As a guitarist that care more about song and riff writing than guitar shredding I love this type of content.

You are a very good teacher, and there are not many lessons that are focused on rhythm metal. looking forward to more!

Really nice video. I love your point at the end there. Technically, you can't have a power chord on the tonic of a Locrian scale because of the flat-5. And that's the beauty of the point your making about Music Theory being a guide. It's like going off-road; if you travel from your home to your destination all by off-road, it'll take you forever and not all routes might be fun, but if you travel through roads and just pick good spots to go off-road, you'll reach your destination quick enough and have a great time doing it.
It feels kinda like it's own thing, this "power chord theory". Also saw a video that analyzes Linkin Park and Nirvana songs and they employ the same thing wherein they could care less about the scale and they just turn all notes to power chords, regardless of whichever is supposed to be diminished. Both Kurt and Chester even sing melody lines that make it ambiguous if the song is in a minor or major key because they sing both the minor and major 3rd within the same melody/hook.

Very well put in a practical manner for the riffers out there! C# is such a nice sounding tuning, i was introduced to it back in the day with Misery Index - Dissent EP (or whatever you call a 4 song mini album lol), but yeah man... the riffs on those songs sounded so mean and in your face. Been keeping a guitar in that tuning since then.

Nice thanks for the introduction to Locrian. Didn't know Locrian was good for metal. I am still learning and have been doing what you suggested to write riffs, but so far mainly with the Natural minor, Harmonic minor, or Phrygian. Can't wait to try out some Locrian.

Awesome video. This is so helpful To me as I suck at improvisation and riff writing ..I know I need more theory, but I really like how you showed how to write inside mode, and then break the “rules” and throw in notes (G#) that didn’t belong but sounded cool. Maybe do a series of videos, one for each mode?

Ok this has been hidden from me !!!! I have been playing since the early 80's and slamming my head against a brick wall. I can not believe what I just did and all it took was tuning down to c # , I can now write the sounds in my head, I was always told to stay away from the Locrian mode now I know why it is the holy Grail 😂 and it is so easy to play I believe this video was a life changing experience for me.

I’m currently looking heavily into theory. This was great. My lead guitarist (I’m rhythm) is well studied and I am definitely slowing down our progress. He’s more of a prog metal guy (I’m more thrash) and we actually work well together writing but it takes me too long to wrap my head around what he’s saying. I enjoy the challenge and look forward to this adventure

Seems kinda dumb that cause your in drop c you want all your songs to be in that key. It’s not that hard to palm mute a song on a different fret. Then when you do hit that open c it’s gonna sound more powerful, and changing keys in songs sound cool, you certainly shouldn’t always start out in the key of c , how many bands do that 90 percent of the time in metal , really boring
