I got a red eared slider when I was 7 from a pet store in British Colombia, I’m now 21 and he’s almost the size of a dinner plate and absolutely thriving. When I got him the pet store owner said they will only live about 8-10 years but now with a 14 year old red eared slider who my vet said is still a young-in I’ve found out they can actually live up to there 40-50’s if properly cared for. He’s my lucky turtle lol.

Hey so I have a quick question I’m getting the basking area for my turtle you have but I on have one heat lamp I was just gonna put a underwater led light inside the tank to light up so you think anything bad will happen to my turtle of the heat lamp is only on the basking area? Like shell rot or anything like that?

Does the uvb and heat light dont damage the turtle topper with the heat?
For hob filters do I need to run the water all the way to the output of the filter? I bought the emperor 400 and it doesn’t want to pump water. I have the water right to the intake since I have a pvc basking area inside the tank. It also makes a grinding noise even though I filled it with water.
I wanna get the basking doc that u have but I’m not allowed to fill up my tank all the way or even almost half way so I don’t think it would work. I have the floating basking doc but I’m not a fan of it. Any suggestions?

My female RES that i just got seems to poop white little pebbles and that has me a tad concerned. it's been difficult to get a straight answer about this as these questions are usually asked in forums, and you know how that goes. Turtle Girl! My kids and I are loving your videos, thank you! We just adopted a 5 year old red eared slider who was living in a 5 gallon tank!!!!! Awful. We put her in a 34 gallon long and after only 8 days we are upgrading her to a 40 gallon tall- she is doing so well! I have the same double basking light set up and turtle topper-. Your light seems set directly on the topper- is it ok with the heat? The plastic won't melt? I would love to do this! Thank you so much for all of your helpful advice!
Great video as always! I had a thought though about the white led strip you have on the right, could you somehow fasten it underneath the topper? That way it wouldn't be so blinding for Hoku!

I've tried twice and the damn things will just float and not do what they are supposed to, so my RESliders just move it and send it against the glass walls which made me afraid they would break it so i removed it ...got a vid about that?

So I took a scoop of my water from my turtle tank and it was clear and I realized I forgot to rinse off my drift wood because my tank is yellow kinda not like a dark green or anything but I was wondering causes of discoloration, soon I’m going to be doing a water change and any good toys for turtles ?

Hello , I’m trying to make sure my turtle can reach his basking area but I heard you said you use rubber Mat ( that’s for dishes ) , how did you get it to not float up from the ramp ? I created my own basking area with an egg crate from home depo so it has holes in it .

Hey! So I have the same basking platform for my red ear slider and she has he basking light on top, do you also us a uva bulb? Does it matter where that is placed? I know I can’t place both lamps on that type of basking platform.
Both the heat and uvb bulb should be above the basking area, as it mimics the sun. You can use a light stand to hang both bulbs over the basking area :)

you should have your lights on for 10-12 hours a day. i turn mine on at 9 am and turn it off at 9 pm. hopefully this helps! i also post turtle care videos if you are interested

I might have missed it, did you use polyurethane on the the plywood? If not, add a coat to avoid the mold. Thanks for another great video?

I have the exact same tank topper for my slider. (Thank you, by the way, for showing me how you retrofitted the tank with the piece of wood so that you could continue to use the platform!)
I noticed that you are using the double-dome light fixture on top of your tank topper. I am thinking about upgrading to that same fixture/arrangement, but I’m concerned about the fixture melting the plastic topper. Have you noticed any melting of the plastic? Also, do you mind me asking what UVB bulb (UV rating and wattage) you are using, as well as the heating bulb you use? Considering the fact that I have the exact same tank topper/platform, the distance from the platform to the bulb would be the same for me as it is for you.

I've never had issues with melting...I've been using reptisun 10.0 bulbs...I think they're 13 watts? And a halogen bulb for heating although admittedly I can't recall the wattage at the moment

I have 3 turtles and they were getting along pretty well until I get them there tank, the female has been attacking my other two ( which I assume are boys) they both have nipped tails and she bites their legs now. What should I do??
people also have this issue, its pretty common sadly. turtles are unpredictable and can get along and then suddenly will not like having tankmates. separating them would be the best option. I'm hoping this wont happen to my turtles later on
Looks great! Im running a similar set up in my 65g... Where did you find the lighting timer? I could really use that, its a struggle worrying about maintaining the timing of my lights!
I think I bought my timer at Walmart...you can find them all sorts of places....general stores, hardware stores, online, etc ;)
I got mine at Walmart for $6 has 2 outlets
you can find a pretty decent one by zoo med brand found in pet smart or petco! i have it and it has been running great for awhile now

I started with a tiny slider that someone was selling. I knew I'd give it a better home than the other people around. So, is it better to start with a small tank and move up? I just set her up in a 90 gallon, because it's what I already have.
Raphael I would recommend if you do end up using the 90 gallon to make sure there is enough light and decorations for him or her to grab on to and not filling it more than about 6 inches with a big basking rock 😊good luck

i have a ? i have turtles and their tank is so dirty after a week i don’t feed them in there tank either what filter do you suggest i use for a 40 gallon? and he is still a baby we will upgrade him to a bigger tank once he is bigger
I prefer canister filters (I've used a fluval fx4 and a penn plax cascade previously) and have also used the aquaclear hang on back power filters.

Hey I was wondering what were the measurements of the plywood you cut so the basking area can stay on top of the tank because I currently have the same problem and I’m using egg crate currently but it’s not very stable
Just measure the bottom frame of your tank and add one inch to both sides (width/length)

nope, I don't use any additives or chemicals, if that's what you mean. I just do my consistent water changes and try to the curtain closed to block direct sunlight :)
Hey question. I just got a baby red ear slider about 3 days ago. I have the basking area set up for him with a uba and uvb light but he won't eat .. everytime I try to feed him he just hides in his shell..(I feed him the way you showed, put him in a different tank with water so he can dissolve the food) then when I put him back in the take after him not eating he just swims back to the basking area and stays there until i try to feed him again.. am I doing something wrong ?
since it is a new turtle, it might just seem like he's just adjusting to his new home. I also had this issue with my new turtle before but it took about a week to where he started eating in a separate container. In the first week, I would just try to feed him in his tank and let him find the pellets! good luck bro

I was wondering what’s the best filter and additional lighting to get. My turtles poops a lot. It’s hard to keep the tank clean. He loves to eat as well.

50 gallon capacity for filtration, but times your turtles shell length by 10 and that’s how many gallons you need. Get a filter that does 2-3x your tank size

depending on the season, between 10-12 hours

You can really use any regular analog timer from walmart or target. ;)

Hello! I had a question for you! I love your video's btw! You helped me get started saving my turtle as my first pet a week ago from this Sunday from a very bad situation from previous owner. I just wanted to make sure I have the right wattage for my tank! You said 125w is what you have and wanted to make sure I don't need more than that for my 40 gal breeder tank? It's been a struggle getting him well and started with expenses. I'm new to all of this and want to thank you for all your time on RUclips you share! 🥰
Hey Heather! Most recommend approx 3-5 watts per gallon, hence the 125 watt heater. This ensures your heater isn't overworked :)

try to avoid giving them dried shrimp, krill, and bloodworms. it stinks but only try to offer pellets, it will have to eventually it since it will be hungry. and dont worry if ur turtle wont eat it, try the next day! (turtles can go for awhile without eating food)

Question: How do you "treat" wood that you find???? I have a river nearby there are some awesome wood pieces.
You can boil it, you can use bleach but make sure you rinse it REALLY well.
