- As Serato DJ Pro and Lite have reached their version 3.0 milestone, it was only natural that the company would bring a major new feature to the software. Live stem separation - the ability to control drums, bass, melody and vocals individually - is not new in the DJ world, and so it was important that Serato brought some new ways of working to the tech. In this episode of Beatsource Tech, Mojaxx breaks down the new feature in full.

Every couple of years something comes along that completely changes how I DJ, this is one of those moments! Also Mo, the weight loss is looking good! Keep it up! We need you healthy for years to come!
Great video bro. Love the new version of Serato. Just imagine they would built STEMS options into FLIP. you could save intro/outro version, clean (mute acapella on curse words) , acapella intro/outro all saved into one source file. Beatsource could offer all the versions saved to the file you download from the server.
Brilliant idea! I use Flip a lot too :)
That's a great idea!
Great idea!
Love that idea
AWESOME idea, I suspect Serato will add this around 2030. I use Serato, a lot, and love it. But they're sloooooooooow to add new features.
Serato seems to take the Apple approach…often not the first to offer a feature, but it’s really good when they eventually do. Excited to really get into this!
So much layering fun. 4 decks with stems. You can just build a crazy remix/mashup on the fly. ❤
Try that with 6 decks on Virtual DJ and it blows Serato DJ out of the water. I've done a 6 deck VirtualDJ mashup back in 2015, and while it was hard, it was worth a practice and a recording.
My new favourite thing about your videos (which are always on point), is the marketing related BS associated with driving clicks. I love your lacklustre half commitment to ham acting your 'surprise' or 'anger' on the thumbnail. It's probably an English thing but its brilliant. More ham please vicar!!!
Love the breakdown and even more impressed with the Performance breakdown which is very important to address even in Beta. Thanks again for an informative video Mojaxx 🙌🏼
Serato have released the best version of Stems / Audio Separation on the market as far as sound quality and ease of use. Its transformative technology. Comparing this tool to the function of an EQ is an odd take. Stems are not a rival or alternative to EQ at all, it's an entirely unique tool for us all to use. Im excited for it
Except on other platforms where they literally give you the option to replace your EQs with it. Serato is the only one which strictly has on/off controls.
I agree Algoriddim made an error having their controls for stems mapped to the EQ knobs.
Serato have made a better design choice with their implementation on the pads.
@@Mojaxx exactly, for what I do
(I’m more like you with my workflow) there’s no way I’m subbing my eq’s in place of stems. For me it dosent make sense now if they allowed us to keep eq’s the same and added this as a stand alone option that’s strictly an add(like someone already mentioned get rid of slicer and add this feature and I’m 100% invested)
Not me dragging my cursor over your Italo Disco crate trying to see what tracks you have! Don't know a lot of djs who spin Italo Disco and its such a fun genre of music. So many great artist like Valerie Dore, Babys Gang, Scotch, Den Harrow, Fake and the list goes on and on and on. Love your videos!
Great video, Mojaxx! It has been a lot of fun to play with.
Thanks Mojaxx, You nailed it as always, cya sometimes on twitch again :)
Bang on review, Mo! This was exactly my experience with the stems update. I look forward to playing around with this beta.
M1 Phun…I loved Stems in Traktor and used it regularly…
Thanks Mojaxx - not just this but your great work over the pandemic
always look forward to your take on tech. wasn't a big fan of stems either but with the options I'm excited to try dem .
no more payment for intro outro edits on bpm supreme - yes this is the future! GREAT JOB and save money!
Yeah, that second row is the stuff ehehe looking forward to install it and check it out!
For me Stems is game changing. I have messed around in vdj off and on for the past 18 months or so and I find it really releases a ton of creativity. But as I'm only dabbling nowadays I couldn't justify the outlay for vdj when the serato / Roland 505 combo serves me so well in just about every other way.
Using stems creatively gives me a buzz I've not felt since I first started dj'ing in the late 1990s.
So I maybe alone here. But I was really excited to hear that Serato has joined the real time stems party, I mean genuinely, really excited.
The only other thing I'd like to see is: shift then hit a stems pad, to instantly solo that one stem.
Thank you 🙏 thank you 🙏 THANK YOU 🙏 SERATO!!!! For listening to us your client DJs !!! Finally giving us the STEMS SEPARATION FEATURE!!! Thaaaaannnkkk youuu!! It’s going to be SUPER DOPE MIXING ALL GENRES NOW WITH AN INFINITE UNIVERSE OF CREATIVITY!!!! 🔥🔥🫶🫶🔥🔥🙌🙌🙌👍👍👍 🫡🫡🫡 ... sh*t, I think I just came off of the excitement and mind blowing creativity!!! 💦💦💦💦 🤣😅
By the way, I now feel that paying for Serato’s full license was worthy!! Even though you don’t really need the full license to get this feature just by owning a Serato enabled equipment would do it… but I’m just saying for peace of mind 😆
This is absolutely amazing!!! Do you guys remember when we used to buy vinyl for $6 a song? It came with acapella and instrumental?? we had to buy two of the same records for 12 bucks?
This is a game changer. And for those of us who are prone to 4 channel mixers, this makes controllers like the Rev 7 a bit more appealing. 👀
In fact, this makes a lot of amazing 4 channel mixers like the A&H Xone:96 more attractive, so c'mon Serato, add support!
Excellent analysis Mo🙌
sick feature for brainstorming tracks, ripping pieces to make them, testing stuff together, but get ready for good dj's to work more and bad ones to work WAY LESS. If you overdo this or don't do it right you are gonna piss your dancefloor off.
Excellent addition, about time.!
Thank you Mojaxx! Outstanding video! Appreciate you!
Very interesting release. Could be something to use. Not too bad. Thanks for the overview Mojaxx. 💯💯💯
Im on board exited to try it out. Just being able to cut off vocals to mix the next track whenever we want is amazing, no need to have tons of edits anymore.
A bit lost on comparing this with EQ, such different things totally not mutually exclusive.
Very thorough Mojaxx. Thank you!
Nice to see my remix getting tested!! 😂 Great review as always mojaxx definitely agree its not quite there yet though!!
VERY GOOD BREAKDOWN AND CRITIQUE OF THE SERATO 3.0.
Another solid breakdown. Thank you
Nice one, waiting for the final version
I really like your analysis. I personally like making my own music, but am just getting into djing. I love the idea of stems as I can rock my synths and introduce parts of popular songs during performance.
Awesome throw down...Much Respect!
best review bro! answered everything !!
I agree the second row takes stems to the next level. I've been using Algoriddim Djay so I'm interested in seeing the comparison video. Great job as usual Mojaxx. Thanks...
Djay also has Stem FX. Just so you know. ;)
Thanks@@MisterTuur. I did not know that but I'll take a closer look.
Mojaxx you always make great vids bro
This is like a dream come true
Top video. I was the same as you re my ambivalence towards stems but I’ve just been playing around with ver. 3 on my Rane One and the simple echo out and ease of use activating the stems will be enough for me to add to my mixes.
I tried stems with my HP i3 laptop and right away knew I was underpowered. Got an AMD Ryzen 7 laptop, played around with stems and now I’m impressed. I think it’s gonna become my go to effects preference 🤟🏾 Thanks for the intuitive video MJ👍🏾
Gran video, muchas gracias! Un saludo!
Awesome video, my friend.
Cheers Mr Mojaxx.
This is a great addition to the core platform, but let's not all get beside ourselves! This is in place to enhance DJ'ing, not alter it.
And it bears mentioning that our friend Mojaxx has become our friend Lessjaxx!
SkyNet 🤣👍🏽🎧🎧 Great review will watch my memory and performance.
I cant wait for the official release.
Have such a need for this feature. So many time ill be working on a mix with 2 tracks, that sound amazing together, but then end up having some vocals crash together somewhere within the mix and having to scratch the whole idea. Being able to cut out a vocal or melody anywhere in the mix needed, is going to be so good.
Algoriddim Djay Pro AI is also able to apply FX to individual STEMS and has WAY more options and control over this. Serato’s simplified STEMS FX pads is a nice simplified approach though.
Yup.
DJay pro version sounds like crap though.
Been using Stems with Algoriddim for a while now and luv it,,
If Serato were to release an IOS version of their software l would jump ship in a heartbeat,,but l a, too reliant on my iPad so Algoriddim it is..
Absolutely sickkk
Wow love the new version of serato but also new version of toned down Mojaxx
Great break down sir
I have been using Algorithms stems off my lady’s DJay pro set up
But in a weird way as I still love traktor and have been using it for 12 years now.
I have recorded some different stem parts through algorithms Djsy
And using them in remix decks and as straight drum tracks and accapslas
It’s been lots of fun
Great video. Didn't feel like it was being buttered up
Interesting… and As Always Moojax the best at explain
Thanks for this review it was very helpful…
HELL YEAH… free!!!!!
It's not magic Serato made a way better sounding stuff than the others.
Serato is the ONLY company out there who was able to build a PRO version for their Pitch 'n' Time software.... and its a leader in the industry (same as SDJ) and the DAW plugin costs $600....
I was sure they won't import the same tech as others. They could licence it for a while, but who knows the licence agreement's legal notices.
Hundreds of DJs in their forum were begging for this since VDJ came up with stems.... And I was one of them, but now I know (hear) the reason they waited for so long.
Its a wonderful idea, not as accurate as NI's OG stems format, but that never came into life for the obvious reason.
And EQ-ing in the old way while stems with the buttons and the second row functions.... we can feel blessed to live in these ages as DJ's (not the other means BTW) and have way more tools than guys in the 70's, 80's .... but we lack of time to enjoy these tech.
I was blown away of SDJ's PnT at the first time I heard, and the same goes for their stems, and the combination of them...... no words.
All I would like to see is a fully mappable, multi display capable UI (like VDJ) and customazible midi EVERYTHING for those who payed for their SW....
And an updated Serato Remote and a real Vinyl like browsing experience.... just like JamsOnToast app on iOS were.
But I'm happy for this feature..... hope the other wishes of mine will come soon as well.
Thank you Mojaxx
Good, honest review. Thanks.
Absolute game changer!
For bedroom djs.
🎧 glad to finally have it in Serato and it is the best sounding and consistent but it’s power hungry as expected and cleaner than expected.
very informative , thank you DJcity
🤜🤙🖖🎤📷🎧
Stems separation basic code is written by Deezer, it called Spleeter. The first software that was used "by" was Max For Live where it was coded in a M4L-device and u can get the stems inside Ableton Live. There are now websites that do that Stems separation online.
Ah OK, so it's Spleeter. I thought it was Izotope's Music Rebalance.
Ooof. I just went laptopless and I’m going to stay that way but am I jealous?? Yes.
Using vocal stems for a mix-out during the verse is a great way to get to the next song quickly (without waiting until the chorus)
First of all, it's dope AF! It's also not my favorite that it uses loop rolls and sampler banks.
I propose getting rid of the slicer bank for stems
This eliminates the need to "shift + sampler or loop"
Instead, why not overwrite the slicer with one tap.
I love the echo-out features. Oh my gosh, that's awesome
This feature is superior to VDJ stems in many ways.
Additionally, if it can be applied to EQs as well, we can take bass dropping to a whole new level
Uhh gladly I just upgraded my ThinkPad's SSD to a 8 TB one 😎
serato are learning from their virtual dj overlords xD
IT would be nice to use xp2 as additional controller using first 8 pads as hot cues on top and next 8 pads as the stems below or vice versa.
Pretty sure Skynet does do it!!! Great video!!!
Finally!!!🎉
Great breakdown as always Mojaxx. Will be interesting to see how/if I incorporate this into my workflow. Would be GREAT if we could just get rid of slicer and replace with sampler on the 70/72. Hoping they add a stems update to serato sample plug-in. That is still my go-to sampler for quick chopping and pitching samples in logic. If the drums aspect is as powerful as you say, might make for some new breaks that I've never been able to fully isolate on EQ/processing alone.
The STEMS solution of Serato resides between what Traktor does with "Static" (pre-created) STEMS and Virtual DJ "Dynamic" STEMS feature.
They did a great integration with the pre maped FX on pad, but calling that a "game changer" is a bit insulting for what Djay & VDJ done 2 years ago now, it's like every innovative thing that VDJ made is completly ignored by DJ until it appear on Serato or Rekortbox (like before with the sync, video integration, key sync and lot of other stuff that VDJ introduce first)
For the CPU usage, VDJ use the graphic card power for the stems, which is also a real game changer, as most computer have a pretty decent graphic card now (I can use VDJ stem + FX on a 2016 i5 computer without any audio glitch)
Hope this will put some pressure on Pioneer & Native Instruments (who have access to the technology since they merge with iZotope) to move in that direction, specially NI who got all the software/hardware ready for perfect integration
Next real "game changer" step would be to have this on a standalone unit (looking at you Denon)
On top of that, Djay also has the Stem FX. Not sure about VDJ though.
It’s definitely a good feature, and highly welcomed. Emphasis on the pressure on the cpu and also on the physical storage. My real dream will be for serato to develop a library as smart as the recordbox library. That will be very nice.
seems like a cool idea to experiment with tracks
A massive mix tool . Just not happy with requirements especially Using Lower budget machine. But algorithm stems works flawlessly on my iPad Air 4
Mac users: use Activity Monitor and check CPU usage while Serato is stemming out parts during track load to see if your machine can handle it. New M1's can handle it no problem.
It seems they are trying to be exactly like VDJ. One thing I can’t believe they aren’t charging for it, but when they do an update they will probably charge then.
Se ve Muy bueno por parte de serato aunque se tardo la compania
Just played around with it, I moved to VDJ because they had stems and I do enjoy using them but now this was a game changer, from my experience the stems in serato is so much cleaner
Sounds very nice, to me better then other softwares, but the stems files do seem very large.
Genius. Nice tools🙂
Serato need to add pad fx now and integrate it just like Rekordbox sort of.🙂
I'm intrigued... hope they work out the SP1 functionality.. that would be dope and super useful to put that piece of kit back into service.
You can midi map it. Also want to mention that the parameter on the mixers can be used to switch between acapella & instrumental. maybe I missed it but didn’t see Mojaxx talking about it, just the pads
@@eskei83 wait are you the same eski from like the beginning of Serato on the forums?? 😃😲😲🤯
@@MistaCham haha 😆 yes
@@eskei83 🙆🏾♂️🤙🏾🤙🏾#SeratoRoyalty #Salute
I love this feature but I would love a Crate shearch feature is it better😂😂
VirtualDJ can also add FX to stems. In VDJ you have a choice of using CPU or GPU for stems analysis, and GPU is almost instant if you have the right hardware (NVIDIA on PC).
you dont see that video?
Nice video! Thanks for indepth review. I'm curious as to how much space it takes if you drag the files into the stems folder.
This already exists in Virtual Dj for years
Thinking Stems replace EQ. I agree with MO but i don’t think folks should think of them as create tools for live remix and not EQ replacement. Could be wrong.
Okay Traktor this just make go with Serato!
Tried it last night on prime 4 works great however some tracks sound low quality once you start cuting things out and some have a delay of about a second or 2 before the change but overall it's great also it works better with laptops that have dedicated gpus rather than integrated ones
Great video as always, Mojaxx! I see that Serato has listed a whole heap of compatible hardware on their website. For DJ consoles that aren't on that list, do you know whether it's possible to map the feature to their pads?
You can indeed midi map them to anything.
In my 3.0.0 with XDJ-XZ I only have two stem buttons - a microphone (for vocals) and a mixer (for mix minus vocals). How are you getting pad mode as shown in the video?
I have pad mode now with the controller connected but still can't view the pads in Serato
i thought the same about the results as well - wondering will file type create better or worse sound? seemed like the record pool remixes generally didnt stem well, but other files that were bought seemed usuable.
Hey Mojaxx thx for the review. Did you load videos? 720/1080p. Do the stem file doubles in size as well? I will give it a try asap :)
my guess is no, because there's no technical reason. serato generates the stem PCM streams and stores them using lossless compression next to the original file, the video data isn't relevant and therefore the stems should be about as big as if you generate them with the audio version of the song.
@@FunctionGermany you are correct, I tried :) that's great news for us Video-DJs
wait a minute are you losing wait or is it just the beard.About time Serato did this.A video on the pad modes for this sometime would be great
I am losing weight ;). I'll probably revisit this when it goes to full release and look at it with more hardware then.
@@Mojaxx Good work Mojaxx, from an outside pair of eyes - what ever you are doing is working wonders! keep it up bro. I'm on the same journey - I feels ya
I’m waiting for rekordbox update😊
Traktor stems were a big hassle to source. This is so much cooler, because you can just grab any track and get creative on the spot, without previous preparation. Not a Serato user myself but damn this is awesome!
Very Excite! (Borat voice)
they should have added a volume knob for each stem button or equalizer setting ...
Great upgrade for serato can the stems be used on the sampler such as vocals ?
