      Base coat of white paint on the digits prior to the yellow paint would have made it pop even more, too... But whatever. The darned thing works like it was designed to, and the technical ingenuity of some people never fails to impress me.

    It works great for small crowds. For bigger crowds, you need make minor adjustments so some of the segments flip much further. This makes it more legible at different viewing angles

    Brilliant - where was this idea when I was a kid in the 70's - before I got into electronics - I would have built two these and used them to score table tennis. Love it!.

      It is possible, he couldn't make anything nearly as powerful as modern computers but early computers were made for calculations and various mathematical problems..
      He could also make a small storage that could store text ( something that can be done in minecraft )

      A digital clock probably wouldn't be too difficult to makе, all it would take is combining several of these, and linking them with different-sized gears or something

      See 3:32 it's the state table which is used in electronic. 3:34 onwards is the technique to convert that table to mechanical output

    What if you made a frame that is as deep as the number-segments' width and place it around the display area. This will hide the yellow part of a number shop that people from all sides can read it.
    I added an entire recession on my model that has black light reactive yellow paint.

      depending on how hard the turning mechanism is, it wouldnt be super hard to use an arduino with a few stepper motors....

      it is possible by using a winding mechanism, but it would give a few problems.
      The main issue would be that cardboard wouldn't be strong enough to support the loaded spring, so you'd need to make it out of wood (to keep the theme) or resin.
      Metal would be out of the question if you want to keep the rest cardboard, since it would weigh too much and thus slowly break the mechanism down by disforming the cardboard.
      A second problem would be the winding mechanism itself, which (unless you craft and tune its radars and springs entirely by hand with the right tools and knowledge) would give a few seconds to few minutes delay in every hour.
      Still, if time accuracy isn't a problem, then it is definitely possible. It would be quite a bulky project however.

      I think it does, it gives the mechanisms and the method. It’s not a kit and who knows a cut list with instructions might be on a website.
