3
Riding a mechanical manatee would be neat.
The one dislike was LeChuck.
1:23:40
LeChuck: MWAHAHAHAHA
Kangoo: MWAHAHAHAHAHHA
Guybrush: MWAHAHA..HAHA..HA...HA?
Technically there is no such thing as an 'innocent pirate' by definition.
the coffe clerks sounds like the awkward teen guy on the simpsons lol he always had different jobs kinda a nerd

To me, Herman Toothrot is still a crazy hermit, and Captain Marley is still dead.
Or I guess Herman still existed, and he muddled up their own life stories?
Kind of a bad decision on the developers to make this game have 3D graphics. Curse of Monkey island is older than this and it looks MILES better.
Is it me or have I just notice a few similarities with Gravity Falls? Stan, the con sales man, Herman's lost memories and McGucket's hermit and looney behaviour, the villain is a demon.... Oh, sh*! I really hope Hirsch is a big fan of this game and he probably is!
I love how Guybrush cheats every time he needs to win a competition. :)
Like any true pirate would. 😁
ooooh my sweat is vaporizin' as the temperature is risin' and i cant-a feel my legs below my knees anymore :D
I'm not sure if they were trying to make fun of Starbucks being a horrible monopolic business or not.
what longplay channel is the best then?
Dunno why but I seem to enjoy the 90s game. Looked aesthetically more pleasing. Plus the voice acting was better in it.
Your not wrong, the recasting of Marley really didn’t work
Great Video, and great game!!

A lava flume ride? I'm gonna suggest this one XD
Wish they would bring all these games on the PC & mac!!!
First time i saw the ending. More impressed that someone stuck with it and finished the game. Didn't really retain the charm of the first two games.
which one is the first?
I always drew a grid for Monkey Kombat
is the ship the same voice of bobby hill from king of the hill wow
where's the kaboom? There was suppose to be a Carribean- shattering kkaboom. where have y'all heard that linne before?
I don't get why zombie LeChuck hsa such a short beard. He clearly has a long beard in the second game.
I liked the graphics, the story was great, I found the movement controls annoying and temperamental are times, and Monkey Kombat was rubbish compared to Monkey Island 1 Insult Swordfighting. Overall, I liked this game a lot.
+MattySadler
Or the thirds rhyming insults ,that one is great.
Thanks for posting played this when i was 10 n never got past sword insulting fight now ill know how :) if i managed t gt ut again

7:39 is what you came to see
Also the last word of the game was Jar jar? T^T
''Not so subtle foreshadowing'' ding!
Why do the videos keep going blurred. Grrrr!! I would so love to go to a monkey island Restaurant and meet monkey island fans.. Yes please...
i wonder why the hippy judge and the other judge have an attitude that encourages guybrush to beat depollo in plankdiving . i mean don't they get a steady income because of depollo? if guybrush wins then the judges won't have income from judging plankdiving anymore??
Marvin? i spell his name right?
that figure head has the voice of bobbie from king of the hill
36:24 Treasure!
Man is this game get weird in the later chapters.
this should never have existed.. Clunky horrible graphics and control, the whole plot, the voicea acting, the stories in between.. just pure tripe
7:47 Murray!
8:30 - didn't Murray come BACK with Guybrush to see his wedding to Elaine, last game? He wasn't left on a shelf...
ya i agree
they found the same voice actors for Carla and Otis but not Elaine and Stan? come on... ugh. so disappointing
I disagree, this is my favourite Stan. I really like this Elaine too.
Make it so? XD He's not bald enough to make that work.
GANGNAM STYLE BEFORE IT WAS COOL 1:23:50
38:57
THAT IS NOT STAN!!!
seriously, look at the third game and then at this... i loved the whole series but why fix things that arent broken? monkey island and broken sword changing the look and gamneplay of the games was part of the genre's death...

@ANTIcoFilms And why not because he got a tan and bleached his hair? XD
they mutilated stan in this one
@jhjkoLastWIsh18

playing the robot monkey as a kid was awesome. back then I memorized every reply to every insult in the game
Looks terrible. Weak graphics even for the time.
