  • The basic AZ-EQ mount has proved it's metal under a few uses since I've owned it.
However there is something that I need to address, to you all and will help solve this huge problem I'm experiencing with this mount and make this budget Astronomy starter mount to perform better for tracking and easier use for observing the night sky.
Please everyone, if you do own this mount, please follow the video and do this tune-up. (unless the mount is still under warranty then I advise you all not to under take this repair).
However please do not panic if this mount applies to you, this tune-up is achievable. And if you find this info valuable to you.
Please hit a like, share this video and if you just visited my Channel, please subscribe and hit the notifications bell, so that you don't miss out any videos I put out.
There will be many more video content like this which will give practical useful info to help newcomers and the astro community to undertake Astro practical tuning, to let viewers get see the Astro equipment I review in detail with my own opinion and experience with the equipment I own, (Hence I am not endorsed with any sponsors to give biased unrealistic reviews).

Very thorough. Everything I’ve ever purchased needed a work over on grease. Great video. That’s a cool mount. Looks very user friendly.

I don't even own one of these mounts but I still watched the entire video. I have an AZ-GTi mount and I'm thinking some of these techniques might come in handy one day.

Thanks for watching, the eyepiece method is good to get Polaris for polar alignment, but it is time consuming and fiddly to get grips with, but it works. Another method is to try the guidescope, using Polar align, which is much more accurate but it means you need a laptop to connect to a guide camera. ruclips.net/video/vW0y8L2Z66w/видео.html

Dear Martin, thanks for this. Did it this afternoon, and it really smoothed things out. I think I can now really enjoy my 4 inch Mak on this. The only thing I couldn’t manage, was loosening the retainer rings on the worm gears. They just didn’t come loose. But that is not much of an issue!

g`day martin great video on the mount tune up .. did you look into getting better bearings for the ra and dec the ones in the mount been dry and looking a bit average in quality. i think i would get a beer and look into it on the net for a hour and maybe find some better nylon wasters material or something else like teflon (like you can use on dobsonian mount) and good quality bearings but that all cost money and the way you have done it. it cost nothing but the users time and a little grease so for the budget /entry astronomer. its ideal fix to do it your way.. maybe its a opportunity for one of the telescope shops to put a kit together with replacement super tune parts
thanks for posting this video mate
    cheers

How can you track each celestrial body? I mean how do you know exactly where to point your telescope?

Thanks Martin! My SkyMax 102 with Avant mount is two years old but has been used only a few dozen nights so far, so lubrication of the Avant should be fine. However, when earlier today I installed the new Motor Drive, I also noticed that the RA movement was too tight for it. So I watched your video and learnt just how to loosen a bit the internal RA friction. I followed your tests: it should be tight enough so that the mount (with no telescope or counterweight) does not rotates under its own weight, but free enough so that it does rotate freely if the counterweight (always with no telescope) is attached. By the way, I did not have the clockmakers' two-pronged tool, but I made do with two filed-out common iron nails and a pair of long tweezers. It all took about 15 minutes. Thanks again!
[Please note that I do have a webpage on the SkyMax 102 Avant, www.braybaroque.ie/photo/mak102/ , with all sorts of advice on accessories and procedures for the beginner. This said, I am a simple amateur, far away from your level of expertise!]
