It's always interesting to hear about relatively obscure historical figures who were important links in the chain of progress. I'm interested in medicine so this was right up my alley. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Another great educational video Sir! Such a pity that your efforts do not result in a greater volume of views. I would be interested to hear you views (potential new episode?) on the "growth" of Asperger type issues in modern society. Has it really grown or is normal bad behaviour now classified as an illness? It would appear to me (a humble engineer) that each segment of humanity that is anywhere distant from mean values is now classified as an "illness" requiring understanding if not treatment.
Thanks Michael, this is a fascinating question - I was planning to talk about Hans Asperger and his syndrome, but that covers a lot of the same ground as the T4 Aktion Program, but I think this issue is a really interesting one.
@@professorgraemeyorston I wonder if you could possibly cross-link a T4 Aktion video with (or in conjunction with) Dr Mark Felton who has 1.75 mill subscribers. It may boost your views. ruclips.net/user/MarkFeltonProductions
Hi Professor, I had not heard of Dr.Battie prior to seeing your video. As soon as it started playing I wondered if there was an association between Dr. Battie's name and the common expression of someone being 'batty' or 'bats'. It was one of my mother's favourite expressions for people she didn't approve of or agree with. It's such a British (and Australian!) trait to make fun of new ideas that are poorly understood that I can imagine the good doctor's name being used as an insult for his new ideas.
@@What_I_Think_Happened Scholarly , authoritative yes... imaginative, not really. I proposed a word recently - polyposia - that was used in 18th century medical texts, but didn't get a reply!
Great show as usual. How about covering Dr. S. Weir Michell, the 19th century physician considered the father of neurology. He pioneered the rest cure for neurasthenic & hysteria. My interest comes from the fact during the American civil he diagnosed soldiers with a painful neurological condition now known as complex regional pain syndrome. I was diagnosed with it and 1986 & just like during the Civil War, there’s no known cure. I learned about neuroplasticity in 2010 and by retraining my brain I was able to get off of fentanyl, and now I live a vital and pain-free life. During the 30+ years I struggled with it every doctor I met would quote “It was first described by Dr. S. Weir Mitchell in the civil war. “ After hearing that so often I’m interested in Dr. Mitchell’s life.
Interesting although I thought it was the doctor himself who was mad when I saw the title. Would you be attracted to making a mini-documentary on the Scottish anatomist John Hunter who had a practice in London. Not really a notable psychiatrist/ neurologist but a man of immense curiosity with a dark side - so much so that Robert Louis Stevenson used him and his London home as one of the inspirations for his novella: The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

This channel deserves so much attention than it gets, thank you for what you do! We appreciate your knowledge.
Glad you enjoy it! Perhaps you can use your divine influence to increase the views!🙂
Dr. Battie, was a Doctor ahead of his time , thank goodness for his patients. Many thanks , for the fascinating videos , Professor Yorston.
Thank you - I'm always happy when someone watches one of my less celebrity focussed videos.
@@professorgraemeyorston, your stories of the history of mental health , are all excellent. Many thanks.
I have learnt so much from just a week of watching your channel.
Thank you, glad you're enjoying them.

I'm so glad we no longsr call any mental health hospitals as mad houses
It may not seem like it at times, but there has been some progress in 200 years.

Thanks, it makes sense, but sadly the Oxford English Dictionary isn't impressed and doesn't link the word to Dr Battie!

Thank you, yes he is on my radar - so far it looks like the poets are more popular in terms of views, but he dabbled in both poetry and medicine!
Love your videos!
