Dutch couple takes you on a walk on their off grid property in Portugal/ Coimbra (just bought it!)

- Thank you for watching! This video is made to document how the property looked when we just bought it (filmed on 3 September 2024). We will take you along the whole land and tell you what's already there and some of the plans for the future. Our goal is to transform this (already beautiful) place into a small farm with animals, lots of fruit trees, our own vegetables and having people come over to enjoy it with us. We want to build 2 or 3 accommodations + two camper spots and that will be our main income. But besides that we want to be involved with the local community and make business together. How? Well, we don’t exactly know jet but we leave a little bit over to spontaneous adventures.

Cool you liked this style of video; we where doubting about it. Next videos will be different though and shorter, but for us its now already cool to see the differences with 2 weeks ago so imagine after 2 years😍.
A tractor cleans it in a few hours if stay on top of it just like everyone that owns properties you have to clean the land our cut the grass

That is a great property, those huge pine trees are beautiful, and the house looks like is in good conditions, too. I often watch videos of foreigners buying land and derelict houses in Portugal and think of the amount of work they are putting themselves in. In your case, you are a young couple and the house seams nice (not a ruin at all), so you are up to a good start.
Haha yes. When we went searching for a home we also expected to buy an old house to renovate but things went different, and we are very happy about that😗.

Het feit dat de avocado boom is zo vol met vruchten wil zeggen dat er meer dan genoeg water is. Het riet duidt daar ook op.
De nespera werd al genoemd in de comments. Ik vind het niet zo lekker: veel grote pitten, weinig vruchtvlees.
Het lijkt een groot terrein te zijn (2, 3 hectares?), om dat met een bushmaaier in het gareel te houden is véél werk. Het kleine jonge boompje is, denk ik, een kerseboom. Dat alles droog is is normaal voor de tijd van het jaar. Het huis lijkt me redelijk veilig wat betreft brandgevaar. Wel altijd alle dennenaalden ea branbaar meteriaal opruimen. En een sprinklerinstallatie is een heel goed idee.
Wat betreft schaduw: loofbomen zijn veel meer resistent tegen brand en geven natuurlijk ook veel schaduw.

Ja wat jij zegt is een goeie: er is heel de zomer geen water gegeven en die avocado boom doet het goed dus er is water! Het is 4Ha groot. Aanleggen van watersysteem staat idd op ons lijstje ;).
Lovely property - the wonderful shapes of the pine trees and the abundance of fruit trees are going to bring you both joy on your journey! Thanks for bringing us along - it's going to be hot work but immensely rewarding. Looking forward to the drone overview too! Two suggestions: a map would be useful to help us orientate... and secondly, please only pan very slowly in handheld mode or it gets a bit queasy! Good luck - look forward to your future vlogs. 😎
Hi Anthony; thank you! Yes I have a drone video already but it’s more a beautiful long drone shot and I don’t think people will like it. So I have a new idea: lisa is drawing a map to design the land so maybe we will show that and combine it with drone shots. Also; on our second video we used a stabilizer/ gymbal so I think that video has no sudden movements? Have a nice day🫶🏼

Amazing property, welcome to this lovely country. Watch out with your lovely doggo for the pine tree caterpillars. After January they start growing, and in spring they come down the trees in massive balls or usually lines (they are called processionary because they imitate a snake and follow each other). Super interesting for the dogs, but super dangerous. Can make their tongue fall out or even kill them if fully ingested. It is an absolute plague in Portugal, not much to do unfortunately in pine areas, except control the doggo. I have a super curious 2 year old GSD in also a 4Ha farm, so last year was a full ordeal to not let them find them.

That's a lot of strimming/brush cutting to do. Don't forget to take breaks often or you will get the 'shakes' from the vibrations. Beautiful property and I can't wait to watch your progress.

@@Quinta.Ivonne 3 hours with breaks every hour I hope? I did 2 hours with a Stihl brushcutter recently, mostly bramble/blackberry, and I had the shakes for about half an hour afterwards. Spilled my break time tea everywhere. Take care. Wish I could come and help.

What a time to move to that region of Portugal... That being said the area is super nice with interesting little towns and its close to a good wine region.
Yes we are very very happy to be here and this location. Only 30 mins to the beach and 30 minutes to Coimbra😎.

We live part time in Montenegro the tree you were asking about is a Sharon fruit. But some of them will be tingling on the lips, if so don’t worry they just need to get cold put them in fridge and they are fine.
Most people say it’s a Nespereira.

Boa sorte, propriedade muito boa, casa muito bem conservada e bonita. Muito trabalho pela frente no exterior, limpar todo esse mato, vai dar muito trabalho. Arvores tambem tem de ser cortadas devido ao foco de incendios. Tem muitas arvores de fruto e amendoeiras, jardim precisa de agua para voltar a ficar bonito. Obrigada por virem viver em Portugal.

You have a lot of pine nut pines in your land…..i used to climb pine nut trees when i was a kid for the delicious pine nuts.

I was hearing you talking about shade around the house, it is very nice, but be VERY CAREFUL, don't have big trees near the house. You may have seen recently the problems we have in Portugal with wild fires. Your property has a LOT of fuel to burn. Be careful about planting trees near the house.
Those big pine trees are great. I'd have them have a "hair cut". There seems to be a lot of old dead branches. Have those cut, for fire safety. Keep the bare minimum of plan fuel close to the house. As you are so remote, and without any more houses nearby, in case of a big fire, like these ones we had last week, your place will be of low priority for the firefighters, as not a lot is at risk, just one house. Never, ever, rest. Keep it clean during the whole Summer! And again, be careful with trees near the house! If you ever have a fire there (God forbid) your house will be much safer if it doesnt have big trees around.

Congratulations on buying the farm and the beautiful house, especially since it is in Coimbra County. I don't know how far your farm is from the beautiful university city with its musical heritage. I was there a few months ago and I am also looking for a farm to buy. If you have any information regarding the sale, write to me. You have peaches and apricots too. I suggest you stop the bamboo from spreading, that is your best land.
The tree with the one nut on top is a Pecan or Walnut.
Pecan would be insane😍, we love them. The bamboo is not really bamboo it is a reed. In a comment someone even mentioned the Latin name for it🙏🏻. I think we wait for the winter to see what happens with the rain.
2:01 that’s a Loquat tree, delicious little things… also the leaves make great tasting tea, you just need to brush the little hairs out of it

Helemaal geweldig ik ben al geabonneerd geen last van de vele branden bij jullie in de buurt. wij zelf gaan volgend jaar maart emigreren naar Mombeja een dorpje bij Beja in Alentejo, wij hebben daar al een huisje sinds 3 jaar en nu gaat het echt gebeuren. Veel succes met alles ik volg jullie met mijn vrouw Samen.

Nice property you have there. Congratulations on your purchase. The plant on the lower terrace looks like giant reed (Arundo donax) which thrives in damp places so it's a good indicator that the soil there receives and retains a lot of water. The unidentified fruit tree is undoubtedly a nespereira (English: loquat; Latin: Eriobotrya japonica). Good luck on your new adventure!
Wow you know your plants ;). Yes the giant reed is mainly on a lower point of the land. We are doubting if it’s a good or bad thing they are there…?
@@Quinta.Ivonne Just me trying to be helpful. :) The giant reed is considered an invasive species in Europe so it's something to keep a watchful eye on. But it's also a good soil stabiliser, and will help to trap any sediments washed down the property from the higher terraces, especially when the rains come. See how the land performs over the winter and how much (if any) erosion you get. It may be beneficial to keep it, or at least some of it. It's also a really good biofuel!

That plant everybody called bamboo, it's not bamboo, it's Cana- comum, or Cana do reino, "Arundo Donax". The Canas are very useful to support plants on vegetable gardens or flowers.

Proficiat, wat een geweldig prachtig stuk grond én huis! Je groententuin kan je best dichtbij de meest vochtige grond (waterbron) zetten en een plek met relatief veel schaduw. In warmere landen verbranden de groenten in de zon en moet je schaduwdoeken hangen... Ik spreek spijtig genoeg uit ervaring 😂 Best ook binnen de omheining rond je huis, als je niet wil dat de dieren alles opeten 😉
Goede tips! We hebben een waterput dus dit zou geen probleem moeten zijn denken we. Een schaduwrijke plek is lastiger, maar we hebben wel wat plekken in gedachte. Of wellicht 1 plek meer 1 de zon voor bijv tomaten? En de andere meer schaduw? Groetjes van ons🫶🏼

The unknown tree is a loquat (nespereira in portuguese). The fruits are really delicious, and not so common, probably because the production period is short.

That second tree that you did not know is a pecan nut tree, and the first unknown one is a loquat tree.
We love pecan nuts, it will be a few years probably until it give a good amount of nuts😜
@@Quinta.Ivonne I hope that you have more than one, they are not self fertilising, and if you do, hopefully they are different varieties. They produce more nuts that way. I have planted a few here, and the eldest one should start producing nuts this spring (in South Africa) as it is 7 years old now.

Wat ik uitdagend vind, is om vanuit Nederland (online) geschikte huizen te vinden. Op bijvoorbeeld Idealista is veel te vinden, maar beperkte omschrijvingen en slechte foto’s. Ook veel ruïnes tegen erg onrealistische prijzen. Om deze redenen heb ik besloten om me lokaal te gaan oriënteren en zo ook het klimaat en leefomgeving te kunnen ervaren. Ik ben benieuwd hoe jullie het (prachtige!) huis hebben gevonden
We houden contact :). (Handigste is Instagram daarvoor). Ahh ja klopt, de prijzen die ze vragen slaan helemaal nergens op. Lokaal zijn en zoeken is zeker enorm aan te raden. We gaan hier asap een video over maken; hoe wij het huis hebben gevonden.
Het lijkt op een mispel boom er zitten grote pitten in en ze zijn zo heerlijk die hebben wij ook in Türkiye ,jullie hebben een groot gebied met bomen wij hebben ook veel fruitbomen en ook olijven zo alles uit eigen tuin

The fruit tree with the small yellow fruits is a " nespereira" it's fruit is "nespera"...
You have to pick the avocados from the tree to rippen...avocados DO NOT rippen on the tree...pick them and wait a few days and they will rippen.
We picked about 20 yesterday😏
Well just seen your blog and it looks like the previous owner made the classic mistake of renovating the living are first instead of the garden, too many off gridders do the same. When you buy a property like that. The first thing is to sort the garden and get your food growing as we all have to eat and better from the garden than from the shop and once started the crops then you can renovate the house to your liking as the crops will grow without you, but you are lucky as the house looks habital so you can get straight to the garden as it definitely needs work.. Good luck and have fun.
Maybe the previous owners didn’t want to produce their own food? I don’t know but that’s also an option. Yes we will start soon with the vegetable garden en making a plan for the land.

The name of that yellow fruit is Loquat in English, Magnório in Portuguese 🇵🇹 or Ameixa-amarela or Nêspera Japonesa 🇧🇷

Orange fruits are called "nesperas" in Portuguese, and the tree is a Nespereira :D. I live in Coimbra but also saving to buy some land for ecoturism, it is a dry micro climate but feasable if you have some man power to work the land properly, welcome to Portugal guys!

My mother lives in Spain and loves the "Nisperos". I'm not such a fan 😅
@@vincentvanderzouwen1020 i confess i do eat them, and find them pleasing, but they must be ripe and not all trees are the same, some nesperas just get acid af 🥵you must pick the best trees. My old family also eats them by the bucket.

Gefeliciteerd en welkom in het geweldige Portugal! Succes met alle klussen en houd vooral heel veel plezier; het wordt geweldig, maar je zult ook tegenslagen krijgen. Wat is de reden dat de vorige (Duitse) eigenaars het hebben verkocht? Want ze waren goed bezig met de tuin en het huis.
Dank je wel Peter! Tot nu toe vinden we het echt geweldig hier bezig te zijn en zelfs nu al dingen te zijn veranderen. De fruitbomen waren bevoordeeld compleet verstopt tussen de prikkel planten en nu kunnen we er gewoon bij. De vorige eigenaren zijn helaas overleden, in 2022. Ja ze waren echt goed bezig.
nespera is this fruit tree or chinese wollmispel in german, you should connect the rainwaterpipes with a tank or sthg like a pool, raining at least 4 month winter and springtime, to save the groundwater you shouldnt waste the rainwater, the unknown tree by the house is a wallnut tree

Denk wel dat je beter af bent om een paar locals met bosmaaiers, een platte wagen en een tractor in te huren want dit gaat je helemaal breken als je in je eentje alles probeert te maaien - je kunt je energie beter ergens anders in steken 😅

What a lovely property! Nice to see some more Dutch speaking people around. Personally, with a property like yours, I would make water collection a real priority. (perhaps some gutters and 1000L IBC tanks next to many of those buildings) Perhaps also some ponds spread across the property. And probably also a good idea to clear an area to protect the buildings from wildfires, as we've just seen. I think they recommend an area of 30m from the houses that you keep well maintained and well watered? Worth thinking about, given recent events. But looks wonderful! So many possibilities.

Leuk stukje paradijs met veel mogelijkheden suc6 voor de uitdagende mooie toekomst. De boom/tak direct voor de veranda zou ik weg halen. Voordat je het weet is deze groot zodat je huis er schade door gaat krijgen. Recent ervaring mee gehad, en dat viel uiteindelijk tegen, en was heel jammer. Ga er voor, en laat ons af en toe ook mee genieten.

I really like your house and garden but one thing that is a worry are all the pine trees you have on your property. You have to be very very careful come January/February to check for processionary caterpillars. They are a really big threath to your dog and you as well. You can see the nests, they look like white cotton candy up in the trees.
Thats a good tip thank you🌲. I don’t think a tractor is something that we would use but who knows, we can ofcourse always have a local farmer come with his tractor if we need it for a specific job.

Then buy goats since goats eat everything and are not picky eaters like sheep. They will maintain the property for you long term and you won’t pay a lot of money in cutting
