What a lovely man Steve was. I have watched this video before but so genuine and great advice. No one will ever replace Steve on RUclips as far as I am concerned. Still the very best. Trevor.
I like the idea of the indvidual trays to seperate plants by variety so I don't get confused. That'll help me loads, because last year my helpful 2 year old collected all my plant lables back in for me. "You left these outside Mummy. I tidied them up for you." 🤦♀
Great video. Im not using lights either this year as I need to keep costs down, However, I do have a solar system for the house being installed Feb 1st so if they are required I will its better than not having plants. Its rained and been dark here constantly since Nov cant even get in the garden yet. Great video Steve
Winter weather can drag on for what seems like an age at times, gloomy and wet is the worst of it I think, hope it brightens a little for you to get goinf on it soon Tony...Steve...🙂
Great Steve, but without a greenhouse with power like you have, we will need grow lights. I have an allotment and I'm in a flat, so grow lights are the only way I can start my peppers, aubergines and tomatoes early. Nice detailed video thought, great seeing the shots about the making of the hot cable bench.
Depending on your budget, there are nice little combos of photovoltaic cells and batteries for at least minimal power needs. Usually called "balcony power plant" or similar names. Of course if you only need like a fan and a thermometer/hygrometer with a little automation, that can happen with a relatively small setup. A lot is possible these days, can make it really comfortable.
I went from having _unlimited_ power!!!!_ to not even having electricity in my part of the house within a few months and have had to adapt my over two hundred garden and house plant collection to this issue. Also, I'm two zones colder! It has been quite a learning experience and every part of my house that receives sunshine has plants shoved into it. 👍😅👍 Planted some moonflower seeds on the seventeenth of this month(January 2023) and they are already up and growing in my southern facing window with a bit of shade.
You are so right , not everyone can use grow light. I certainly have no where to plug them in . I have made light boxes with tin foil and they work well. And I have a small propagator, if I used grow lights and got big plants to early I’d have nowhere to keep them. So thanks Steve I do get fed up with RUclips gardeners regaling viewers with their early well grown plants that are not achievable to most of us.
Somehow missed this video Steve. Best place for electric super 7 is B&Q, £39.99, £10 cheaper than Amazon. They also sell 3 of the trays with tops £7. Worth a look. 👍
It's very interesting to see your propogator journey, it's almost identical to my own over the years. Without doubt the little Super Seven is the best!
Great video. I really like your heated sand bed. On the topic of grow lights, the extra cost to run the lights would certainly increase your cost of living. I had the same concerns, but since I work at home, I had the lights where I work turned on most of the day. It has no windows. I did a quick calculation and determined two led lights (11W each) was nearly equivalent to a single grow light (24W). So I opted to bring in the propagators with the grow lights into my office. The grow lights illuminate the seedlings as well as my office with no change in my electric bill. Once the daytime temperature goes above 0c, I usually take the seedling trays outdoors to acclimatize and get natural sunlight.
Great as usual.I am starting to get the itch but normally don't start planting seeds till mid feb(onions) first to be started.I am looking at seed sites and catalogues will be ordering soon.Wish I could get Sarpo mara?? here but not allowed sucks haha.Well happy gardening and I watch you all the time just most times forget to hit like.
Here in the Chicagoland area I start most seeds April 1st outside in zipper greenhouses, and the temporary over the earth zipper greenhouses. I add domes over things that need more warmth and that really helps. If we get a dip in temp’s then I turn on old fashioned Christmas lights inside…which put off enough heat to help seedlings make it through. Only things I do inside are my alliums and celery…as they take so long to establish. I do have a small grow light setup for starting…..but I found that it’s a must as we have so many grey day’s during the lowest light of winter.
Thanks for that Steve. I remember you going through the details of "the beast" last year. I'd like one but I don't think I'll get round to it, too much to do. But I think I will get one of those Garland jobbies for the windowsill, very handy. I'll just have to be careful at the next stage moving the seedlings on. 👍🏼
Good video. I use the same multi tray demonstrated at the beginning, it works really well. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and squashes to name a few all germinated well. For grow lights I use an aquarium light, about £25 for one around a metre long and it works perfectly, after all they do keep aquarium plants growing. The light helps keep the young plants growing upwards.
Thanks very much for this info Steve - I like the look of the super 7 in 1, it would be just about perfect for the amount of seeds I need to start this year. It’s no competition for “The Beast”, but it’s a start! 😂
It's a great little thing. Got it as well. No issues whatsoever. If I had to nitpick, the only thing I could come up with is that a thermostat would be really nice to have.
Agreed. I think that gardening should be according to the seasons. I'm not dismissing technology, but I do think that we can rely on it too much, and lose the pure joy of what gardening is all about. Time spent away can be used for thinking about and planning for Spring.
Great advice Steve thank you. I’ve been and bought a super 7 from B n Q … All set up and my first seeds of the season in.. Onions, chillis, peppers and aubergines… I hope my window sills are big enough to cope 😅😂
Great video Steve, good info on the super seven which I was delighted to receive for Christmas, may invest in a small size cable just to grow the tomatoes on, thanks for the rundown on offering the length thumbs up looking forward to 2023 videos thank you Steve A very happy New Year
I've just purchased the 7 in 1 Propagator for my conservatory. Thanks for all the great info on your channel Steve. You've inspired me to get into gardening and with the ground work done from advice on your videos, I'm hoping my second year will be even more productive. Cheers and stay well!
Thank you Lester, you learn all the time in gardening, I am still learning now after 50 years, always something new. Good luck moving into your second season...Steve...🙂
Thanks for these videos, I have just order the window propagation and some extra trays , thanks Steve, keep going with these information videos they helping me loads. I have only been garden for two years and I sieve my compost last year ( as you said to do ) , what a difference thanks again
A very (helpful video Steve, thanks. I have just bought a Garland Super 7 and I’m well impressed with the quality of it. All the wee seed trays are robust and high quality. I have a big allotment in north east Scotland so I’ll get good use of it. I need to get better at succession planting so your advice is invaluable. Thanks again.
Happy new year Steve. Great little video and very informative. I have had the Super Seven for a few years and find it excellent as well. I also have a heat mat with thermostat which I have set up in a large unheated propagator with clear plastic lid which is about 100 x 45 cm in size. More than enough for me with my Super Seven to produce sufficient veg plants for three 12 x 4 ft raised beds at home plus greenhouse and all the bedding plants i need for my front and back garden. Need to be organised as you say and to set up a production line the best you can. All the best Steve.
Hi steve Thankyou for all the info. I save the plastic meat containers or mushroom containers from supermarkets which work really well just need to make holes. Also sometimes toms or cakes come in plastic containers with a click on lid these are great for mini propogators they already have holes but plastic is thinner so but flimsy. But I can’t afford to buy stuff so I just try wherever I can to recycle. I do look in recycling places or charity places for secondhand aswell. We have quite a big plot allotment plot. A full size one plot 1 then we added a strip next to us which is a half one plot 2 that’s was about 5 years ago then last year in the other side next to us we added another half strip plot 3. All no dig now and the ground after 4 years of no digging is beginning to be really really great. I pulled a parsnip out the other day it was over 3 ft long and I pulled it out with my hands it went in that far and pulled out I could hardly believe it.anyway I have gardened for years my dad taught me most in veg gardening my mum taught me about fruit and flowers. But there is always more to learn and try new ideas and I love to watch you because of that. Take care see you soon🙋🏻👍
Hi Steve Just got myself a G51 Garland propagator from Crocus £29.08 delivered (within 3 days over Christmas), not tried it yet but will be watching all your videos for all the tips, by the way still not had any of my onions seeds showing as yet. Keep up the good work. Happy New Year mate. Sam at allotment36
I'm planning on investing in one of those windowsill propagators this year. I can see it would be really useful...... Edited. I've ordered one and it should be with me tomorrow. Looking forward to sowing and growing again.
Another great informative video Steve..A lot of the youtube and instagram growers seem to get a lot of their "gear"gifted by the suppliers( polytunnels, raised bed kits, growlights etc). Good luck to "em...but like you say it paints a false picture...youtubers planting seedlings in the polytunnel beds when my seeds are still in the packet!!
I have been using my super 7 for three years now to start all of my plants and I don't feel the need for any other propagator. I do like the idea of the heat mat with a frame for potted on plants. One to plan for in the future. Thank you for the info.
I can see the 7 in 1 working well for you on the window sill from the onion video the other day. I have a closet little more the 4 feet wide 3 feet deep. I lined the walls with thin layer reflective mirror like sheeting pinned in place. I put in wire grid shelves 4 foot wide by 2 foot wide. 4 shelves total installed. I installed a 4 foot LED 5000K shop light one above each shelf. (I bought all 4 shop lights on amazon for $60 US). I rigged it to raise up and down ( Very high tech a paper clip and a piece of string lol) to stay above the top of the plant 3'-4' at all times. I put a 10' x 20" heating pad 2 per shelf so total of 8. I can easily fit up to 8 at a time 10" x 20" trays each on a heating mat under a light. All of this inside the space of a closet. This will be my first time with it all set up as it took some time to buy it all. I am excited to see what I can accomplish that I could not before. Thank you for this video I will look to see if the is a version of your 7 in 1 available in the US sometimes things are not always available in both countries. Take care be safe bye for now
Thank you for this informative video. I have a smaller version of the super 7 as my home garden was quite small but now I have an allotment as well I may have to invest in one 😀
Hi Steve. What tomatoes will you be growing this season? There's too much choice. Enjoying your channel and also Potty Mouth. Here's hoping this coming growing season is more settled than the last. All the best
As usual Steve another good easy to understand video, I do something the same and last year built myself a smaller version of the beast but its able to be dismantled as have only a small greehose. Would like to send you a couple of photos by some means to show that good ideas can be adapted to suit any situation. keep the videos coming mate
Great information! Thank you. I found your video when researching propagators and grow lights. I am reluctant to buy grow lights due to the expense but I''m not sure I have enough windowsill space to may have to get some.
Steve, just a quick one for you. Shops are selling seed potatoes. Is it too early to get the supplies in ? Don't want them going off in my garage whilst waiting for the planting time. Thanks again for all your videos and Sharing you gardening and chef knowledge, it is appreciated and keep up the good work
Hi Andy, I just bought a few nets of potato seed the other day myself, as long as you can keep them frost free, cool and dark they should be fine...Steve...🙂
Thanks for educational video. You didn’t mention about watering. Would you spray when the shoots come through. Or pour water in the tray? Guess it would depend on what you were growing. But maybe you have some general comments.
Hi Brian, in general I always want to water from below, watering from above can compress soil and it can also move seeds around within the soil, sometimes pushing them too deep. Watering from below also helps to stop to keep the young plants dry and discouraging some diseases from attacking them...Steve...🙂
One of the first items I brought was a super seven and I couldn’t do without it. I did get a small grow lamp as a present but with the current cost of electricity I will only be using it for my chilli plants. I’m looking forward to your hot-bed experiment as I did try germinating seeds on top of my compost but it didn’t really work as I think the temperature was too low.
You have made my day :-) Ive just bought a super 7 heated propogator from B&Q £40, If you get a B&Q card, you get £5 off your first purchase over £30, so it only cost me £35 :-)
Thanks Steve I got a 7 in 1 propagator also it was not a bad price at the time, which is in my bedroom. It was very useful. Do you ever grow shallots seeds as have some given not sure if you should start them now.
Hi Steve you mention about the big Propagator with sand to keep the sand moist. Is that a one of thing keeping it moist or have you to check every so often and how do you do this, as I imagine the plastic covering the sand stays in place along with the plants etc sitting on top of the plastic. Thanks take care. Emmet.
Hello Steve The 7 tray heated propagator you mention, I have one now. When the seeds germinate when do you take the lid off? I want to prevent them getting too leggy. Thanks in advance
Thanks for that Steve very useful. Do you put your seedlings directly on the sand in the beast, or do you put them on top of that plastic sheet with the damp sand underneath?
Hi Michael, it is not something I have used (just had to google what it was), its a compost tea. I make my own compost tea at home every year. I use a water butt or similar and fill with water then wrap a few big handfulls of compost in some sacking or netting and tie off with some string, a piece of wood or cane across the top so I can tie the package to it whilst it dangles in the water, then allow to steep/sit there for a few weeks. Everytime I walk past it in the garden a shake the string. I also have an aquarium airstone and pump that sits in the barrel to aerate the mix. I spray the mix onto my soil twice a year, this adds life to the soil...Steve...🙂
Great info as always marra Am sure av heard you mention a frost heater in the potty club or one of your vids, is that the "beast" or is it something else? ;
Hi Sonja, yes they are from a Boxing day sowing. Are your seeds fresh?, If they are fresh give them another few days then place them in a warmer room for a few days more, if still no germination after that you may want to get a different pack of seeds. Sometimes as gardeners we have to be patient and whilst one gardeners seeds can germinate in a week we may have to wait for three, thats gardening...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp Hi Steve, yes the seeds are fresh. I'll give them a few days more. If still nothing happens I'll do what you suggested. Thank you very much.
Hi Steve just watched the video I set melon and peppers aubergine away on 26th, melon and aubergine thru but peppers a bit shy as they need alot of light as ya no, just seen ya video and notices ya water bottle with a sprinkler on I normally stick a finger over and squeeze but the sprinkler would be good, where did ya get there from?
Yeah cheers I had a look round ebay last night and found some 6 for £7.99. I just think if the water bottle is in the propagator warmin up its daft putting it into a watering can or putting my finger over the neck of the bottle. Thanks for the help Tanya and Steve
Hi Steve can u help me out please I have the super heated 7 I lost all my peppers and tomatoes and found out that the compost was bone dry need help so doesn’t happen again would I be better off taking them off heat every couple of day and let them soak up water
This is not a propagator question as such, but is linked to this topic and the hot bed video from before Christmas. I only have greenhouses on my allotment (with no access to power) and dont have much space in my flat for bringing seedlings on. So I was wondering about using bins full of manure (or just piles) in the green houses to raise the temperature a little bit and thus advance me being able to start stuff off a bit into the late winter. Has anyone ever tried this?
Its part of the reason that I want the hot beds in the first place, pile the manure up then a rack or shelf on top to start seeds on, you will need a good volume of fresh manure though...Steve...🙂
i use heat mats....last year i made a purpose made base with polystyrene as the floor.....disaster the heat it made was stupid it killed the plants....i now use a simple polycarbonate sheet as a base...almost like a double glazed unit....its an even temp....ive also made a cheap greenhouse heater that seems to be cheap to run....1xbattern lamp holder set in a terracotta pot...with a 60w incandesent lamp in...1 upturned terracotta pot placed on top....set on a simple timer to come on at 6pm to go off at 6 am....works well and doesnt even move the bars on that awful smart meter device
Personally, I don't see the point of electric propergators because I can get the same results with the heat in my living room and since I'm in Scotland, I don't have humidity issues. I did seedlings at the window sill when I started and then got grow lights after a few years (basically just the cheapest shop garage lights on amazon) and rather spend the electricity on light than heat because of how reliably my seedlings grow in my overcast wheather. My family members have always done the old school methos of hot water bottle in a plastic tub or long lasting candle in their greenhouses with their early seed sowing. I got my mother in law propergators and basically the most use the lids get is to protect the planted seedling from the squirlies.
so sad knowing we wont see anymore videos 😢RIP Steve thanks for sharing all your knowlege with us.

You will be glad you did, they are brilliant little things and I would miss mine if I did not have it...Steve...🙂
Great vid Steve 👍🌱👍
A top class video maestro 👍
You are too kind, thank you...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp no credit where credit is due😊
I've got the 7 in it's a great bit of kit, I think i did a review of it
I would be lost without mine Lee, I really would as its my main kit for the first couple of months of the year...Steve...🙂
Great information! Thank you. I found your video when researching propagators and grow lights. I am reluctant to buy grow lights due to the expense but I''m not sure I have enough windowsill space to may have to get some.
Where did you get the heat matt steve and how much thanks again for the informative video's and happy new year to you and the family
Hi Andrew, the details for the heat mate are in the videos description, you might have to click/tap the "Show more" button...Steve...🙂
@Green Side Up I apologise Steve I'd seen it after I had commented. Again keep up the good work
Steve, just a quick one for you.
@@GreenSideUp Thanks Steve, better get shopping 😊
I sow my shallots in March, no need to get those going early in my opinion...Steve...🙂
@@GreenSideUp Thanks
Hi Steve you mention about the big Propagator with sand to keep the sand moist. Is that a one of thing keeping it moist or have you to check every so often and how do you do this, as I imagine the plastic covering the sand stays in place along with the plants etc sitting on top of the plastic. Thanks take care. Emmet.
Great video
Hello Steve
The 7 tray heated propagator you mention, I have one now. When the seeds germinate when do you take the lid off? I want to prevent them getting too leggy. Thanks in advance
Very interesting i can't afford a heated propagator so i have a normal one placed near a radiatorx
Nice domes ! 👍
As someone who grows super hot peppers, grow lights are a must. Sunlight is just not strong enough at this time of year 😔
Thanks for that Steve very useful. Do you put your seedlings directly on the sand in the beast, or do you put them on top of that plastic sheet with the damp sand underneath?
On top of the plastic sheet, which helps with keeping the sand moist for longer...Steve...🙂
Great video Steve, can I ask, do you use your super 7 propagator in your greenhouse or indoors during winter months?
Love
hi steve what are you thoughts on using biolift plant health , or would just mix worm casts into your soil do the same
Hi Michael, it is not something I have used (just had to google what it was), its a compost tea.
Great info as always marra
Am sure av heard you mention a frost heater in the potty club or one of your vids, is that the "beast" or is it something else? ;
Hi Steve, Do you ever use the plug in propogaters in the greenhouse or must they be used inside in winter?
Hi Steve, the onions are they the ones you put in the compost on boxing day? I did the same but no seed has germinated.
Hi steve do you still have to water in the propagation please mick
Would love something like the super 7 but my house doesn’t have many windowsills and my kitchen is too dark.
I don't know about Steve but I got a pack of them from King's Seeds and they aren't that expensive. Hope that helps you 😊
Hi Darran, I got mine from ebay, they are available on amazon too...Steve...🙂
Yeah cheers I had a look round ebay last night and found some 6 for £7.99. I just think if the water bottle is in the propagator warmin up its daft putting it into a watering can or putting my finger over the neck of the bottle. Thanks for the help Tanya and Steve
Hi Steve can u help me out please I have the super heated 7 I lost all my peppers and tomatoes and found out that the compost was bone dry need help so doesn’t happen again would I be better off taking them off heat every couple of day and let them soak up water
😁👍
Thank you...Steve...🙂
This is not a propagator question as such, but is linked to this topic and the hot bed video from before Christmas. I only have greenhouses on my allotment (with no access to power) and dont have much space in my flat for bringing seedlings on. So I was wondering about using bins full of manure (or just piles) in the green houses to raise the temperature a little bit and thus advance me being able to start stuff off a bit into the late winter. Has anyone ever tried this?
Charles Dowding does that.
Its part of the reason that I want the hot beds in the first place, pile the manure up then a rack or shelf on top to start seeds on, you will need a good volume of fresh manure though...Steve...🙂
I wish we could get the 1/4 pots here in canada
I've got the super seven Steve but it hardly feels even warm .Is that usual ?
My main problems are no greenhouse or suitable windowcills to use for propagation
How do I find the link to the spare 1/4 size box tray 7.
Sadly missed. RIP
i use heat mats....last year i made a purpose made base with polystyrene as the floor.....disaster the heat it made was stupid it killed the plants....i now use a simple polycarbonate sheet as a base...almost like a double glazed unit....its an even temp....ive also made a cheap greenhouse heater that seems to be cheap to run....1xbattern lamp holder set in a terracotta pot...with a 60w incandesent lamp in...1 upturned terracotta pot placed on top....set on a simple timer to come on at 6pm to go off at 6 am....works well and doesnt even move the bars on that awful smart meter device
Did you have a thermostat set up with it Dean?...Steve...🙂
Garland G51 Super 7 heated prop £33.03 from Keen Gardener Ltd 😁🌱☀️
Thanks Fletchy!...Steve...🙂
Thanku just what i needed, i will cheat & be useing lights though. I get why ur not though 🙂
Grow lights are so expensive to run and TBH I don't think they're necessary. You can grow something good on a window ledge, there's really no need.
They’re not that expensive, as for window ledge there’s no comparison if compared to grow lights
Some plants can go a little leggy on the window sill, but I am used to that and used to working around it too...Steve...🙂
Just got needy and got some carrot nantes 2 in the heated propagator oh and 🌰
