I think Baba Yaga is an ancient remnant of a prehistoric Deity. She's the malevolent side of motherhood and the dark Earth (related to/ or similar to the Indian goddess Kali). And probably played a bigger role in the lives of proto Indoeuropeans.
She was probably a revenant or vengeful goddess. And probably had multiple faces.

    • @KS-PNW
      @KS-PNW 9 месяцев назад +1

There would certainly be precedent for that. If you look at the way the Church incorporated bits of existing faiths into their teachings in places like Ireland (in the 3rd and 4th century C.E.)and Mexico (16th and 17th century). Not to mention the way they used the Norse people's own beliefs to convince many of them that Ragnarok had already happened and now it was time to embrace the new god (early to mid medieval period).
I could see a nature goddess slowly getting reframed as a witch who should be avoided and feared. Would also explain why occasionally she had benign qualities and was even sometimes helpful..
Cool idea if nothing else 👍

If anyone is looking for more hag content/ideas I'd really recommend the 2e Van Richten's Guide to Hags. It has a lot of cool ideas for using hags in darker, more Gothic style campaigns.
It was made for Ravenloft (real old school Ravenloft so it WILL include some darker content, just FYI) but it could be used for all sorts of campaigns, as long as the group is ok with some horror elements.
Its got some game mechanics but a lot of it is roleplaying and thematic info. Honestly the 2E Van Richten's guides were all pretty good.

Great story. The Blood hag reminds me of a story I once read online.
A meeting of a familiar face in a town, a gift to said friendly lady, and finally...
the twist: The faceless remains of the lady found in her own house.
A successful deception that serves as an introduction to an evil force.

Maybe a wizard sage where the party gets their potions in between adventures.
You keep receiving this message, but only when in town, via whispering wind.... "Bomarc, I'm in trouble. Meet me in my shop, the Tiny Tincture Supply." Every night, one hour before low noon. But only while in town.... You get there but she doesn't recognize you. And she should. You've shared more than just sales.

@@RichesandLiches I have GM’d with my group for 5-6 years, and while one doesn’t like Call of Cthulhu, he is more than happy to have been cursed with Armor that looked way too good to be true.
Sometime players don’t like mechanics (I.e. sanity from Co) as it’s a grindstone making their beloved characters wither away instead of getting stronger with each level. They want to be superheroes. But if you don’t use it, or use a mechanic like corruption similar to what Matt Mercer has done (where spending time near evil or unholy places or things they have to make a saving throw against corruption which gets harder the more corruption You have and your proximity to it, and recedes as you get away from the evil). I found it online looking for corruption rules.
P.s. the armor my PC is wearing starts awesome, and then slowly becomes the bane of his existence but he can’t tell as he’s cursed to never want it out of his sight. 😬

Let's not forget Hags are finds of Hades and can ought to have all the Feindish powers to summon other lesser finds, certain resistances bonuses and other traits of feindom, etc. I suspect we who roll 2e are inclined to take that as writ, but maybe what's writ has been re written in new versions.

A Hag with no pets? 😳
The visual at 24.30 is terrifying. 😟 Your background audio is TREMENDOUS! I use headphones and appreciate the extra effort. Very creepy. You are a master of setting the mood.
The Hag is a big task. You could easily spend 20 minutes on every type of Hag, especially the Black. In Europe people are terrified of the Hag still today. They claim it hovers over peoples chests as they sleep, sucking out their souls and invading their dreams and psyches.
The languages a Hag knows hints at much, MUCH greater power than is known by anyone less than a sage. A Hag must be great in power to barter with the Devils of hell, Succubi and worse.
    Good job. 🎈🥳🎈

@RichesandLiches - I like to come back to this video when my mind won't stop. It reminded me of a scary recurring dream I kept having as a young child.
My sister and I snuck out of the house one Halloween night. Around the block there was an old dead end road that was blocked off and had a No Trespassing sign on it. Of course that meant nothing to several of us young kids. But not many of us kids ever went too far down this "driveway". The fear was invasive no matter how bold you were starting the walk.
For one you couldn't see far down it. Every 50 feet or so it took a hard right or left turn and the woods there were darker than everywhere else around there. There were a lot of creeper vines that hung down from the trees. No where else in our area had those. And the ground was always pretty muddy. And this time her and I went farther down that road than ever before. It went down a steep hill and after a hard left turn the road went straight for a long time. Our land is flat for hundreds of miles.
Short version, my sister and I found a large house with an attached garage. We're avoiding every sign we should leave. We sneak in thru a broken window, mildly cutting ourselves in several places. We're up some stairs and we hear someone up there with us talking lightly when suddenly my sisters right hand falls off like someone had just sliced it off with a sword. It's not bleeding much at all and that scared us worse. The edges of her stump are dark just like her severed hand. We pick it up and we're now leaving. No warning. No attack. And we're scared to death.
That's when my face starts to hurt really bad. The bones in my head are just killing me. Like a headache I've never had before. I realize it's getting difficult to breathe and my sister is looking at me in horror.... She drops her hand and reaches for my face suddenly, her eyes just bulging in sheer terror. My chin was slowly moving towards my eye brows and swallowing my face. My face is closing?!? That's why I can't breathe.
It was like my bones had turned to clay or rubber and were shrinking or something. She can't help me with one hand. If I grab my chin and forehead just right I can muscle them apart just enough to get air into my nose and mouth. But it hurts so bad. Touching it hurts badly. Pulling on my chin and forehead is even worse. But the moment I release they begin to shrink again. We can hear giggling coming from a room near us around the staircase. We start to run again, trying to be quiet, trying to hold my face open while she holds her severed right hand in her left.....
And I wake up. I had that dream for many years. Usually about once a year. I wake up panicking and struggling to breathe every time. We never get any farther but once in awhile I wake myself because I just cannot continue with it. I haven't had that dream in a while but your Hag video reminds me of it every time I watch it. What an idea for a curse...... Necromantic spell? (She had our blood from the window)
