Introduced me to Sage though, so not all bad, in the end.
Oh, he's not so bad these days, there's just so much more competition these days, that Doug just doesn't stand out quite as much as he use to.

I've never seen this movie, but at 11:16 or so when the Han Solo character picks up the robot girl, he's picking her up and carrying her because she's made of metal and thus provides armor. You can see several shots deflect off her.

This movie was a part of my childhood that I remember fondly.... my mother and I bonded over this movie... because we found it on a random station at midnight one night and watched the whole thing laughing at how horrible it was...

So let me get this straight. Guy goes around the entire time with magical sword of destiny. Guy loses magical sword of destiny to the evil overlord. Guy realizes he has his own magical sword of destiny within him and uses it to defeat the evil overlord and restore peace to the world.
Xenoblade Chronicles is literally a ripoff of Starchaser.

A young teen and his village are forced to mine rocks and minerals underground, believing they will never emerge. A group of teens rebel against their leaders, and make it to the surface. The first things seen are robots with animal pieces. Oh, and both have villains ruling over all humans.

You know that the robot shielded them from laser blasts, right? In fact it WAS convenient.
The "dramatic" reveal was hilarious for me when I watched this (in 3D no less) back in 1985. I mean... THE... VILLAIN... IS... ON... THE... POSTER!!! Same outfit and everything, without the mask.
I mean, pot was still really popular in movie theaters in those days, but I don't think even then the short term memory loss would make you forget about seeing the poster when you bought your ticket and all.
Only one version. The other, which I think was the main one, shows him with the mask on.
It's kinda eery how they predict the Episode 1 get-sliced-in-half-and-fall-down-an-abyss move. WTH?

Wait the scene with Orin cutting through the door, the scene where they sneak on board one of the Saigon's ships, and the scene where Orin pulls himself up from the edge of a cliff and cuts Saigon in half. George Lucas might have actually ripped off StarChaser in Episode 1, because Obi Wan and Qui Gon sneak on board a droid drop ship, and Obi Wan uses the force to pull himself up from a cliff and cuts Darth Maul in half. Did George Lucas actually see this movie, and actually like it?

In a strange twist, the Solo movie also features a bizarre Human and Robot interspecies relationship.
With how this movie called the slicing a door with a sword from episode 1, starchaser really did foresee what Star Wars would become.
One bit of pointless trivia: This was animated in South Korea, and they were the first to put out a theatrical cartoon using vector graphics printed using a pen plotter, almost a year before Disney's The Great Mouse Detective, Oliver and Company (and Little Mermaid and Lion King) did the same.
That was pretty hot shit for the time, it would be another 3 years until Streamline Pictures exposed us to the horror that was Lensman.
So in a sense, you have to appreciate the ambition of the studio that put this together, even by S Korean standards at the time, this was a big budget flick (I think they had Michael Ironside playing the villain, you could literally watch this and add up all the more expensive shots to tell where the budget went).
I mean, imagine if Yellow Submarine was released today instead of 45 years ago. Everyone would be shrugging and saying "What is this, another Regular Show ripoff?".
I saw this once as a kid after Star Wars and LOVED it .

I remember seeing this in middle school at the drive in as a double feature with Rock and Rule, probably in 1985. At the time, I thought they were both amazing. Rewatching Starchaser, no it's not amazing, but I also didn't find myself wanting to die. It was fine. Seemed like an extended episode of a Hanna Barbera sci fi, like Herculoids or Thundarr.

I actually attended the world premiere of the 3D version in Annecy Animation Festival back I'm the early 2000s, as the movie didn't actually get shown in 3D originally, they only had the Left side version of the movie distributed at the time.
What was the reaction from the audience?

The animation for this movie is actually pretty cool. If the story and characters weren't such a painfully obvious ripoff of Star Wars then maybe it could have been decent.

Considering how many years it’s been since this episode was posted, I think it’s safe to assume a live action remake of this movie is thankfully not gonna happen.

I haven't seen this movie and have no intention of doing so, but I do have my own theory as to why the sword's blade is so inconsistent in regards to its functionality. I get the impression that the blade only functions when it's used with the intent of doing something heroic or anything with the end goal of doing good.
The Han Solo in this looks like George Peppard's "Space Cowboy" character in Roger Corman's "Battle Beyond the Stars" (1980).
The guy who wrote and directed this, Jeffrey Scott, was a Scientologist, and he sneaked a number of Scientology words/concepts into the film: "Marcabrian", "meat body", a space tyrant ("Xenu"), healing by touching people ("touch assists"), "Kha-Khan" (A title for people who get results; L. Ron Hubbard stole it from the Mongols.) He did similar stuff writing scripts for the `80s "Muppet Babies" and "Dungeons & Dragons" cartoons.

I agree. The various... let's call them lifts/references from Star Wars and the simplistic plot aside (evil robots wanting to destroy humanity, yawn), it's at least pretty to look at and has a decent soundtrack. The voice acting isn't half bad, particularly Anthony De Longis (Blade from the live-action He-Man) really doing a good job as Zygon.
