NETFLIX's "The King" vs The True Story of King Henry V | Flick Connection

- "The King" (2019) is a Netflix Original movie about King Henry V, but it has a lot more in common with Shakespeare's Henry V than the actual historical accounts of King Henry. So, I explain the differences between the real history and what is seen in the movie including how Henry became King despite the fact that he was far removed form the throne at birth.
King Henry V would go on to be remembered as one of the great Kings of England and "The King" does a great job of bridging the gap between the Shakespeare play and the true story of King Henry V.

I'm your host, Darren Van Damme!
Tired of looking for good movies to watch on Netflix, Amazon Prime or other streaming services? Every week I recommend a handful of the best movies on Netflix, Amazon, HBO etc. so my subscribers never run out of good movies to watch on streaming. Spending 10 minutes watching one of my videos could save you hours of searching, hours that you could otherwise spend watching good movies on streaming that you otherwise might not have ever watched or even known about.
Thanks for watching!
Just watched the movie.. man that was a great film I thought.. one of net flix's best in my opinion.
It deserved some serious awards))(
Fuck this movie. It’s literally French bashing and absolutely not true
It's pretty damn great'there wasn't a whole lot of flashy sword play, makes sense though u wouldn't be making unnecessary movements in a life or death situation.
Excellent, well said on the real story... !
The title of the video is misleading. What were the differences? You soecified very few. How about the history of Henry's brother Thomas and how he was used as a plot device inaccurately. How about the fact that the Dauphin didn't even fight at Agincourt? How about the battle inaccuracies of Agincourt, such as the missing stakes in front of the longbowman? There are so many others. Specifics would have been nicer than a very muddied down version of Henry's life.
Contrary to your claim of having a short reign, Bolingbroke was King of England from 1399 to 1413. I guess you missed the fact that you correctly spoke of Henry V being 13 years old when his father became King and then correctly stated again of his age (27) when he became 'Henry V'. But considering you got the rest right, we'll chalk this up as me being 'too picky'. :)
I cut a segment about the character William for time. He was the advisor who SPOILER ALERT! manipulated Henry into attacking France. This is not a real life character but might be loosely based on a Judge named William who arrested Henry before he became King. He was later "fired" after Henry was coronated. I loved the character in the film but he's so far removed from historical fact his inclusion didn't fit in the final edit of this video.
Yep...so true
You make it sound so interesting that I feel I must now watch the movie! lol
They should have include this and it will be more interesting. I've also read that King Henry knew about the French attacking strategy from one of the French Soldiers he caught before the war..
Yes I was about to asked you about that, and if there's an assassin who is sent by France to assassinate king Henry.
Literally fired
More of a history lesson than review, you'd make a good teacher man
I'll watch anything you take the time and make the effort to make ! Thanks for all you do and thanks to the people that support this channel !!!
Awesome little history lesson on the movie! Great movie. You would def do more like this!! Thanks again Darren!
to think the 90 percent of the internet might be in french and not english if they ever took over england in an alternate reality is kinda nuts
That was really informative and interesting. Makes me want to watch this movie now
French army was not even double the size of the english army, +40% at best. it's a good propaganda movie, rewriting history including some Frenchbashing
So not unlike Braveheart then, except that's even less accurate.
Well the French numbered around 25k including armed servants altogether according to sources, whereas the English were a weary battered 6-8k so more outnumbered like 3 or 4 to 1. And the movie is based on Shakespeares writings but its a pretty staggering defeat of the enemy which actually happened.
It's a shame he had such a short life but I guess he made it count. That's how they rolled back then.
Yes - this is a good "movie" but ... very lacking historically. So, it's kind of like Enemy At The Gates which - is a really good movie ... but ... not that historically accurate either.
Henry The Fifth
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_V_of_England
The major flaw here - is that the people making the movie do like Hollywood often does and created their stereotypical Hollywood Hero - and that is what they've done here. The Hollywood Hero is always a reluctant hero - he doesn't want to kill anybody - but - he's really good at it. Now - in this light - how do they explain how Henry went to war with France. I mean - after all - the English go down to France - the French don't come to Britain. Well - here - they explain how a Hollywood Hero would do this - by saying that he was tricked into it. The Reluctant Warrior the Hollywood Hero is always portrayed as - would never invade anybody - so - if he does - it must be because he was tricked into it. Which is all Hollywood Horse Shit ... and that is what this movie is.
The historical function films like this have - is to get people interested in some thing - and then ... maybe ... some few of them ... will look it up some where to find out what it was really like. And - those that can't be arsed to do that - at least know that there was a Henry V who fought at the Battle of Agincourt ...
.
Nice video! You also could have talk about the fact that the Dauphin (Robert Pattinson) wasn't there at the battle and was already dead
True. The Dauphin was dead
Thanks for the history lesson. Very interesting
'The King' is awesome and your review of the movie is the best.
Another fun fact:
Henry (IV) Bolingbroke was the first post-conquest English king to speak English at his coronation and at his court.
If anyone is at all interested in the follow-on period in English medieval history (The Wars of the Roses), I recommend The White Queen miniseries. Like all things, it takes liberties with historical facts and likelihoods, but is still very good.
What?! No Farnsworth???
Next thing you'll tell us, is Men In Black never happened.
Great video, it answer all my questions about what really happen.
..the battle they showed in this film was not that well done, they needed more volleys by the archers and most of the killing was done by them after the French knights were off their horses and rolling in the mud. Henry V certainly was not down in the mud with them!
According to history, he was in the battle..
Well done DVD. Appreciate the History lesson. One thing Bollingbrooke is pronounced as BollingBROOKE, not BollingBROKE
BROOÒO as useful & entertaining all your vids are, this one ranking as top informative. U are a beast & thanks once again.
Thanks Darren! I watched The King the day it was released and though I'm not a huge fan of"historical" films, I thoroughly enjoyed it! I was transported back to the time of Henry V so I was able to get so much more from it then a few pages in a history book(or a few acts of a play!).
Sounds like a winner.
I’ll watch tonight!
Great review and history explanation! I still need to watch this. It looks great!
I watched Joker for the second time today! Lots of thoughts on it!
So far for this year these are my top 3 movies of 2019
*Parasite
*The Nightingale
*Joker
When I watched this film the first time I was disappointed we did not see the Battle of Shrewsbury. It was an important battle in the plays and real life. That was the battle when Henry got an arrow in the face.
But I understand them cutting it out if to show development in Henry and his view on war and killing. Or even if they only had enough money for the Agincourt battle.
John Falstaff was a real person. He was nothing like the character in the play. He was a great Knight and soldier. I think that is what they were trying to get at in this film.
It actually doesn't differ all that much. They have to make things seem like they happened faster and have good character dialog with each other.
He did in fact that he did have a very public feud with his father. It was literally mended by Henry V walking into court wearing an outfit that had hundreds and hundreds of needles hanging from it. (Mend.... a relationship). Seriously, that's how they started the mend it.
And, he was already a seasoned warrior by the time he became king. That scar on his face is actually from an arrow he took in battle before becoming king.... and the crazy thing is, it was actually stuck in his the back of his skull, he broke it off and finished the battle. Then had a tool invented so that they could remove it without killing him. He was a beast and good man at the same time.
Something this video doesn't talk about was the fact that The Battle of Agincourt was much different than they showed in the movie. Henry did use light armor to be more mobile, but he also used tons of pikes made of wood to counter the heavy mounted knights. Also, the tree lines on both sides were not where they hid and waited. The English archers were on both sides with their backs to the woods so they couldn't be flanked. And, that's the way they won the battle. Also, archers didn't shoot like they show in the movies. They might let off a volley or two but in reality, archers waited until they were close to their target so that they could aim for the weak spots like the neck and slots in the helms. They would fire at close range. Between the mud, the archers, and the faster movement of England's knights, they devastated the French. The French were really cocky because they thought that one, the king of England was young, and they had them far, far out numbered.
There was no "Sir John" and it was used to push the fact that while feuding with his father, he ran with gangs and robbers.
One more thing, I wrote most of this while the video was playing. So some of it is in the video. He missed quite a bit though.
Sir Jihn Falstaff was based on a real person: Sir John Oldcastle. Shakespeare wrote the play 200 years later, and the family of Oldcastle wouldn't let him use his name.
The Queen didn't speak English, because no one spoke English. At the time the language of the court was French and English was considered peasant language.
Thanks, nice video.
well done. glad to see another dimension of your person. you are my go to for streamed content. thx
I’d just watched the movie when this vid popped up on my feed. Very interesting and informative, thanks!
Mr. VanDamnit....hello brother.🐒😜

Great Movie ?! Buddy if you dont stick to the history why do you wanna make a historical movie ?! Shot it ... make it but name it something else. Pathetic. And please stop saying "Its only a movie" because its more than that. You can confuse people. Movies can be used as propaganda when they could be a way to teach people. If you dont stick to the history dont make historical movies. Do cartoons.
I believe King Henry ordered French POWs killed while the battle was still going on because he suspected he might lose the battle.
He brokes all the rules of war available in europ. It was a shock in whole europe nobility. I dont think he kills pow because he did thank lose. He kill pow because it was nobility people of the area who wanted conqueer and it was a possibility for him to create total disorder.
Another possible reason was that he didn't want any retreating knights to retreat and rally together with the remaining French forces.
One of the best movies I've ever seen......up until the end and ironically you didn't tell at the end of this video anything about the queens influence of the ending. Hmmmm. The ending rubbed me the wrong way sorry.
Nice try but you're off on your history as far as Falstaff happens there literally was a guy that was Henry V right hand man ended up dying at Agincourt and he was a battle-hardened veteran I would normally call somebody out on this stuff but you're literally making a RUclips channel so maybe clarify your actual history when you're calling somebody else out for their inaccuracies
I actually loved the movie , I thought it was really good , but obviously not everything is historical .
Your channel blew up man keep it up 👍
fml now i feel like wasting a few months playing crusader kings again
If you’d like to check out another review of The King and it’s historical inaccuracies, click here: ruclips.net/video/_5UmkuWS4C0/видео.html
Hey DVD, have you had a chance to check out this series
Mike Judge Presents: Tales From The Tour Bus?
I just watched both seasons on a Cinemax APK (fire stick app) and I'd love to hear your review on it.
I haven't and there are several series I'm hoping to get too soon. I'll add it to the list.
Loved this review/overview/history lesson. Thanks.
So cool can’t wait to watch it. I like the how you’re branching off on the more in-depth reviews and analysts. Rock on Chief!!
And I apologize for my f-ed up writing. I have a couple vaca days and Tuesday is the new Friday. Merica F yeah!!!
Very well described and synthesized while comparing Shakespearian drama with historical facts and the movie. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for this. I found it really interesting. Also, I like the new cut/shape of your beard. Very comely.
this is the best streaming service review channel
Watched this right after watching the movie.. greatly curated history lesson, thank you for lining up the events in the movie with the true history, was great to hear about the details such as the speech he gave, his and his queen's personality, relationships he had (or Shakespeare made up), etc!
Well Done U!!! You really knocked this one out of the park! If the movie is half as good as your explanation of it, viewing it will be time well spent. Thanks muchly for all your amazing efforts on this and all the other videos you post! Cheers!
Watched a so-so movie on Amazon called Pawn Shop Chronicles. Paul Walker and Matt Dillon were pretty good, but Brendan Frasers' performance was disappointing. Norman Reedus, Elijah Wood, and DJ Qualls had interesting roles..
I enjoyed it also but it’s not one I’d recommend I don’t think
once i saw the name Falstaff, i knew it was a Shakespeare adaptation.
Good Stuff
honest to god this was unsettling film because of the fact how betrayed you felt as watching the movie which is what made it so great.
Thank you for such an informative and interesting review. you don't list all your Patreon supporters ? right?
It depends on the tier they're in. Also, new supporters don't show up in videos immediately but they're generally added after a few weeks.
‘Coronated’, ‘brung’ ...really?
Timothy Charle-met lol weird way to say his name
Thanks, this was very interesting. Also.... you have pretty skin ( random lol)
He does have an immaculate complexion though. 😀
Movie was great killer movie really good
10:45 where is the link to the music 0.0
Excellent synopsis Darren.
Ty for all the great info but you're saying my favorite actor of all time name wrong it's French it's pronounced Chal-a-may
Not Chal-a-met. 😀👍
I just love how in real life Henry wasn’t even hesitant he was just like “RIGHT who wants to invade France?”
Falstaff is nothing like in Shakespeare but I get what you're saying
100 year war next please
I feel for Pattenson if he didnt do twilight he wouldnt be an actor at the moment but since he did them, well now he is seen as a shiny vampire. its hard for me to want to like him, i do. Just hard to see past Twilight. He's done many great movies, and i hope he plays batman well. He did really well in the rover, btw great movie you suggested!
Absolutely great movie...its a classic....I can watch over and over again like Gladiator
In France this film is highly critisized because of the number of historical innacuracies and the anti-french sentiment. But for an anglo saxon guy, it's totally accurate and an excellent movie lol !
I saw the criticism. Its from one man, who does not represent the whole of the country, and honestly, I just felt it was absurd. Its based on a play that was written over 400 years ago, and has been performed hundreds if not thousands of times since then. There have also been several screen adaptations.
If it was going to stir up anti-French sentiment, it would have done so long before now, but I've never heard of any French people being attacked a result of any performance or adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry V.
Plainly put, the French have had four centuries to complain, but they haven't: until one guy wrote a piece in a newspaper in 2019. Only just realized its offensive or, or something. Oh, and he thinks us plebs are so ignorant we'll just be taken in by it, and won't find out the real facts.
It's over Anakin, I have the high ground.
Perfect. I needed that succinct explanation if there’s any truth to the Netflix version of the real story of King Henry V.
I was thinking there is still enough of a story for a Part 2! But yeah, great flick.. and Pattinson was great
Where are all these links you speak of? I see no Nightingale or Music link.
Falstaff was based on John Oldcastle Henry V's friend and one time comrade, his name was changed at the request/demand of his still powerful family. Though John was trusted and protected Hal by the time it came to the campaign shown in the film he had become more radical in his Lollard (an early Protestant sect with socialist overtones) and was in open revolt eventually being executed in 1517.
Sorry 1417
Awesome
Great movie!! The lead actor was awesome 👏🏾
Good video and fact check too! Digging the hoodie too 👍🏻
Yes, it's half Shakespeare, half reality
Wheres our flicks of the week?
