I like both princesses honestly. To me Celestia seems like a chess player in the show. She stays out of the way and subtly guides Twilight and her friends down the right path. I like Luna because she is really relatable. She is a character that has been alone, done bad things, and has to deal with the consequences and guilt of what she did every day. To me both princesses are great in their own ways and as characters compliment each other wonderfully. This is just my opinion though.

Actually, in an interview, Lauren Faust stated that Celestia _was_ going to be Queen Celestia, though Hasbro thought it would be better to make her a princess instead because of the image Disney built of queens being evil and princesses being good. They feared Celestia being a queen could affect the sales of Celestia toys because little girls might have wanted to avoid the "evil" character. Despite her official title being "princess", by all practical means, Celestia is _definitely_ a queen.
I think ascending into an alicorn happens naturally once you make it there, just like how it happened when Twilight became an alicorn Celestia did not directly transform Twilight into an alicorn
