Our Northern trip continues as we pass through Kirkby Stephen

Did not expect to find such a lovely small town on our route, this little market town has a Monday livestock market and has done since 1605, it remains an important event in the town and surrounding countryside. Kirkby Stephen west station on Settle-Carlisle line keeps to the high ground avoiding any descent into the valleys where possible.

Ness is absolutely correct, the K in Kirkby Stephen is silent..... It's an error many strangers make! Kirkby Stephen has no mining history I'm aware of - I live about 20 miles away. It is a well established market town though, with quite a large auction mart.
