  • What makes a good travel companion? I talk about two things I noticed I don't like in others, totally not going into what makes me an exhausting travel companion for others. Mostly my restlessness, probably, lol.

For me, the best travel companions are those that are chilled out and easy going. While I love having an itinerary and a checklist of places to visit and thing to do, I also love not sticking to it religiously and sometimes just "following our noses". I once travelled with a girl who just seemed so stressed all the time and worried that things wouldn't be open or attractions wouldn't be as good as we were hoping and it just drained me!! Haven't travelled with her since!

I'm the same, have a list of things that would be interesting or good to see, but not if it turns into stress or endless waiting in line. It's vacation after all :)

I love it when my travel companion is calm cool and collected. I have anxiety, so someone who is also anxious makes me double anxious. So if my travel partner has it together (I'm extremely prepared usually), we travel smoothly :D Communication is very important also, because I have had a trip ruined before because we didn't communicate so we thought the other was angry when we both weren't angry, just insecure. Ah well we learn from everything.

Honestly, I love travelling alone way too much! There were only a few select people that I didn't get in a fight with when I stayed with them in a room for more than a few days :D and I just really like deciding myself when to get up, what to do, where to go, where to eat etc.
At this point, if I'm not travelling alone, I like travelling with my parents most! Especially now that I don't live at home anymore, I really cherish that time. And they know me well, they know I need me time and they do too. I can't remember ever having a fight with my parents on a holiday and I really love looking back at all our relaxing and adventurous trips! Also at this point they still pay for everything, so that is definitely a plus :D

And you know what, that never changes! Whenever I meet up with my mum, I just don't even think of packing money as I totally bank on her to pay. Sometimes I feel bad as I think I'm old enough to be able to pay, but somehow I can't/don't haha.

A good travel companion is fun and entertaining when I'm energetic, is smarter than I am and willing to educate me about new things, and sleeps on the same schedule that I sleep. My good travel companion is my iPad.

I traveled with my best friend last summer and oh man oh man...we were together for two months nonstop. It was a little rough at times. The trip started out great because it was the beginning and so no issues came up, but getting towards the middle of our trip she started to get crankier and crankier and then there was kind of a breaking point. And at that point we kind of sat down and realized what was going on (which was that I didn't eat as frequently as she did and she was getting hangry without realizing, lol) we were able to save the trip. But I specifically remember one day that was just miserable. It was also nice when we met up with other people because there was less pressure for us to amuse each other only. Communication is super super important, you can't be afraid to hurt each others' feelings because in the end it does more damage than good. I think it helped on our trip too because I would specifically tell her that I needed to not be around her and that I needed alone time and she completely understood. We are also both big readers so we would just sit and read quietly, which were honestly some of my favorite parts of the trip, lol. Towards the end we were in the UK and exhausted of traveling and probably of being together all the time, but knowing that we could just sit and not talk to each other was really really nice.

That sounds like a really nice trip. Traveling with another reader can really help, because you can have me time together :)

My Vegas travel companion is just as happy as I am to go off on his own to play poker. If we meet for dinner fine, otherwise no big deal - perfect. My wife and I are both “let’s get up early and start doing stuff” as opposed to “we’re on holiday let’s sleep in” which has been tough travelling with other couples. Paradoxically I find that travelling in a large group works better as I can slip away to be alone and not feel like I need to worry about everyone else.

Good point about traveling with groups, haven't done that in a long time, maybe I should start that again.

    Hey great video!
    Never actually considered this!
Personally I agree with most of the points, especially the part about being with the person for a long time without being annoyed after a while!
I also like someone who isn't too picky about what they want to do.
    Keep the videos coming!

Thank you, and I agree, a too strict itinerary is a no go, as well.

I'm sorry guess you'll have get the old standby a decent dog still have that jack Russell terrier right but no you've gotten to that point in your life where you can be by yourself it doesn't bother you but it seems to bother every one else you can see them on the train thinking oh she's by herself reading a book

I have a very hard time traveling with most people expect my husband. We like many of the same things and are always looking to try new things. So all and all we make good traveling companions.

As it should be. I always think for me a partner at least is someone I don't mind having around, haha. Great that you also share interests :)

You sure get to know a person by travelling with them. Good, bad or ugly. lol... Sorry you had an unpleasant experience with your friend. Better luck next time! I cannot deal with inertia and indecision - those who waste valuable vacation days trying to decide what they'd like to do, this especially bothers me because when you travel abroad normally you have months or at least weeks to think ahead and be somewhat prepared. At least have a clue before you get on the plane. lol I also cannot deal with people who are 'over-planners' -determined to cram in as much sightseeing into every day as possible. I guess I like relaxation, adventure and sightseeing in equal measure. Too much of one or the other sends me around the twist. lol

Same, I love taking the top 10 guides for a new city and thus get an idea of what I "should" see there and then try to get to it, but don't stress if I don't see everything and got to do/see other things instead.

I speak very plainly and am in a minority. Like you I plan to take care of my own needs and need others to be direct about theirs. I went on my first solo holiday a couple of weeks ago and it was so great to be on my own schedule. I think my ideal travel companion would be someone I could regroup and relax with and then split up from during the day to hit our own lists of target destinations.

    What an interesting question!
I think that what I need in a travel companion isn't always the same every day. Sometimes I'm feeling quiet and reserved, and I could really use a friend to pull me out of a black hole. Other times I've got loads of energy to spare, and not even Usain Bolt could keep up with me. I think it depends on how I'm feeling!
Great video, and thanks for posing such a thoughtful question!
Lots of support from Japan (^^)v

    interesiting video!
I mostly travel with family which so far workes out alright, though sometimes we have our bumps.. :p
what i need in a travel companion is someone who doesn't over plan things. sure it's nice to have an idea of what we could do, but I also like to justt go with whatever feels right at that time or if we come across somethign exciting that we didn't know about before etc. I also need someone who sais what they want. I wnat them to have a good time as well, though not in a way where I don't have a good time anymore :P so yeah I guess someone with who I can communicate well :)
and preferably also someone who isn't super hyper all the time, i need some more quit time as well..
