Hey Guys! Good news, I have released a free set of plans for the reel. If you are interested, subscribe to my channel and shoot me an email at JHreels@gmail.com and I'll get a load of files moving your way.
great thanks so.much for sharing this project with us. Just getting into.learning machining as a hobby and my end game is to make a reel for myself. starting small just a click Pawl for my 3wt. have access to lathes and milling (4th axis as well) and a cnc tormach. so excited about another thing to learn. already have my pile of aluminum billets to play with.
since you are flipping the part from operation to operation, how are you making sure the center hole with bearing concentric to the outside of the rim. After assembly and you spin your spool, does it have a slight wobble or off center rotation?
Hah! Yeah I have this little cart my camera rolls on. I take the inspiration from How its Made which Im sure has had an impact on alot of machining videos. My personal favorite is thisoldtony's spring video: ruclips.net/video/jAawhg6JtyY/видео.html
Justin, the bearings are ceramic/stainless hybrids from Bocabearings.com. The clips are these: www.mcmaster.com/#retaining-rings/=15kjn6k you will need a little tool to install them properly
Hi man! This is amazing peace of work! I wanted to ask you if the fly line goes between the spool and the frame while casting? I homemade a fly reel and designed the spool same way just like you and when i'm casting, the fly line often goes between the spool and the frame.

Ouch! I was hoping you would show what the spool looked like after flinging it across your garage...

Thanks man, yeah a Tormach is 10x cooler than anything I've got! If you do it take some videos!
its coming along really nice. 👍

At 12:40, are you now the Clipsprung Channel?
;)
I like your admissions of humanity, and the reel's shaping up nicely...no pun intended.
Nice job.

Inspiring me to start mine! What bearings did you use? Also, I've never seen those clips. Where did you get those?

There's definitely a gap there, we'll see when I get the knob done if it becomes an issue. Thanks for the comment.
