  • Welcome to an episode of "Stick Shift" from yours truly here at Speaking In Drums. This segment is my post-show talk about the drumsticks I used from this past Saturday's night show where I took the Vater Fatback 3A's for a spin. I give a run-down on the specs and performance of the stick and how it appeals to my playing. Some other stories including finally getting them literally in my hands are included as well.

    Hey Howard, thank you for taking the time to do this review! Cool to hear that you got around to trying out our sticks and glad to hear that you have been dgging our Fatback 3As. As far as the finish goes, we do have a very lite sealer coat and lacquer on our sticks. We also offer our Fatback 3A in our Nude Series, which is the same exact stick just without any finish : www.vater.com/#!/product/981768 Thanks again for giving Vater sticks a try, we appreciate your support. All the best to you.

      I appreciate your feedback! Very happy with your products. My next series of vids will cover the Fatback revisited featuring Vater grip tape which I've used for a few months now as well as another model I've not tried out live yet. I wasn't certain if you had a finish on it or if it was nude but it's good to know Vater offers both. I may need more warm-up time to get acquainted with the finish on future shows. Definitely will try it out. Thanks again!

    How's the rim click and rim shot with it?

    • @TheRealHowardYates
      @TheRealHowardYates  2 года назад

      Thanks for writing, Ryan!
      To be honest, I don't do a lot of rim shots except for on songs like Folsom Prison. The shock from those few rim shots, however, aren't as hard on the hands because of the weight and thickness. It absorbs well.
      Rim clicks, which I do a lot of, are pretty much the same as any other stick but it depends on which end of the stick are you holding when doing the click or cross-stick. It's slightly more work on the hand if you flip the stick, using the butt end to play on the rim. It does cut better with volume using the butt end on the rim as opposed to playing the click with the shoulder.
      Hopefully my experience helps you!

    I've been rockin the Vater 3A fatback since freshman year in high school....which was 17 years ago. I love them. It's the only stick I buy. Fits my playstyle, hands, and matches well with my heavy hands.

      Thanks for commenting! The Fatbacks are awesome and provide a good workout. With heavier sticks I get balance and a confident feel. It started with marching band and it's just natural. I can't use lighter sticks for anything except for maybe jazz which I never play live or in a studio. Everything else is 5B minimum and heavier. Vater has put together a fine set of sticks with Fatback. The problem I have is that in current live situations is that I'm forced to play lighter so I can't go full-out. It's like I'm playing lounge metal.
      Cool profile name and pic, btw!

      @@TheRealHowardYates HAHA Thanks for the compliment. I agree with you on how you can really assert yourself with the heavier sticks that have less tapering. I also can't use light sticks. Like jazz or 7a size sticks just don't cut it. Being so heavy handed I whind up breaking them because I feel like I'm not getting the follow through that I'm use to. Appreciate your perspective. I can dig it.

      @@Silent_Shadow Same here with 7a's. I don't feel I have enough control to simply let the sticks do the work. Medium to heavier models feel like an extension of my arms and hands.

    Good vid! When I was playing in rock and metal bands, I always felt that 3A's were the perfect balance between speed and power, especially at smaller venues when I had to keep up with the rest of the band that cranked it up to 11 - they were the most forgiving. The shorter neck and barrel gave me more power. 5B's and 2B's were too heavy for speed, 5A's and anything smaller just made me feel like a child, not enough power. After my metal days, my go to stick was the Travis Barker signature from Zildjian but I'm going to give the 3A's another go for my retired electronic home drumming :)

      So to update on this.... The 3A's turned up. They're slightly heavier than the Travis Barker sticks which are just that little bit faster. But they're still really decent for hard hitters that still want a bit of speed.

    I'm a percussionist as well, when it comes to royal blood, I've been using the vic virth SD1 Generals, and any other song I use 5A sticks

    Vic Firth's tip on their 3A is pretty beefy as well. Much bigger than the Gadd sig. Furthermore I completly agree on your take on speed/weight and having to work a little harder for it. It just gets me in the zone I like to be in when playing (live) Ever tried the Vic Firth F1 sticks? Same specs as the 3A but with a ball tip, so maybe a little less or different weight.

    • @TheRealHowardYates
      @TheRealHowardYates  3 года назад

      Haven't tried the the F1. In fact, I haven't tried the 3A from Vic Firth. Your description of the F1 reminds me of Zildjian's Travis Barker sticks that I use which have a ball tip. Definitely will check these out and see if I like the feel. Not opposed to Vic Firth at all. My latest video reviews Vic Firth's Danny Carey sticks which are a hybrid 5B and Extreme models.
      The feel, grip, balance and weight are what helps me determine my choices. My current favs have completely different tips: Ball, acorn, and tear drop. It's whatever works. But I will look into the 3A and F1. Thanks!

      Yeah the Carey sig is an amazing stick as well. I could be wrong but I think the Barker sig is longer than the 3A and F1. And length, to me is what affects the feel of the stick the most. Half a tip longer or shorter can really make a difference. The reason I like 3A's is due to the weight in the front. Thanks!

    The heavier, wider stick gives me more finger control. I like the Promark marching hickory.

    Hi. I have a weird question and it may not sound real. So around 5-6 years ago I was at a wendy’s in austin, texas. We were waiting in line and some guy walked up to us and asked us how to get to the motley crue concert. We gave him directions and he handed me a Fatback 3A and signed it for me. What do you think it’s worth? I cannot read cursive so I do not know the guys name.

      Tommy lee? Player of Motley Crue? Look up his sticks he uses on equip board if it’s his it’s easily worth 400-500 bucks just judging if it’s him if not otherwise I have no idea.
