The original catamaran hulls from 2002 or so had unitary bottoms with both studded and pin hole attachments on top. Don't know about original model, but the hulls themselves float well when sealed with tape. Limited carrying capacity makes motorization a challenge, and that may well be the case with these new cat hulls. Several examples with 1, 2, and 3 old cat hulls on my channel.
I just got this set!! I am super-excited as we are going to a local-ish boating pond tomorrow to test it, and possibly film it in action. Luckily the UK doesn't get such cold winters, so the pond should be mostly liquid...

I made this today with my son, it was a Christmas gift for him. I like it a lot. It does float, but the hulls do take on water. I'm tempted to glue them together. The sail works best when it is allowed to bow, the lug goes through the large hole and then locates to the smaller hole. Once wet, some of the parts want to slide off, another temptation to glue the whole thing together ! It would be nice to see an option to rc the sail and rudder controls.
If you were to motorized, i would use something that has an executable code. You would need to connect a motor to the jib and one to the mainsail. The code would move the motors and the some time with one push. It would also state how far the jib motor and mainsail motor have to go. You would also need a motor for the rudder. JUST IN CASE, have a motor on the propeller.
took you 40 mins? it took me 3 hours (half a hour yesterday and 2 hours and half today, thats also why im seeing this video i just finished my own today)
Just made a fun, fast, nimble, seaworthy bare-bones twin-screw power catamaran from these hulls using 2 L motors, PF LiPo battery, SBrick receiver, and 55 mm third-party props. Since it steers beautifully with differential power to propulsion motors, no need for separate steering system. Hence weighs a mere 520 g with decent freeboard. Hulls take on water slowly. Will definitely seal them with tape for extended pool play. Would love to see your solution.
Can't wait to use these hulls in a motorized catamaran! (Lots of original motorized LEGO boats on my channel.) Concerned though about the hulls taking on water through their bows. Did you observe that? If so, will have to seal hull joins with tape.
@@pmj_studio4065 On 2nd thought, you'd have to seal these low-displacement hulls no matter what. Freeboard after installing motors, batteries, and receiver will be very limited, and waves happen -- especially in a swimming pool. Electrical tape works great and comes off cleanly.
@@pmj_studio4065 Never came close to getting any LEGO unitary hull up on plane with LEGO motors and batteries -- even with highly efficient third-party props. Tried all but these new cat hulls, and their displacement hullforms give me no hope for a different result.
@@JeremyMcCrearyTechnicalLEGO yeah, I didn't think about propellers. What about a catamaran with two hulls from fishing boat (set 4642) and motors (part 48064) from speedboat?
Good review!!! I wonder how hard would it be to use the Lego Powered Up 2 Port hub and use the motors to control the sails .. Would the sails be efficient to move the craft ? .. I would mount the model on a trailer with your favorite MOC towing the trailer. 😁
The sails can move only ~30° each side. On a real boat it would be enough, but this has too flat&small sails and could only sail sideways (or tip over). Sailing in the wind direction wouldn't work either because sails would be almost perpendicular to the wind.
This does not sail well at all. I wish they had done a better job at making it functional. But I guess it's a start. Several years back I made a LEGO RC sailboat that sails a lot better.
:-D Don't confuse the roles of the players! TLG makes a "saleable" boat, then after it's release we, AFOLs meant to make it sailable. :-D It's like the usual gearbox fixing on a car set. :-) Half the fun, isn't it?

Make a motorized version without propeller only with the wind
