I'm not into any metal and very little prog but animals as leaders from an artistic and atmospheric point of view and from a songwriting point of view have consistently blown my mind nearly every time I come across one of their songs on Pandora. I'm proud to love these guys and I'm thinking about buying this album. And holy shit, the artwork.
Quite a few of their songs have blown me away with the way they start with a theme and evolve it, or introduce new themes. Lipincott is a fantastic example.
Just saw these guys on the weekend live for the second time. I play guitar and was classically trained a a violinist. Watching them I just stand there mouth open thinking 'How in the name of holy fuck do they keep this music together and play like that!?' They are all playing different polyrhythms, everything is doing something different weaving in and out and Tosin is just incredible, he missed like 2 notes in a 1.5 hour set. The level of virtuosity is over 9000.
Saw them live last month. They opened for dream theater. At the end of the show they did a song with dream theater at the Hard Rock. Those two bands put together creates something unreal.
transfixed. by both. nailed it. the anticipation of knowing that it's coming is beautiful. the build from 2:57 on is almost too pleasurable. feels like i need to add some discomfort into my life to allow myself to listen to it.
some People say that animals as leaders' music is just technical and has no Emotion at all, but for me it carries a lot of emotion. I dont know why People always try to argue about such things. Maybe they are actually kind of impressed and get the need to defend their music taste. But There is no need at all.
Why does it have to be so emotional anyway? Not enough people can appreciate music for what it is, and only want to connect with it in a way that's familiar with them, ala lyricism. Lots of the best music is instrumental stuff like this that's beyond words, and trying to trap it within the confines of human language would be a travesty.
If that's all you want to get out of it. Personally I'm almost mechanically unemotional, but I listen to a shit ton of music by bands like AAL and Rush and Coheed because it's fascinating in a way that can't really be explained by any human terms. "Why does a particular melody/rhythm sound so incredibly good?" "What about a major to minor key transition changes the mood of a song so drastically?" etc. These are important questions, but ones that can't really be answered because we just simply can't fully comprehend the mathematics and science behind them and how they interact with our brain. When you listen to complex progressive music like this and you stop trying to feel and think about deep meanings, and instead kind of lose yourself in the music and marvel in the perfection and purity of the technique and the composition, you come out wishing that you could spend the rest of your life hearing nothing but an endless cascade of different melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. The possibilities of musical composition are literally infinite; the spectrum of human emotion, however, only goes so far. Which is why every song with the exact same theme in genres like pop and country get incredibly old so fast.
Yeah, but "sound good" "fascinating", "you come out wishing", "marvel in the perfection", "the mood" etc. all that seems like the lexical field of feelings and emotions to me ^^ even if you can hardly describe them (that's precisely what makes them emotion and not intellectual thinking). I mean you say you're unemotional but I'm sure you're not, if you really were you wouldn't listen to music ^^
Before you think about torrenting this album for free, just think about Matt, Tosin and Javier sitting in the studio making this album for you, think about how long they've spent trying to figure out how to make you shit ur pants. Then ask yourself if u really cant afford the 10 bucks. This album will last your entire life and make a lot of people wonder why ur head banging in the middle of Walmart. You could also listen to this when you're writing a request letter so that you could be enrolled in your university since you had delinquencies to take care of.
Nate Coombs Dude, if you know Jake Bowen from Periphery, I suggest you take a listen to Jake Bowen's Electronic Project. I don't think that there has ever been a time that I had trouble sleeping while listening to it. If you still can't sleep while listening to it, it's also good for relaxation.
Str8Faced I realised the contradiction :) I finished listening to the song, typed that statement and then went straight back to lying down with eyes closed to listen to the rest of the album.
I think Tosin's solo in this is the best one he's ever composed. It's dark, mysterious, and moody then just fucking explodes into chill inducing bad assery. This is one of their best tracks.
+yung letti I read this comment, was like, "Damn, yeah, it's been a while" and then noticed that this comment was a year old as well. Two years of the Joy of Motion... Seems like no time at all
I'm in the process of learning this song on drums, picked up a stack cymbal too for the song, Matt's a phenomenal drummer no doubt!, the song is a monster, beautiful piece of music 😍
All the tracks ive heard so far have been phenomenal. Its a perfect blend of the past two albums. Self-Titled 2009: Epic melodies, but wasn't organic enough for me...sounded kinda dry and angular at times. Weightless 2011: Sounded fuller with the live drums and wayyy better production, but the songs, save New Eden and David for me, were too "dugga-da-digga-da" for me. Didn't really take me on a journey. But this. This shit right here is da bee's knees. Fuck that. ITS THE WHOLE LEG.
I agree. It's a lovely mix of both albums. What gets me is the drums. In the first album, the bass drum just did not have enough punch for me. In the second, there was a hell of a lot more bass drum, but the cymbals were barely audible. This here is a perfect blend, but not just for the drums, this album is a blend of styles from the Self-Titled and Weightless. /)
Derp McGrahamCracker the drumming in this album is the best in any AAL album by far. very organic not robotic-sounding. matt garstka has feel, groove, and precision. beast. i prefer this style over mere precision-drumming a la Alex Rudinger.

3:52 the way he holds that note without bending it or anything makes it sound so much better! I don't know why when he plays live, he bends it. Just hold it like that and do nothing, that's what keep the tension!
In a way i love that que just holds it but in another way i actually like and a lot when it is in a bend and mostly with vibrato, but whatever, sound awesome in both ways for me... :p
LucasAndAGuitar why don't continue your mindless activity of trolling on videos commented by other 12yo idiots like you, for instance COD or something and leave the comment sections of intelligent, complex music like this free of you immaturity? ;)
Tosin and Javier make my Guitar skill level seem that of a fucking Triangle player, this is insane... I don't even think I'd be able to play in front of these guys haha.
After listening to the album on here, particularly this song. I immediately bought the album. It's amazing from start to finish. I've been waiting for something like this to exist for a very long time. Every song is a journey. This band is incredible.
I've always been of the opinions that weightless didn't even belong in the same league as the first album. I'm already thinking this outclasses even the first.
Joey Emanuele I agree. Their self-titled album brought out emotions quite well for me, while Weightless was more experimental. The JOY of MOTION seems to be a combination of both.
JURGMANDR Once I got used to Weightless it's just as good. The good thing about AAL is their sound progresses. They don't just make stale sounding shit that sounds just like the last album. Each album has it's own sound. That's the best part.
They can be metal, djent, prog or whatever you want to call them. But THAT SOLO has the soul of a blues guitar and it can take me to the exact same places
First heard this masterpiece live at the drum off in Los Angeles at the Nokia theater.. Changed my whole perspective on music in general.. f****** amazing
I'm not sorry The joy of Motion is still the best album AAL has ever produced. It still maintains a high degree of poloyrhythms, odd meters/timings and technicality while still evoking a connectivity of feeling and emotions to the songs.
aal is a band i keep forgetting even exists, but every time i coem back and listen to whatever new (to me) music they have produced, its always fucking stellar
Eh not really, I can think of plenty of really complex pieces that do though. The harmonies in this song are not quite as complex as you may think. The drumming is intricate but the underlying rhythms are pretty simple and have a consistent repeat. It's like a collection of sections from Tool songs but sped-up in that regard.
EvilAlbear To me, Dream Theater are an OK band, very technically proficient, but machine-like and lacking in emotional resonance. Plus, a lot of people hate the singer. I personally think that he has a whiny, hair-metal style that is offputting.

I dont know why but this album cover really makes me feel kinda happy and nostalgic. It's like I could stare at it for ours and end up in some kind of eternal happiness. Really love it
Just getting into this band guys, but I wonder if they were thinking of the concept of "making it rain" when they put that "$" symbol in the title of this song. I can just hear'em now: "We don't actually make it rain in the club; we make it...KA$CADE" =-p
Sam James There's almost no way of getting money directly to the band. Buying through a merch store is perfectly fine because the band has already seen all the initial funds from their album's sales.
I think this song added what I missed from their first albums, which is space. During their first two albums there were many melodic moments cut short where I couldn't fully enjoy the moment, and the drums overpowered the entire thing a bit. I find that there is so much more room for imagination in this song. The moments were you can imagine and experience during this song are so much better captured, and last longer. I absolutely love this song, definitely takes me places!
This is another one of those songs that I know i will play it so much that I will wear it out. I catch myself playing the chorus over and over in my head and I just have to hear it again.
legend has it that Matt Garstka's heart beats in 17/16 time signature

This hits me so well. Haven't heard metal that inspires and pumps me up like this in years. Thank you!
I swear for a moment it said Ke$ha
oh god, that would be something.
aaaahhh!!!
new genre, slutcore
Marsh the Darsh ill take it!
Master Pigoo it woud basically just be kesha trying to cram an 8 string guitar up herself while misha mansoor records the sounds
I dont know why but this album cover really makes me feel kinda happy and nostalgic. It's like I could stare at it for ours and end up in some kind of eternal happiness. Really love it
They should totally make a theme song for Deus Ex and StarCraft
Had so much fun covering this song!
Man, the vocals are really something right?
+Crusty GymSock They were using auto tune...
I saw them lip syncing at a concert...
Say it aint so!
Crusty GymSock lmao.
Dude, Tosin Abasi is clearly singing here, do you really not hear it?
***** Matt Garstka has a beautiful voice, almost made me cry.
A true master piece of music. Unmatched musicianship. A true audible treat to my ears and soul. Thank You!
4:02 gave me goosebumps..love this band :)
That solo and the buildup to it is mind blowing...
Yes.
Your album yesterday, this today, when will the madness end?!? lol
....and my musical reality has been changed once again. Thanks AAL.
fo real doe Tosins new mixtape is pretty fire
this is the whitest comment on the page
I agree with your feeling but i hate the way you put it into words.
really enjoy this album. never heard anything like it before. 2yrs later still love the complex sound.
Just getting into this band guys, but I wonder if they were thinking of the concept of "making it rain" when they put that "$" symbol in the title of this song. I can just hear'em now: "We don't actually make it rain in the club; we make it...KA$CADE" =-p
That opening guitar does it for me. Sounds like perfection.
Such a great opener.
Yes it's here it's finally here. So far it sounds great. Definitely going to pick this up
I want to give the band money for this album. I don't want to give Google or Apple my money for this album though :/.
im sure you can get it from the band website on cd, if its on cd the songs wil be better quality than any mp3 anyways
Nope thats my point exactly you can't.
Yeah I'm in the UK so not ordering off of there. Also, I said I want to give the band money, not some merch store.
Sam James There's almost no way of getting money directly to the band. Buying through a merch store is perfectly fine because the band has already seen all the initial funds from their album's sales.
Go to a show and give em a tip
This album is Amazeballs, as expected. I love the throwback 70's synth
una patada en la cara de música. otro nivel.
At a quick glance I thought the description said "Catch Animals as Leaders headlining North Korea"
This is another one of those songs that I know i will play it so much that I will wear it out. I catch myself playing the chorus over and over in my head and I just have to hear it again.
My dog just pissed on the floor because he needed to go out but this song came on and I refuse to stop an AAL song before it's complete. Worth it
This is good stuff.. These days you can listen to great music 24/7 for the rest of your life with no repeats 'cuz there's just so damn much..
very progressive of a record label to upload their bands album to youtube :)
thumbs up :)
(I am actually planning on buying this btw...)
one of the greatest pieces of music ever composed
