That turned out great. I like the idea of metal flasks but the type that have separate sides bolted together means 8 castings for one flask. 2 is better than 8 any day.
Thanks Mark! I'll have the joy of making some multi piece aluminum bolt together flasks soon to replace the bigger heavy steel ones. I've been brain storming on how to avoid all that though and make them one piece as well.
Why do you think the corner was missing? That corner was at the bottom of the pattern, I would think it should have filled. Maybe sand had fallen there. 5x7 seems a little small to me at first. I took out a couple of rulers and made that size box shape. Yes small, but still big enough for some things. And not a lot of sand to ram. I think I would like some flasks that size. How much does the casting weigh? (thinking of how big a crucible I would need to make one)
I think if i would have poured at 30 to 50 degrees hotter it would not have done that. Its very smooth and looks like a cold condition and as the upper thicker section cooled it pulled it even more. There will be a part two so ill pull the crucible at 1350 degrees and see how that works. Yes they are small and shallow for small parts. I hate ramming 40 to 60 pounds of sand for a thumb size part. I will get back to you on the weight. Ask again on the part 2 video if i forget. Thanks for watching!
Im back! I was finishing other stuff and I wasn't making anymore videos till I could stick with it. I wont be taking another year long break this time! Im in Michigan.
