  • I finally got around to 're-digitizing' this episode. I haven't really looked at this reel prior to this recording with two exceptions, mainly because of how raggedy and beaten up this print is. I also had a very hard time trying to deliver the visual recording for the "digitization" since it took a while to actually get my camera in sync with the projector's frame rate (a problem I've been going through for a few days now -_-). The projector also started to slow down progressively, causing some flickering to occur, becoming more apparent as the reel progressed. Because I never really watched this reel a lot, I really paid attention to it when I made the digitization, and that's when I noticed how...um... 'peculiar' this show is. It's well-intentioned, after all, it is tackling racial equality, but there were some parts that rubbed me the wrong way. Top it off with some corny acting (as if I was expecting some Emmy-winning performances from some random Rankin/Bass show barely anyone remembers), it made for a very... 'interesting' watch. I had a friend over when I made the visual recording of the 'digitization'. He wasn't watching the reel with me but he did come out every so often to do some things. He heard a lot of the lines here out of context, and the faces he made wondering what the hell I was indulging in was truly priceless!
    By the way, apologies for the audio being out of sync at a few points. Some portions of audio on the reel were printed like that :/

    Growing up in Oakland, we were so proud of Morrie Turner and his Wee Pals. I met Mr. Turner in 1980-81 at the dedication of a new recreation center, I was covering the event for my high school paper. He drew on the back of my program, Nipper shouting "Stop the Presses" with a notepad and pencil. I still have that program.

      Morrie Turner came to my Palo Alto elementary school in the late 60s /early 70s to speak to us and sign autographs.

    God i remember when this episode first aired
    I was 8 years old when this first aired on ABC
    On Sunday in 1972 on this episode they sang a song about uncle Tom now he gone once and for all
    I wish you had the episode which feature a song called
    Look at the world you're in
    Reach up into the sky without a wonder why
    Reach down and stop tat spin and look at the world you're in look at at the world you're in.
    I went to school with a kid just like Ralph
    Ironically his name was Richard but Richard had long blond hair and blue eyes but in personality he was Ralph
    He was a bully like Ralph.
    This brings back so many childhood memories
    I'd live to see all the episodes of this cartoon again

      "Uncle Tom" was well ahead of its time and audience. Still know the whole album by heart, once I found it on here!

      That song you mentioned from one of the episodes was “Don’t Let the World Go By” and it was featured on the record album.

    This is the only Rakin-Bass cartoon that based on the “Wee Pals” comic strip characters created by Morrie Turner and published by King Feature Syndicate Inc.

    • @anthonysimpsonanygoround8749
      @anthonysimpsonanygoround8749 Год назад +3

      The original strip also included a few other ethnicities plus a few kids with disabilities. Morrie Turner lived from 1923-2014 and one of his inspirations for the strip was “Peanuts” by Schulz.

      Joan Gardner was heard ten years earlier in UPA’s “Gay Purr-ee”as Jeunesse, the lady from Paris who tried to get Marie to leave Provence (Julie Bennett was Marie’s voice, the lady who owned Mewsette ). Joan Gardner did a lot of work in animation voiceover, including more roles for UPA including Tiny Tim and The Ghost of Christmas Past in “Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol” and later for Rankin-Bass as Tanta in “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” .

    My recollection is that Kid Power launched with a "movie" that had a slightly different theme song, and that the movie aired in the summer of 1972. I haven't been able to confirm this with any online sources but this should be fairly easy to research for those who have access to TV Guides from that summer.

    • @TheProjectionistsVault
      @TheProjectionistsVault  Год назад

      that would be interesting to see if it's true. i doubt it'd be kept in viacom's syndie package (like this episode), unless that tv movie also doubled as the show's actual first episode.

      Rather amazingly, there's a soundtrack LP for the series from The Curbstones and a 45 for the title song. Neither has the theme I recall from the movie that I'm trying to track down, which largely has the same lyric but slightly different melody. @@TheProjectionistsVault
