    TRANSCRIPT
Hey, guys. Welcome to engVid. Is it a lot harder for you to speak English around native speakers than it is to speak English with other learners or people from other countries who are speaking English as a second language? So, do you forget your words, do you lose all your confidence when you're speaking to someone from England, for example? If your answer is yes, then I have some advice for you so that you can speak with more confidence around native speakers.
I think the most important point, where I want to start, is that: Don't look at the native speaker as if they're up here, and better than you in any way, because sadly, that is why a lot of people get awkward and stop talking around native speakers because they think: "The native speaker's English is just so good, I'm going to sound like an idiot next to them." And that's why they close down and go quiet. So, the next time you're around a native speaker, speak to the native speaker on a level with them. It means: "You're here, I'm here, I'm not looking up at you, you're not looking down at me", and that is a really important step to bringing that confidence to you when you're speaking around the native speaker.
The next important point is: Some people are confident speaking English around other learners or other non-native speakers because they think: "When I'm speaking to this person, they don't know if I'm making mistakes, so I can just say this, say that, say this, and it doesn't matter if... In fact, it doesn't matter if I make mistakes because the other person doesn't know; therefore, I feel relaxed." But the problem when you speak to a native speaker, then, is that: "Oh no, they are going to know all the mistakes that I'm making. They're going to notice that I'm saying it wrong. It's... I... I don't want to speak because they're going to think that my English is so bad." Well, it is... It is true that a native speaker, if they're analyzing your language and watching your language and if they care about your language, they can notice: You made a mistake there, you made a mistake there, you made a mistake there. But the reality of communication is that most people are not thinking about that kind of stuff when they talk to you; they are communicating in the moment, they're thinking about themselves, what they're going to say. They're not watching you and your language closely. The native speaker just doesn't care about your language that much. The native speaker doesn't care about your mistakes as much as you think about your mistakes and worry about your mistakes.
Speaking as a native speaker, now, as a native speaker teacher, when I'm talking to someone, I have to switch on and concentrate if I want to listen for people's mistakes. It takes effort and it takes energy. And if I'm concentrating on listening to the words to find mistakes, it means that I'm not really in the middle of a conversation with that person. Instead, I'm just listening to: Are they making mistakes? So in my normal communication, my normal social communication with people, of course I'm not listening closely for mistakes, because I'm having a conversation. It's so far away from my mind and it's not important to me at all. So I hope, as an example, that gives you some confidence to think that: "Oh yeah, maybe native speakers don't care about my mistakes that much."
Which brings me to the next point, which is: Even if you are making mistakes, is it really that important? So instead of having this way of looking at yourself when you make a mistake: "Oh, it's terrible, it's really bad. I have to... I have to learn more. I have to avoid it." Try instead to develop and grow in yourself the ability to make those mistakes with what I would call vulnerability.

I'm a native speaker of English, but I can't speak any other language at all. If you can speak your own language, plus English, no matter how imperfectly, you are way, way ahead of most native English speakers, who speak English only. So don't put yourself down --- you're doing great! If you make a mistake, so what? Just smile and say, "Sorry, my English isn't perfect yet, but I'm working on it."

Agreed! I work at a place with loads of foreign students. They all have at least two languages sometimes more. English people tend to have only English. So don't ever be intimidated by English people because we are bad language learners.
Also, don't worry about 100% perfect pronunciation. I know students (for example a Russian guy) who speaks with a super heavy accent but his vocabulary range and grammatical complexity is more advanced than the average English speaker. I told him this and he was very pleased!!

but (most of the) native speakers dont give a shit... they re full of arrogance and judging you as 'not being able to speak properly'. this is why i quitted learning english and kicked off this horrible ''linguistic imperialism''.

    • @franksimmons9092
      @franksimmons9092 5 лет назад +4

Or, you can say, "sorry, my English is not perfect and neither is yours." Besides, what does the teacher mean by "native speakers"? This question has been bothering me for years, and so far nobody has given me a convincing answer. I have met native speakers who speak English horribly and I think no foreign speaker should be willing to imitate them.

Oh God, when I'm around native English speakers, my brain shuts down and I forgot the entire language and I start to panic! I can understand everything that they are saying but I just can't respond.
This guy walked up to me in Tesco the other day, he wanted my help to find coffee but I couldn't really help him even though I knew exactly where he can find what he's looking for. I wanted to tell him to turn right at the end of the aisle we were in and then look for the sign that says "tea" and he can find coffee in that aisle as well. But I forgot the words "aisle", "sign","right" and even "tea" which sounds almost the same in my language as it does in English! So in the end I just pointed to the general direction of the tea/coffee aisle and didn't say a word. Not a single word! I felt so embarrassed! And I was afraid he might come back and ask more questions so I left the store as fast as I could!

wow, not a nice situation to find yourself in. maybe you could try to talk to yourself in your mind in English just before you go into the store to get your subconscious mind to "think" in English. Or just have little stock of phrases in your head like: "I'm sorry I don't know", "I'm not sure" "try the next aisle" .

Hi, Jade. Thanks for making this video. From my experience, native English speakers are quite kind and patient when I talk to them. Just like you said, they are not analyzing my language but try to communicate with me. On the contrary, I feel much more nervous when I talk in front of my colleagues who are non-native English speakers because they do judge your accent, word choice or grammar lol

When I speak with one native speaker everything is fine. My accent is quite good, usually everybody understands what I am talking about, if something isn't clear for me I just ask. The problem is when I'm among few native speakers. I can't understand anything then. They speak to fast, use some slang expressions, to many phrasal verbs etc.
I thing most of them are aware that they have to speak different way when they talk to somebody who is not an English speaker. When they are in a group they just forget it. I don't judge them, that's just the way it is, but in that kind of situations I lose my confidence.

I understand your struggle. I have native level fluency in English, however it’s not my first language. It’s my 3rd language, albeit the one I’ve mastered most. I make it a point to never use slang in my speech and try to keep the language as standard as possible. People don’t understand how hard it is for non natives to keep up and it’s just basic politeness and consideration to slow it down around them.

Im living in Manchester and as a spanish person i can say that most of them are so nice and they try to understand you even if you dont pronunciate each word properly , they obioualy know that you are s foreigner but some peopl e dont care and if you dont say the correct words making the correct sounds they wont probably understand you, they wont make any effort as a receptor of the speech, thx a lot for ur videos they are quite helpful.

This actually happened to me. I once met a Welsh guy at a hostel and he started speaking with me in a super fast, slangish native english, and I was absolutely lost for the first hour or so. Then I got used to it and could in some way match him. But I do usually get this feeling of nervousness with native speakers. Jade could you do a video explaining some words to use as synonyms or words that are more complex and show a better knowledge of the language, so as not to be always coming down to simple short quick words? As to make our speech sound more complete and "full", with longer and stronger words, rather than simple primary school words. Words that are used by native english speakers and that portray a cultured way of speech. Thank you! Great as usual!

This is certain. The best way to learn English is to be with native english speakers 24/7 always speaking English. and dont be afraid to ask them to please slow down or please repeat that. But even listening regularly on your own with attention to English music lyrics, radio or TV dialogue, movies etc can also help.

Wow, I listened to you on this video and thought you were describing exactly what happens to me when I'm in front of native speakers, in my case, I'm believe I'm too hard on myself most of the time and that makes me try to be perfect, which leads to me anxiety and feeling of paranoia that I'm forgetting the language or some absurd thing like that. I think the root of the problem is that I'm insecure and I tend to idealise native speakers to the point of thinking, like you said, they are way above my level. Thank you for your videos. Keep up the good work.

Thanks a lot for the advices, teacher Jade. Though I´m not nervous anymore to do it, I remember I really was, which reminds me of my first time. I was eighteen and worked as a toll booth agent when this car made a wrong turn and ended up on a lane for special vehicles. I was asked to go talk to the driver. The more I was approaching the car, the more nervous I was getting. They were American and looked more nervous than me because they were lost, which made me take a deep breath and ask them to speak slowly (they spoke too fast!). It was such an amazing experience, because as soon as they knew that someone there spoke their language, they were all okay and calm. Then I knew where they were headed to and gave them directions. It was an unforgettable experience! I love, love, love English ;)

Hello Jade, I've been binge-watching your videos from both channels and I must say that I like your work. But besides being a great teacher, it's been interesting to learn about the non-business Jade, the one who admits to not liking hugging, the one who said in 2017 that she found it hard to continue to make videos, and so on. The Jade Joddle channel came as a surprise to me because you're so personable in it and shares your vulnerabilities fearlessly. Thanks Jade for this video.
It's a real step to pass when you learn a foreign language that talking with native-speakers. And I think that, because english is so present all around the world, it's even more stressing to speak to en English native-speaker.
If I could give a little tip, as a not English native-speaker myself who had to pass this step, it's to keep in mind that you are not and will never be a native-speaker. So, somewhere, trying to sound like a native-speaker is a lost cause.
Instead, it could be better to introduce yourself as a foreigner, trying to speak this wonderful foreign language that you're currently learning. I personnaly experienced this : when you're honest, people are usually willing to help you. So, not try to hide your accent, ask for help if you need and go ahead : try.
I'd even say that some foreign accents are really classy. For example, I'm a French native-speaker myself and, a lot of times, I met English people who were like "oh my god, French accent is so classy" (while I was thinking : "oh my go, I adore your british / irish / scottish accent"). I recently visited the US (texas), im from mexico, I had some opportunities (well actually lots bud I didnt take all of them) to talk to some native speakers, and I found out that almost all of them were kind, and able to help me if i did not understand, and their enlgish sometimes was so fast for me, but in other cases it was not, Was a good experience, and if you get a misstake its not gonna be the end of the world.

Hi Jade, Many thanks for this video I came across, totally by chance, where you explained in such a simple and nice way how to deal with this kind of anxiety while speaking to or in the presence of native English speakers. It is extremely relevant for people like us and I really liked the way you analysed and pointed out the fear we have in us that try to stop us when we want to express ourselves. Thanks again for the encouragement and the valuable tips. Take care!

Oh my god you succinctly described how I felt during my last trip to UK. It took about two days for me to feel comfortable and confident enough to converse in the language. May I know what do native speakers feel when they speak with fluent/non-fluent English speakers? Thank you for this generous and informative video 💚. Loves from Malaysia 🇲🇾

Thank you so much for this video, I have the same issues you discussed and never understood the reason! I currently prefer emails and written communication with my native English speakers coworkers because I always thought they would be watching for my mistakes, especially pronunciation mistakes! I am going to apply your advices from now on. And again, thanks a lot for this. Cheers!

Thanks for your tips, Jade!! It's exactly my problem. I have some native speakers friends but I don't talk much to them because they use a lot hard words, phrases, idioms or expressions in conversations. So I've felt if I ask too many times, they'll be bored and tired for answering too much. I also feel it would be easier when taking with non-native speakers because they often use sth more simple like me. Anw, I know if I want to improve my English, I should try to make more conversations with native speakers. So, I'll try to apply ur tips soon. :)
Thanks again and hope you'll keep doing ur job greatly.. :)

Hi Jade. I am a 21yo Italian native speaker and I have moved in the UK 2 years ago. I came across your RUclips channel and I find your videos really helpful to practise my English as I have literally started watching them every day! I had a quick question for you. I have been thinking to buy your accent training pack but I am not sure if that will help me to reduce my Italian/British accent? I work/study during the week so I am constantly surrounded by an English-speaking environment. The problem I have is that as soon as I get home I tend to speak in my native language with my family. My listening is really good and I don't have problems to understand people. However, I am really keen to improve my speaking skills and increase my overall confidence when speaking in public. What would be the easiest way to reduce my Italian accent and gain a more natural British accent? Thanks in advance. :)

Million thanks for your clip. This is hit me for the moment and useful for reality as I and a lot of people who use and practicing to speak English in several ways, and many time I have to communicate with English native speaker I lose confidence, so this vdo it's powerful.
    Cheers!!

Last Saturday I was invited to join the international picnic. I came there being so excited and happy, I was sure that I'll meet many people and I'll spend few hours chatting. But when I came it turned out that all people who were there were Aussies... And I was only one non-native speaker. I was so anxious and so unconfident. That was terrible experience. I forgot to mention that it was happening in Finland...
I was not able to say anything...
I came back home absolutely devastated and spent an hour crying.
My decision for that moment was "never again I'll open my mouth"
I still feel so uncomfortable recalling that day...
Thank you for your advices. Maybe someday I'll be able to step over my previous experience and make an effort to communicate again

I used to have this issue, years ago, I founded harder to understand natives then other foreigners and felt a bit intimidated even because I've always been quite articulate in Italian and used my speaking skills as a business card, therefore it was difficult to speak English with natives for fear of losing one of my "strongest points". It takes humility: knowing that, as good as you can get, it'll never be enough and cope with that. Let's just go on improving because English is such a universal language that will come handy even if one doesn't travel at all.
